2009 MLB Discussion Thread

I'm ok with the LaRoche deal. A bit more power than Kotchman, both good fielders.

But I don't see it making that much of a difference. The Braves' biggest need is for a true power hitter to put in the clean up spot. But there just wasn't one available.

They need new ownership willing to spend a lot more money, if they had that they could have kept Teixeira.
Again..........wonder if he will accept this time, since he's on the DL.
he probably would have to this time. The pads will be far from contending and all they have left now is Gonzalez. If he wants to win, then it needs to be with a better ball club.

Looks like the Halladay deal fell apart when Toronto wanted both Buchholz and Bard.

Its just as well that he goes nowhere, he won't have any impact on the playoff race in Toronto.

I'm happy with the Jake Peavy acquisition for the Sox. I guess this means that Peavy will play again this season after being listed as "50/50" a couple weeks ago.
Not excited about the Rolens deal. The Red sent Edwin and a spec for him, who was rumored to be Yonder Alonso, Reds 2008 1st.
Trust me, you will fall in love with Rolen. Edwin is nowhere near the fielder that Rolen is who has seven Gold Gloves! Ediwn is lucky to even cleanly catch a ball sometimes. Rolen is also the clutch hitter that the Reds have been lacking. I hated to see him leave my Cardinals a few years ago...heck I would take him back in a heartbeat but he and La Russa don't like each other.

The Reds are the local team and now that Rolen is here Ill have someone else to root for besides Votto and Bruce...the rest of the Reds seem so lazy and don't have any hustle in them. Edwin was one of the Reds least likely to hustle...at least he isn't as bad as Brandon Phillips. I'd like to walk out on the field and kick him in the ass sometimes for his lack of hustle.
"It's tough," Martinez said. "This is my house. This is my home."
Stuff like this makes me almost sick over the Martinez trade. He wasn't just a good consistent player, he was a great guy, and if anyone would have given the Indians a hometown discount to help rebuild it was Victor.

I'm pleased they got him but I'm not thrilled, I'm more happy that he didn't cost Buchholz.

Not quite the catching solution I was hoping for but catching 3 out of 7 days with time at 1st and DH is probably a pretty good situation for him. He'll DH against left handed hitters and play 1st against righties when not catching, with Youkilis going to 3rd and Lowell sitting.

Lowell won't like being on the bench a couple times a week but its probably the best thing for him at this point. I was hoping for a young starting catcher, neither Varitek or Martinez is capable of catching a ton of games anymore. He's also not an impact bat, though he's an improvement.

I really liked Masterson but he was reminding me more of Casey Fossum every day. He still can't get lefties out. I love his sinker-slider combo but he really needs another out pitch. 89-90mph fastball, and he has an OK changeup but he doesn't use it that often. He should be a starter in Cleveland, he'll probably do pretty well. Worst case scenario is that he's a good setup man. Hagadone and Price are two pretty good pitching prospects, both were 1st round picks in 07 and 08, but they're both in A ball and were behind a lot of other guys in the system. Hagadone is a big left handed power pitcher coming off of Tommy John surgery.

Love seeing the crowd in Baltimore chanting "Papi, Papi" btw. Almost flew to Baltimore for this series when Southwest was offering $35 flights. Orioles tickets are laughably cheap.

Congrats to Mark Reynolds, with that homer at Citi he is now 2nd in home runs in the majors.

Edit: Thanks for the run, Green!

Do you really feel Lowell is the one going to most affected? IMO it is big pappi. Lowell has roughly 45 less ab's, 10 less rbi's, 5 less homers then pappi, but has almost 70 points higher batting average. They have 6 guys for 4 spots, and if you want to field the best team then ortiz and varitek will take the biggest hit in playing time

Lowell will DH some of the time when Martinez is at 1st, depending on who is pitching. No need for Papi to start against lefties at all anymore.

Lowell is still a good defensive 3rd baseman but it'll be better for his hip to not be on the field all the time. Him and Papi will lose some at bats but Varitek stands to lose the most since he won't be starting 4 out of 5 days anymore.

Lowell has almost completely lost his first step and range. He'll probably never fully recover from hip surgery.

Lowells range is a liabilty in the field. On Dale/holly on weei the other day they where going over some stats that rate players +/- on if an avg fielder would make the play. Lowells stats where horrible. Regardless both pappi and kotchman can sit vs lefties thus making the decision easier.

IMO youk can use a day off a week as well. Besides last year, youk has historically dropped off in the 2nd half. This year both youk and bay have had there monthly stats drop each month.
Well, "cheating" or not, the way they were obtaining and using steroids was illegal. So, they might not have been breaking any baseball rules, but they were committing crimes. And it wasn't recognized as a problem, because everyone involved decided to turn a blind eye, because that big era of offensive was helping revive the game after the strike.

The reason Barry Bonds got the most flack is two-fold.

First, he is one of the biggest assholes in the history of the game. And to make matters worse, he had no issue publicly displaying how big of an asshole he is. He disrespected Babe Ruth ("don't talk about him no more"). He disrespected the Hall of Fame ("I take care of me"). All in all, he's a jackass with little respect for the game that made him.

And of course, the other reason is because he holds so many important records. Nobody is gonna write articles about Jason Grimsley's steroid use, because no one cares. Did he play roles on good teams? Sure. But he's not Barry Bonds. He didn't change the game.
This is so true. Nobody seems to remember this tidbit.

I think the difference is Michael Jordan actually COULD make money licensing himself. He didn't go around pissing off every media outlet around him. Where has Bonds prospered from removing himself from the MLBPA?

Obviously, I'm not going to convince you of anything. You're a Giants fan...so you're a Bonds fan. It's fine. Just acknowledge the bias.

 @ Oliver's army...

Edit: It amazes me that they still haven't sent Chris Young down to AAA. He hasn't hit all season (.198 Avg) can't even get a decent bunt down, and doesn't have the common sense to throw to the cutoff man when there is no play at the plate, thereby allowing the runners to move up.

What a catch Mark Reynolds. dove over the tarp to make a sick grab. Thank god pagan bailed us out of this one. Oliver will be Oliver.

That is the third catch he has made like that in the past month, I'll have to find clips of them.

Yeah we lost, but how about that home run from Reynolds? I don't think most players hit it that far in Citi Field too often? I'd love to see him in the home run derby, he has a ton of power.

agreed. Guy has some serious power. Not even Wright has gotten used to length of Citifield..hence why his power numbers are way down. If Reynolds can do it in 2 straight games.....than the guy needs to go derby.

I actually got to see the White Sox play today thanks to WGN. It figures that they'd lose, but it was a decent game and 3 out of 4 from the Yankees is pretty good anyway.

Man, Carlos Quentin sucks compared to last season. Lingering wrist/hand injury, or was last year a fluke?

A fluke, I loved Quentin when he was playing for us and I didn't want him to be traded, but I don't see him putting up the same numbers he did last year anytime soon. He is way too injury prone.

Bonds is a dick......just stating the facts.

And Jordan didn't go around pissing the media off? Hah.

Just give Lincecum the next 5 Cy Youngs so we don't have to deal with traveling expenses for media members.

Went to HOU-SF game last night. Matt Cain looked great until the 5th. He was fooling everyone except Carlos Lee. Carlos was crushing Cain every at bat. Lee's only out was a 405 ft out to dead center.

8 hits for SF through 3 innings and they only managed 2 runs in that time. There's not a guy in that lineup that looks like he's dying for the shot at the plate. Even Rowand looked lost out there.

Sandoval is a fatass.

Mark Reynolds just absolutely smashed the ball at Citi Field, he is now two away from tying with Pujols in home runs.

"What's amazing about Reynolds' night is that he now has four home runs at the new, challenging Citi Field, in all of three games and 12 at-bats. He's hit as many home runs in the new ballpark as David Wright has in 195 at-bats, and he's behind only Gary Sheffield and Fernando Tatis for most home runs hit there all season. Those guys have five homers each … in a combined 221 at-bats at Citi Field."

Even though we are not going anywhere this season, it's nice to see some of our players improve. I think getting a new hitting coach has helped quite a bit.

Its pretty bad when a stat like this arises. I mean Fernando "I love the double play" Tatis and Gary Sheffield share the lead in most home runs at Citi..and it took Reynolds just a measly 3 games to almost share that lead...in fact he 2nd with Wright.

I love Howard Johnson to death.....but seriously what the hell is going on?Why are all of our guys hitting like pitchers? I don't see these beards cut anytime soon. I hope they stay sub .500 so at least we have a shot at a protected top 10 pick....which i hope Minaya doesnt fuck that up if he is still around...which i hope not.

I [heart] Mark Reynolds. Hits for very decent AVG, absolutely crushing the ball right now, and steals bases at a very respectable clip. By miles my best free agent fantasy pickup. I just wanted a guy to fill in roster off days. The guy qualifies at 1B/3B, and with Youkilis at 3B and Pujols at 1B, Reynolds is now my full time DH. What a stud.

Tough game last night......shit didn't click......worst outing by Cainer this year.

Rowand was/is a horrible signing.....remember in the old MLB thread I was for Hunter and against Rowand and the whole board loved the Rowand signing.....

Sandoval is fat......but he's the best 3B in the NL and is fast.

for 1/2 the price you are getting roughly the same BA, a tad less RBI's (but considering the lineups that is understandable) similiar obp and a tad lower slugging. For the price $9mill compared to $18mill, I still think it was a better sigining. (based off of this years contract payout)

plus Hunter has been hurt for awhile now. I agree with this. Half the price and you get a healthier CF who is decent all around.

wow so i guess we never got rid of Aaron Heilman huh. Sean Green looks like he has lost it and can't believe K-Rod out right blew a save..and did in terrible fashion. I guess thats the story with these Mets. 1 more game to get Omar and Jerry FIRED!

edit: oh yeah and a haha to Luis Castillo who will add himself to the injured list..by slipping on steps.

Honestly, I gotta agree with the previous two posters. I'd much rather have Rowand for half the price. Hunter is a great, great defensive CF, but Rowand is no joke out there, either. And offensively, they are quite similar players. Just look at their career numbers. Hunter is having a great season this year, minus the health issues, but I doubt he would produce the same numbers in the SF line-up.

Add Niese to the injured list. I really have never seen anything like this. They should just bench Wright and Santana for the year so some freak accident doesn't happen to one of them.

You know, if Pagan could stay healthy, he's not a bad player. Makes some mental errors, but damn, he's got 7 triples this year in about 150 ABs. He's second in the NL.

yeah seriously. Johan already dealt with a nasty injury this year and the kick in the balls part would be if Dubs went down. This reminds me of the Buffalo Bills 2 years ago. They lost i think 8 or 9 of their defensive starters for the year and were never the same. This frightens me even more because he is young and i dont know how he will be when he comes back. What a way to ruin an actually good day for the mets....it looks like Figs will be in the that spot for the rest of the season. I think they should just shut him down if it gets worse. No need to rush him back.

Pagan was with the mets before until he was picked up by the cubbies and then traded back to the mets lol. He is basically a better version of Endy Chavez minus the awe dropping plays endy used to create. He is definitley better as a 4th choice than Jeremy Reed.
I wish the Mets didn't have injuries, so that Mets fans didn't have an excuse.
Well what can you do. Your top 3 hitters all go down within a month. I dont think any team not even the Phillies can recover from a loss like that. How hollow of a lineup would it be if the Philles lost Utley,Howard, and Rollins all in one shot and never got them back.....Werth and Ibanez would never see pitches and then whose left? i dont see anyone left with an ounce of power as those 5. I don't care what ball club your from but to lose about nearly 300 RBIS, around 80 homers, and 40-60 stolen bases......losing that production decimate teams. Wright has no protection so he has to swing at everything and besides Francouer....we have no power hitters or threats. I think its ok for mets fans to use this as an excuse. If we are out right losing with Reyes, Delgado, and Beltran healthy..than for sure we suck outright but i can't bring myself to that because the mets have had success with these guys in....well some success.. in the past, but im sure this would have been a season long brawl for first instead of what we have now.

im sure enough Philly fans would feel the same if 3/4 of their team went down in one fowl swoop and had a GM who did nothing about it.

and we dont make excuses. There was no excuse for the two choke jobs they pulled the last two years. They outright sucked at the end and Phillies pulled it both times. what excuses can we make from that?

EDIT: well its official. Niese is out for the season. We even lose prospects to injury. See, nothing you can do about this. shit happens and injuries tank seasons. well here's looking to 2010.
:-({|= Your just mad that your team can't beat us
Even so, the Rays are still looking up in the standings. So its a win/loss and loss/win for Rays and Sox fans.

Rest of the month will be a big test. 4@ NYY, 4vs DET, 3 @ TEX, 3 @ TOR, 3 vs NYY, 4 vs CWS, and 3 vs TOR.

Only team that really scares me right now is TEX, the 1st team to sweep the Sox in a series this season, and it was at TEX too.

Did they seriously just play a taped national anthem at Yankee Stadium? The last time I saw a taped national anthem played at a sports event was at a minor league hockey game.
