2009 MLB Discussion Thread

lowell has played well all season. He is one of the only guys consistently playing well offensively. I can't understand for the life of me, why he is the guy getting screwed out of ab's. Big pappi and varitek have been fuckING horrible this season. It is the middle of august, they aren't going to suddenly turn it on.

Nice to see the Dodgers win the first two against the G'aints in SF. Especially after the horrible strech where we have been losing a lot more than winning. Now if we can beat that stringy haired pitcher, it would be a good start to the week.
Yeah, what he did was stupid, but that injected life into the team and Lowell. Good God, where has that Lowell been all season. But the difference in the length of his suspension, is going to be determined by how the governing body calls his helmet toss. If its a flip/toss it will be lighter. A throw and he's out a week or more.
Haha, a "flip"? How do you flip your helmet at somebody? I'm sorry, man. But that HAS to be considered a throw. And in my opinion, it shouldn't matter either way. If you don't like the penalty that comes with charging the mound and hitting someone with your helmet, then don't do it.

I agree 100% that it seemed to jumpstart the team, but Youk could have been a bigger man about it. I know Porcello was backing away, but even the way Youkilis ran at him was weird. He just kinda ran his face into Porcello's shoulder, lol. Did he have any clue what he was going to do as he ran out to the mound? If you're going to shove him, shove him. If you're going to tackle him, tackle him. Youkilis was just inbetween everything, haha. Can't wait to see what happens the next time Joba hits him. :)

Here's a good clip in case anybody missed it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WaZUWqzzBV8

One more thing, as a Yankee fan, I'm starting to wonder, what is up with the way the Red Sox fight? You've got Youkilis throwing helmets, Varitek keeping his mask on, and Pedro Martinez throwing a 70 year old man to the ground. I'm waiting on Dustin Pedroia to punch someone in the groin. This is a far cry from Nolan Ryan vs Robin Ventura, haha.

Well that angle shows it a lot better. I'd only seen the over the shoulder view. That makes it clear as day.

But what Porcello did on his way off the field was truly classless. I understand spitting out of habit, but that was meant to be disrespectful. I hope the Sox face the Tigers in the playoffs and its at Fenway when he pitches. And he gets rocked due to crowd noise.

Wonder who gets hit today? Miggy shouldn't. Bet its Martinez.

There was no reason at all to throw at Youkilis there. Cabrera got hit in the finger on a ball that was between the plate and the batters box, it hit him because he hovers over the plate and he didn't pull his hands back. It was also an 0-2 count with 2 men on. Clearly not intentional.

Victor Martinez got buzzed inside with a fastball afterwards, that should've been the end of it right there. I guess Porcello wasn't satisfied.

I just saw the clips of what happened with Sandoval today, that was silly. The ball was up but over the plate and the guy flips out like they're headhunting or something. The batters are allowed to hover over the plate way too much and the league doesn't let pitchers throw inside to back the hitter off anymore.

I just came back from the game. Very heated.

RE: Sandoval situation....

I just saw the replays and got some texts from my buddies.....Sandoval got hit. But, that's not the main argument.....

The reason Sandoval flipped is because he considered it retaliation because Martin acted like a bitch being flipped at home by Velez....

I'd summarize the whole 5/6 innings but I can't get over the game/umpiring....

One thing though.....Ethier is a man. Dude's the clutchest hitter in baseball.

On that note, Lincecum is a man. Damn that kid is nasty, even if he looks like the kid from Dazed and Confused, he is filthy. We did get some favorable calls, but didn't take advantage of it.

I realize this is meant mostly in jest, but I love Pedro, dammit. Don Zimmer CHARGED him. What other option did he have? Pedro just threw him to the ground harmlessly.

They declined to put baseball back in the Olympics today because its "not global enough". More like not European enough... They might bring in 7 on 7 Rugby instead.

The only thing Don Zimmer could charge was a meal to his hotel room. Even if he was "running at Pedro" what do you really think he was going to do? I doubt he was running out there to drop kick anybody. I get your point, but I still don't think it was really necessary, lol. ;)

Hah, yeah, I guess I have no idea what Zimmer's plan was. But it didn't look like he was just charging out there to talk to Pedro and I can't imagine how much shit Pedro would've taken if he had run away from Don Zimmer. If I ever had a teammate who had run away from a 70-year old man, I would never let him hear the end of it.

If a 70 year-old fat, bald man came charging at me, I think I'd run away out of sheer terror, thinking he must have lost his damn mind, haha. Senile people are dangerous.

It was pretty lame anyway IMO with the olympics being in summer and thus the world's best players can't play because of the MLB season.

Better to just have the World Baseball Classic IMO.

I said the Mets should sit everyone for the rest of the year since all of these injuries occurring and Wright gets hit in the head today. Some injury will happen to Santana next.

Been a little too busy to post, nice to see Haren back in form.

And what a game last night against the Dodgers, Reynolds and Montero have been so clutch... back-to-back homers to tie in the 9th and then Parra driving the run in the 10th for the win.

I hope Kuroda is alright...

The one player i didnt want to see go down....GOES DOWN!. Our lineup is barren as is...and now its a ghost town. We now are officially as bad as the Washington Nationals.

Heck we traded with the natties AGAIN to get Anderson Hernandez back. This season is done. Ill watch baseball to watch baseball but watching the mets is gut wrenching.

Hopefully Wright stays off the field and is rejuvinated when he comes to camp in a Boston uniform next season.... I kid, I kid

Be honest, with Minaya at the helm, anything is possible.... And you're terrified

haha, Ill hunt and strangle the Mets F.O if that happens...or ill give up watching the mets for a long time.

Oh heck ya im terrified. The funny thing, i bet Omar explored trading Wright and Reyes for a sack of baseballs and 25 maplewood bats.

This season has been a utter disaster for Met Fans. If Omar and jerry dont get dumped...ill be utterly shocked and will concede next year.
Wow. The Angels are the first team since like the 1930's or something to have every batter hitting above .300 this late into the year.
they are on FIRE. BUT DAMMIT i wish Vlad the impaler was healthy all year. i was counting on him to help carry my team but now he starts hitting and im wayy out of contention lol :(

bump

What a pounding the Yanks gave to the Sox at Fenway. popping 20 runs at fenway i never thought was possible. looks like Penny may have to fix his shit or the Sox need to replace him. It looks like they got Wags off waivers which is a great deal for them. they have innings 7-9 pretty much locked up in relief with Wags,Bard, and Paps.

on that note, Happy to see Cole Hamels get beat by the Buffalo Bisons today. at least i can be happy for one night and good luck to Pedro. I hope the fans dont boo him. Its not like it was his wish to leave NY. minaya just didnt want him back.....and boy does Minaya look like even more of a tool know. Pedro>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Livan or anyone in the back end.

Mets suck :)

How are the Roid Sox doing? Looks like they are becoming cursed again due to the taint and tarnish of all the cheaters on the 2004 and 2007 World Series asterisk teams. It's also funny to see Jim Rice knock on Jeter for not being a real baseball player.

Tazawa's got a great curveball, made Arod look stupid. Burnett always seems to get lit up against the Sox.

Wakefield is starting Wednesday, Penny's future here is uncertain. Long relief or DFA I would imagine. Also, the Sox claimed Billy Wagner from the Mets and are working out a deal.

I hate Brad Penny with the fury of a thousand suns.

The Red Sox gave him a very generous 1-year $5 million contract and a chance to reestablish his market value after coming off an injury plagued season. The least he could have done was come into camp prepared. The fat fuck couldn't be bothered and I can't be convinced it didn't hurt him this season. A starter gets paid to perform 30-45 times a season (with playoffs), you would think they could take an hour or two out of each day to train.

Its not being out of shape that hurts Penny, unless its because of his fat fingers that he can't throw anything but a fastball. El Guapo had that problem with his curveball.

You can't be a starter with one effective pitch. The Penny that pitched last night is the same one I've seen all year, the Yankees simply weren't fooled. I'm not sure how he lasted as long as he did.

From Feb. 2, after Penny bitched about the Dodgers not showing him the love (or the long term deal):
Wait a minute. You're telling me that despite Penny being a fat lazy out of shape slob virtually the entire time he was with the Dodgers (not once did he report in shape), despite being a guy that won't help instruct young guys (which the Dodgers have a ton of), despite not bothering to attend team meetings unless he feels like it, despite not playing the last few years because of phantom injuries, he's going to talk shit about people on the Dodgers not being as supportive as he felt they should have?

Are you fucking serious?

I hope he chokes on a drumstick that he tries to eat in one bite while sitting on the Sox bench because he's "hurt". I can't wait for the first time that mystery blister/fingernail/whateverhemakesupthatday to suddenly flare back up in the 2nd half next year.
I still can't believe he's not hurt, though his pathetic one trick pony show getting rocked is more satisfying.

As much as I hate the Dodgers, there is 1 thing I will admit. They are a pretty classy organization.

On another note, Vlad is seriously starting to get his power back. This lineup was scary without Torii and Vlad. Now its simply terrifying.

You can thank the rays for that.

Was just watching the Philly / Mets game. 9-6 in the bottom of the 9th, when a ball got past howard and then two shanked balls by Burntlett. 9-7, 0 outs, guy on 1st and 2nd, things were looking good. Being a Braves fan (and seeing how I was facing Pedro in a fantasy league) I was really hoping for the comeback. Francoeur comes up, 2-2 count, hits it down the middle where it's caught by Burntlett and because everybody ran for some fucking reason, he turns the unassisted triple play. fuck!

Braves beat the Marlins 7-5 behind 2 runs in the bottom of the 8th.

3.5 behind the Rockies in the Wild Card, pending their game later today.

Tell me about it. I have no clue to why Manual called for a hit run with no outs. I blame him and his idiot lackies for making dumb decisions like that. I really really really despise this dipshit.

The worst part about it..............Minaya and Manual are coming back for next season. I hope this was just one of those quickie question Fred just answered and the media blowing it out of proportion. These two with Bernazard single handedly fucked our organization from head to toe. The 4th highest payroll and nothing to show for it but injury after injury. Also i was listening to the radio today and a fan called up with a horrendus stat about the Mets Minor League System. i think it 6 of the 8 teams in the organization are in LAST place. WTF, does that tell you? are the wilpons this blind? its absurd to let these two numnuts stay.

Hats off to Pedro though. I dont care if he is wearing the enemy colors, He is still a Met in my eyes. He did what he had to do and gave his team a chance to win. I am actually happy a little bit the Mets decided to Put martinez's jersey up in display at Citi. The only decent thing they did this year.

Josh Beckett gave up 5 Homeruns to the Yankees tonight. Jeter, Matsui 2, Cano and Arod. Beckett had also given up at least 1 run in 10 straight innings.

The Mets are a joke. The only reason why Omar and Manuel are coming back next year because Coupon Fred is too cheap/broke to fire them and pay them for next year. While having to hire someone else to replace them.

Kinda surprised that the members of the Sox bullpen came out and already questioned the potential Wagner move. I understand Gagne blew up in their face, but Gagne was coming off two seasons where he barely pitched and a decent half-season in Texas. Wagner returned sooner than people expected and was throwing fucking smoke the other night. Before they knew who put the claim in, I was praying it was the Yankees. I would have loved to him in my team's bullpen.

I think they're scared that he might actually be dominant and take their (Declarmen's) role in the BP. Here's hoping the Mets do the right thing and just send him for nothing...haha

Seriously what else can happen to the Mets this year?!?!

Missing third base so the winning run didn't count, unassisted triple play, players getting injured walking down the dugout steps, etc. This has been a crazy crazy year.
Francoeur is getting a MRI today on his injured thumb. The injuries continue.
I never considered Francoeur all that good anyways. It might be a good thing if he's injured, that way you can "hopefully" get a better hitter in there. I say hopefully, because I'm not really sure who you have left that's still healthy.

He has been playing well since coming to the Mets. The Mets have nobody left so there is no way whoever replaces him is better.

Wow...now Santana is being shutdown. Seriously, please, anyone name a season crazier than the one the Mets have had this year, because I would love to read about it.

Whoa whoa, Francoeur has bounced back really well recently. He has been lighting it up for the Mets ever since he was traded here. He is way better than Church, has a canon for an arm from RF which plays well in to Citi, really good bat potentially at the 6 if we were healthy. It was one of the few good deals Omar has made but actually i give more credit to Frank Wren for proposing it. Franc basically is reviving his career here and im happy to have him. plus he is only 25...He still has a ton of upside.
He has been playing well since coming to the Mets. The Mets have nobody left so there is no way whoever replaces him is better.
QFT on that. It looks like Jeremy Reed will end up taking his spot since he is the only legit RF we have left.

tell me about it. I would have shut him down anyway. his elbow is in pain and its the cause of his low velocity. Shut him down save him for next year. I hope i dont see Wright or any DL player come back since at this point its obvious that they wont make a difference.

For Francouer, sure he's been doing well since being traded, but his 08 / 09 seasons with the braves, he's been very lackluster. For finding somebody better, it was sort of said half jokingly, but regardless.

As for David Wright, I was reading on TSN earlier today that he expects to be activated around the time he's eligible to come off the the DL. I want to say it's a little surprising, considering the Mets are all but mathmatically eliminated, but I'm not all that sure it is. Personally, I'm glad he might be coming back seeing how I'm competing for money in a fantasy league where I own him.

Also, tonight's a tough night to be a Giants fan. 14th inning, you go up 4-1, walk the bases loaded, then walk Eaton to make it 4-2, then a game ending grand slam. Ouch.
