CAGiversary!

FAQ:

When does the sale being?
The sale begins on MONDAY SEPT 12th when bestbuy opens

Is the sale also online?
no one knows for sure, often bb keeps prices the same, but like i said, this isnt a guarantee. some people are ordering online now and hoping to pricematch later, again, this isnt a guarantee.

Why are people saying they are getting games now, when the sale dosent start until monday?
some people are buying games ahead of time for full price and going back later to get a price adjustment on the games.

BB.com says the games are out of stock in stores around me, is that reliable?
no, its not reliable, it might be right, or it might not, this is from first hand experiance i had today (going to BB then checking avaliability of games i knew where on the shelves when i got home..)

Should i call and ask about the sale?
no, very rarely is calling and asking about a big unadvertised sale a good idea. it can tip off employees that the sale is even going on, also some empolyees might know about it and might have been told to deny it, and some might have no clue at all.

Will the $5 off coupon work on these games? (http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=58353)
that will be YMMV, the coupon says in black and white, excludes clearance items, so if you get shot down dont cry about it.
Why didn't you use a $5 coupon for each game and save another $10?
They would only let me use 1 coupon cuz they read it and said only 1 per coupon per household. I would if I could. I had a handfull of 'em printed. How are you able to get more than one per transaction?
Not valid on clearance games.
These aren't clearance, just price drops - they may seem clearance, but generally stores have different numbers designated for clearance, such as 9.96 or something similar.

I was under the impression this is just a huge price drop to move stuff out.

I've heard that they're clearance games and I've heard that they're price drops from BB employees. Essentially, even the managers don't know what they're talking about. Some guy tried to tell me that it was clearance so he couldn't do the coupon thing. I went to a different register and the guy rang it up with the coupon without any questions.

This is YMMV. Some people report no problem using 1 coupon for many games or using multiple coupons for multiple games, or only being allowed to use one coupon per visit - depends on the store and the cashier.

They did that to me when I was getting $5 games for the EB games Gran Turismo 4 Trade-in offer. They wouldn't let me use multiple coupons. It was not below me to buy one game, go to my car, drop off the game, go back in and get another one at the same cashier and did it again for a total of 3 games.

And the coupons are allowed with this games - I used one for Freekstyle today to get it free.

The only game I got that I actually wanted was Mechassault. The rest of the stuff I got because it was there and within my price range, though I got a number of platformers (Ty 2, Tak 2, Spyro, Crash) and I generally enjoy those. I would really like Twin Snakes, but no luck.

Hmmm.

I went by my best buy last night and none of the prices were correct.

all of the 4.99 games were 9.99, and all of the 9.99 games were 19.99.

Hmm, I really wanted cabela's big game hunter 2005 for XBOX.

Anyone have an extra copy?
Wow, so how many people are actually finding games that they REALLY wanted? Or is everyone kinda just getting what they feel could entertain them for a little while for cheap?
My store had next to nothing good for the GBA/Xbox/GCN. I only really wanted an Astro Boy and one of the Namco Museums there, but my store has not had that for as long as I can remember.

So yeah, I would just basically pick up something decent to entertain me for a while.

Yep... it took alot of legwork on my part (and some others) but I managed to get four games I really wanted.

Ys
Growlanser
Silent Hill 4 ps2 (this one took some effort)
Otogi 2 (thanks to Pimpin333)

I had a whole cart full of 4.99 games online, but I decided against it when they all showed up at 9.99.

Best buy and other company's that offer there extended warrenties really give you the SOL if you don't buy there useless EW's... They treat you fairly right as long as they think your going to get the extra protection. Just before they answer any questions you might have on the product, they lay down the "before I continue, I don't work on commission but for 29.99 for 3 years..bah bah bah"

I rescently picked up an excellent photo printer for my mom for her bday and the guy was smacking me down with the warrenty more than information (good thing I went to pcmag for a full review before I bought it). I told him I will think about it..after he got the product he took the EW to the counter for the lady to ring up, while he went off to do something else and the lady turned around, i quicky move the EW paper work away from her and set it aside and had her ring it up... then the prick swong by looked at the registar started yelling at the lady as to why did she not ring up the EW. He then asked me "Sir you want the EW or not?" and I was like no thanks and he stormed off. After rebates this printer would have cost me 60 bucks..not worth it...if it was like an 800 printer , yea sure go ahead.

bottom line is that there is a chance that either the fools who shipped it into the truck or the fools who unloaded it droped it...it happens all the time and you gotta pray that the manufacturer packed it good enough. Kind of stupid for them to say that you broke it...If you want and even exchange it should be no problem, if you are getting your money back then there is a problem.
Go to http://www.bestbuysux.org

That will answer all those questions. Bestbuy is a HORRIBLE store, they sold me a broken TV in the box. They also wouldn't take it back an hour later with the receipt, saying I broke it on purpose, or the manufacturer broke it, not them of course. Bottom line, I got refurbished TV for the price of brand new. The manufacturer paid to have it fixed through their warranty.

I had to buy a printer once and the guy wouldn't take no for an answer. He was like "oh, well these printers have a habit of drying up after 6 months and then not working so you need to buy the warranty." I was like "Oh... well if it's a piece of crap, I guess I don't want it" and I walked out. Not a particularly brilliant tactic, but kinda fun just to see the guy's reaction.

By extended warranty, do you mean BB's PoS warranty service? Both times my parents went to BB, they told me they got some BS from the people in the customer service center. Like when the foot pedal on their vacume broke, the people said since it had scratches all on it, that they must have treated it badly... WTF? It's a damn vacume, of course it's going to get scratched.

I never buy warranties on my stuff. Partly because if something breaks, I can probably fix it.

Just tossing this out there for anyone in the SD area, check the BBs in Escondido, Mira Mesa, and Mission Valley, got Astro and Harvest outta the three, like many other CAGs here...pretty dissapointed. I was really hoping to two: Y's and Growlanser, but of course that was too much to ask for...

my bb had a buttload of astro boy for gba..maybe i should go hoard them and pimp them here for those that didnt get any.

I got someone to check out the Rocky Mount, NC BB for me yesterday. There's nothing left worth talking about. However, I was able to get the last copy of FF: Dawn of Souls.

lol do you know how many times i heard that when looking for a printer? I have been looking for a descent all in one printer (scanner/memory card reader/printer/etc) since summer. True if they "admit" that they have a habbit of drying up in 6 months, then they just shot themselves in the foot. I use to work in retail before working for the public education system, both as non commission and commission.. Saying something like that is one way to loose a sale. The only reason why I would get an addon (extra inks) is if i get a discount when I by accessories. When discounts are mentioned, yes you might get a good sale there, if not, no point in buying them right and yes i do have a USB cable(too many i think and no it doesn't have to be gold plated for extra speed!).

I did pick up my all in one printer from best buy 2 weeks ago, let the guy blah blah, told him i will be back in 10 mins because i had to do stuff at CS and looked around..came back 25 mins later and quickly picked up the printer and headed as fast as I could to the register ..but of course the cashier hammered me for the EW :( The kid didn't even believe me when there was a 30 dollar gift card instantly with the purchase of the printer even though i showed him the sales paper AND the actual sign near the display model. All that trouble because I didn't get a the EW..and even after I got the card they were like you know you can use this GC now and get the extended warrenty for basically free...true..but I want to save the card for black friday :)

the big problem is that trainers/managers never properly train employees in the EW policies. They all tell them that they earn extra money when people get them and usually say it covers this and that. If you ever read the fine print, these things usually never cover , lost, stolen, or damage on purpose..yet employees say it covers everything just for 30 bucks (or whatever)..

Why places like EB or TRU try to make you buy an extended warrenty on a video game is beyond me. One way or another that game will go cheap or be dumped to files and be one day emulatible on the pc...

(Off-Topic)
You know, that reminds me of what happened last winter when a friend of mine picked up NBA 2K5 for the PS2 at Circuit City. They were selling it for $10 and the cashier asked if he wanted an extended warranty:

---
Cashier: Would you like to get an extended warranty for your game for an extra $10? It'll cover all damages, etc., etc...
Friend: Well, couldn't I just buy the game again for $10 if something were to happen?
Cashier: Oh, uh...
---

The cashier just looked stunned for a moment before realizing the joke and we all laughed it off...

Next time, tell them to ring up separate transactions for each game. That's what I always have them do.

Does everyone have a Best Buy horror story?

This was several years ago, but I'll never forget it. I wanted a scanner that was on special. I brought it, plus a game and a CD to the register. I had bought hundreds of dollars worth of crap there before.

The guy scans the scanner, and starts talking about an extended warranty.

I interrupt him when he pauses. "No thanks."

He keeps talking, giving the pitch on the extended warranty.

I interrupt him again. "No thank you."

He keeps talking. I can't believe it. "Hello?" blah blah blah
"Hello? I don't want it." blah blah blah "You mean you have
to keep offering me this even after I say no?" blah blah blah.

He's still talking and I really just want to go. I put my fingers in my
ears, turned so the people behind me could hear and said loudly
"I can't hear you. I'm not listening."

Finally, the guy stops. But then he says, "Excuse me. You're being rude."

A little mushroom cloud appears above my head. "I'm being rude?
You don't think it's rude to keep talking over me? All I want to do
is buy this stuff and you won't take no for an answer on a warranty
I obviously don't want. You can keep it."

Then I walked out.

Then I sent complaint letters everywhere I could think of. It got
the attention of the store manager, who telephoned me and asked
me to visit him the next time I was in the store.

Yeah, like I really want to do that. But I did, next time I was
in the area -- it's next to a Toys R Us, or I probably wouldn't have
bothered. He apologized and blamed it on the store's recently fired
previous manager. I didn't really believe him, but it never happened
again. Then again, it's not like I've bought much from them since,
apart from video games and the occasional CD.

That seems a bit childish.

A CAG here is going to stop by a BB and try to pick me up an Astro Boy if they have any and enough copies for me and him(If I convinced him to pick one up for himself). If he isn't able to too, then maybe you could do me a little favor? ;)

I read in a post here that someone bought Astro Boy for $9.99, so I guess it's higher then what's on the list.

I picked up Second Sight, Mech Assault 2: LE, and Mr Driller at the BB in Watertown, Ma.
That seems a bit childish.
It got his attention when saying, "No thanks." twice didn't do shit. I think it was fully justified really.

When Nintendo was offering RE0/Metroid Prime/etc/etc free with purchase of a GC, I picked one up at Best Buy... and was promptly ambushed by the EW Assault. A BB Employee saw me pick up a GC and offered me the EW. I turned him down and walked away. Got to the register and was hit AGAIN by a diff BB Goon. When I turned her down, the BB Manager sent another person to ask if I wanted it while the clerk rang my stuff up. Another kill! The BB Manager finally came up himself and asked if I was sure. Running Riot! Only then did the clerk finally take my card so I can pay to leave. That's just absurd that 4 employees were pushing the heck out of their useless EW. After that, I pretty much avoid BB for large investments like systems. Anything bigger, like TV, the horror stories on BBSux alone keeps me away.

And yeah.. I'm a Devil Customer.

Ys and Growlanser came from online, Silent Hill 4 was PM'ed at the Circuit City across the street, and Otogi 2 came from another CAG.

I knew in advance that all our local Best Buy's sucked ass on selection... I go to the Tyrone one often for DVD's and such.

All they had was two Eyetoy's and Bard's Tale for Xbox.

They were on a table that said something about 50% off everything on the table... I didn't check the price, because the boxes looked a bit trashed.

They had no games or anything with them, just the eyetoy itself. The earliest I can pick them up is Friday, since i'm waiting for my new credit card to come in and I don't get paid in cash until Friday.

I might be able to send someone tommorrow morning to get one, as well.

I might be able to send someone tommorrow morning to get one, as well.
seriously, if they're $9.99 like they're supposed to be and you can pick up 1 or 2 of them, i'll pay for 'em...i'm not sure what you'd be looking for, but i'm sure we can come up with something fair...though i doubt they're still there...either way, thanks

Well, they were there as of 9 pm last night, hopefully they will still be there tommorrow morning, and I will try and score both.

you might be a God, thanks

and please PM me with any more information...because as you're aware of, things can get buried pretty damn fast in this thread
GET ME THE fuckING EYETOY'S NOW!!!!!!!! oh...did i mention PLEASE?!!! seriously, are you sure they were the $9.99 ones and not the $29.99 ones?
I just saw like 5 eye toys in BestBuy.

Yeah, it only took them 2 days to put my copy of Growlanser on back order as well.

It looks like they keep giving a magical ship date of 9/17/05, which I'm not really buying into since these are all essentially clearance games.

I remember my Best Buy had a copy of Scaler and a couple copies of Tak 2 for Xbox left, but both are $10. If they were $5, I'd probably bit, but $10 each? Don't really know how bad I need average platforming fluff I'll probably barely end up playing.

Where are you getting this date of 09/17 on your ship date? My order doesn't have that info on-screen, just "Backordered".

It's in the back-order e-mails they send out

Order Date: 09/12/2005

Qty Product Description

1 Mortal Kombat: Deception Kollector's Edition-Xbox

Status: Backordered

1 BloodRayne 2-Xbox

It's been in both back-order e-mails, but it just seems like a placeholder date. I'd doubt they'll actually get them in that day.

I just called my BB and they said that MK was 30 bucks. When they bring it up does it not register as the clearance price or what. Also does CC price match any of these deals.

Off topic. Sorry.

Can someone tell me why BB pushes their warranty so persistently? Extra commisions?

Policy states they need an advertisement to price match, and may also state they need the item to be in-stock. Unless the manager makes exceptions. For instance, my CC will let me just tell them about a lower price in a different local store, and they will call to confirm the item to be in-stock.

The sale is only on the Collector's Edition of Mortal Kombat: Deception, not the standard version, which is still $30.

As far as CC price matching, I don't know for sure as I do not have on of their stores in my town. I think if the game is in stock at Best Buy, they would.

It's probably commisions despite what the employees sometimes say. Really though, it's sheer profit for them since they maybe have to replace something once out of every 1000 times.

I either get unlucky, or they just hire bad employees; but I often times get a jackass in the CS department. By the way, my store doesn't have a sign saying "Customer Service", and rightfully so...

Picked up my FF I & II: Dawn Of Souls and GTA, both for GBA at BB - Didn't have to adjust the price or anything. As the CSR was processing the order, the price automatically adjusted down to the sale price.

Just an FYI that the sale price will ring up at the register for in-store pickup orders, in case anyone was thinking that the adjustment would be a hassle. :)

I believe so. My niece in Detroit got fired from the local BB since apparently she wasn't pushing the EW enough. I don't know much more than that, but that's what her mom told me.

And getting back on topic - I haven't gotten any emails about anything being backordered. Weird.
