Captain Lou Albano (1933-2009) memorial wrestling topic

Daffney getting slammed to the floor by Abyss was a pretty cool spot.

The Suicide/Daniels spot was pretty dangerous, especially for Daniels. Hopefully he wasn't hurt.

I wonder if Booker T has a legit injury from the Tag Title match?

I got to say it was filled with bad spots all night especially in the Ultimate X Match. Suicide just keep doing things that could hurt him & the people he did the moves to.

I love how this PPV put everybody in World Elite over except for Homicide cause they have the Legends and TNA Tag Belts.

One the worst spots of the night was when Rob Terry was suppose to powerbomb Robert rude through a table outside the ring but Rude almost missed the table and hit the uncovered floor pretty hard.

Considering all the talk of Booker wanting out & TNA ready to get rid of him, I'd say that could be their way of showing him the door.

Luckily they did not give all the belts to WE like they did MEM. Imo, Angle/ Morgan was the highlight of the night. Not that great of a ppv, especially considering this is their biggest event of the year. Like you said, alot of bad spots & wtf moments.

Bound For Glory was amazing last night, perhaps even the best show I've ever seen in person. We were seated dead center facing the ring, and we had a perfect view of the action all night except for when this one kid 2 rows down kept holding up Kevin Nash and WrestleZone.com signs.

Oh, and TNA had a great deal going on. You could purchase a TNA tote bag with a "TNA Pay=Per-View Tour 2009" t-shirt with all PPV logos, and a whopping 4 DVDs, for $20. Since Jed got a duplicate of his DVD, I ended up taking home 5 DVDs and the shirt for $20.

I'll have a bunch of pics uploaded today if anyone cares to check them out. I only have 1 pic each of Sting and Styles since my camera died when the main event was starting, but I got many other decent pics (and many blurry ones, too).

BFG thoughts -

The pre-show match with Lethal Consequences vs. the Guns was incredibly fast-paced and a good, short match. It certainly played into the Ultimate X match perfectly due to that. I like that they turned a bad situation (whatever happened with the Pope) into a really good one and wound up giving two guys PPV paydays who wouldn't have otherwise gotten one and were then able to shine in the match. Red's new gear somehow looks even more indy-riffic than his previous stuff. He wears sneakers now. Yowza. The flip uranage spot off the cables was insane and really disgusting. Joe's jump off of the balcony onto steps last year was stupid as hell, but his was even worse. Daniels landed right on his head, the ref and Taz were each terrified, as was I when I saw it. That left me with no desire to ever watch one of these matches again, so of course they're doing one on Impact.

The Knockouts tag title match was fine considering TBP were in it. This act just fell off the Earth without Angelina - the ring work dropped, Lacey doesn't have anywhere near the presence of Love, and Madison isn't as good as she was in the ring either.

The legends title 3-way went on too long, although it had some nice spots - I liked EY suplexing Hernandez and Hernandez shoulder blocking EY over the top rope, but these guys just had no chemistry together. The ending also looked horrible, largely due to the director as it didn't appear like EY threw Hernandez into Nash - it just looked like Nash fell backwards and Hernandez fell forward for some reason, and then EY hit a bad cradle for the win. So now he's a singles champion. Wonderful. They make Hernandez look like a fool for weeks, then he doesn't even win the B-level singles belt after losing his shot at the world title due to the WE and his own idiocy. Dude's still over though, but I wish they'd have him wrestle in the Supermex gear as opposed to his street wear.

The double tag title match was a mix of good stuff and some bad stuff. The best part of the match for me was Steiner running wild with the Frankensteiner off the top, the belly to belly off the top, a chain of suplexes and clotheslines and then taking for more bumps than I expected him to take - including one through a table. The only downside for him here was his head smacking right into the ladder on a bump - otherwise, he was just on fire here. Booker being a goof was amusing, but also annoying - especially with him suffering some mystery injury, and then appearing to laugh throughout the entire deal. Shit like that makes me hope that WWE doesn't bring him in, but I'm sure the second he's back, that kind of behavior will stop. The bad stuff here would be Roode getting pressed to the floor and basically missing the table - resulting in him taking a Spike Dudley-La Resstance bump to the floor. The director missed a bunch of stuff because, shockingly, entirely too much was going on with four teams involved. Sure, that's TNA's fault, but they've had massive brawls before like this - he should know how to shoot them by now. A lot of the stuff just came off as guys re-enacting a classic WWE match, but screwing up stuff more often, which hurt the match. However, I do like the booking - 3D shouldn't have lost the IWGP tag belts to begin with, so they win them and get another world tag title reign added to their list, plus New Japan's happy, plus TBI wins the TNA Tag belts, which I'm all for because they're a great team. I just hope they don't Freebird rule them and count Rob Terry as a champion.

I didn't have high hopes for the Knockouts match before because they just haven't meshed well together, and they found a way to sink beneath those low expectations. Much of that is due to Tara missing 90% of the match to fight with Kim Couture. While I'm glad they at least got her in after teasing her when Tara did commentary, I don't like any avenue this can go in. I can't imagine TNA having a shoot match on a show, and I don't think Kim could do a good worked one since Tara probably can't carry her to a good match - let alone that is good but has to look believable because of the MMA background of each. It really took away from this match, which was mostly ODB vs. Kong, which has never been good, although I liked the finish, even if I was annoyed by the referee NOT GETTING RID OF THE CHAIR despite having all this new authority. He just stood there like a moron and let the thing come in and out of the ring, then ODB hit a bad-looking facebuster for the win. And now they're doing Kong vs. Saeed in their match ever after a multi-year partnership for free on TV. Fail.

Lashley-Joe was better than I expected given Lashley's bland regular matches and Joe's illness. They each worked pretty hard here, and surprise, surprise - when Lashley's actually booked like an MMA-style guy, his matches are better for it. He busted out a bunch of submissions, which I liked because it gave them a chance to establish some new ones for him as major moves and got away from the trend that I hate where guys in submission matches only go for ONE MOVE the entire match. Here, if one thing didn't work, they went on to something else. Simple, logical, and rarely done. The side choke used to finish the match struck me as a bit odd in a way because it wasn't the submission they'd built up for him that I was sure would end it - however, had they used the dragon sleeper, they couldn't have done the ref's discretion finish as well because Joe had to be prone on the mat afterwards to make it work. So what they did here was a bit jarring, but smart because they at least tried to get new stuff over in both the move and that style of finish.

Foley vs. Abyss wasn't even one of Abyss's best matches, let alone Foley's. This thing reminded me a lot of the ONS '06 tag match that varied between being really awesome and memorable at times and then just becoming awful at various times as well. It started off insane with the barb wire bat being used to wear down Abyss so Foley could hit him with a neckbreaker. Logically, things should have been reversed there, but whatever, the neckbreaker at least placed Abyss where he needed to be so Foley could jump on top off him off the set (which was TNA's best one yet by the way).

Then Abyss cut him off, Foley knocked him THROUGH THE STAGE and dove on top of him as Abyss twitched. This all happened in about the first three minutes, which reminded me of the insane Genesis '07 match Abyss had with Black Reign that OPENED THE SHOW and had about 1,000 stupid things happen - not the least of which was the debut of Rellik, whose name was indeed Killer spelled backwards. Stuff happened with a barb wire board, people bled, I wondered why I was watching this, and why people with actual talent outside wrestling like Stevie (who is a tech blogger and professor at a college) and Foley (best-selling author) were participating in this garbage match. Then Daffney came out to get chokeslammed through a barb wire board. Which we had to be told about because the director missed it. So yeah, that sucked in about every way imaginable. It was disgusting AND they missed it. And they can't even use it on TV for video packages because of the man-on-woman violence thing...so why do it?

Then Abyss won after black hole slamming Stevie onto tacks to take him out so his chokeslam onto the barb wire board could lead to him dragging Stevie over to count the pin (ala WWF OVER THE EDGE 1998). So again, like the tag title match, this wound up feeling like an homage to a better match in another company. It did, however, blow off the Abyss-Foley/Stevie/Daffney feud really well, so at least this show settled one feud.

Angle-Morgan was Morgan's coming out party as a top-level guy thanks to the second-half of the match. The first half was nothing special at all, but the second-half featured a ton of finishers being attempted, kicked out of, and then the match ended with a victory roll after Morgan tried to hit Angle with an Electric Chair Drop. He came off as more Angle's equal here than he ever has before, and the handshake was a nice touch - it seemed like even after all the shit Angle's been through with Morgan, he had to give him his due which helped give Morgan a rub. Angle definitely put Morgan over without losing to him here, and they built up a rematch perfectly since it was just a lucky rollup that won. The only thing I didn't like outright about this was them announcing a 15 minute time limit, ending the match within 30 seconds of that...and not mentioning it at all. A simple "10 minutes have gone by, 5 minutes are remaining in this contest" announcement would have helped things out and added to the drama.

Sting vs. AJ was good - not up to the level of AJ's match with Angle on Impact, or Angle's match with Sting two years ago, but pretty close to Joe-Sting last year, minus the stupid bumps and stuff. I liked the fight over the reverse DDT - that made sense since both men have it in their arsenal as major moves, and the booking was fine face vs. face stuff. The finish though...wow did that ever suck. AJ hits the Pele on the apron (finally actually hitting it out of nowhere as opposed to the same way he's hit it forever) and then Sting walks backwards. And keeps walking. And keeps walking. Then he kinda falls down after about a minute and AJ splashes him. For one thing, the finish just looked absurd. For another, AJ's used a far more awesome springboard 450 on FREE TV to win, but on the BIGGEST PPV OF THE YEAR he does a basic splash? I'm not sure if it was done for his safety, or to protect Sting, but it just added to things being anti-climatic. Then AJ gave Sting the mic, he said some stuff, the crowd kind of ate it up, he basked in the spotlight for maybe a minute then they played his theme and the show ended. I really hope that they don't try to do a Flair sendoff-style deal for him because with how frantic this company paces stuff they'd do it during a commercial break and then air highlights when the show came back on the air.

Here's the newest Observer Radio show with a BFG 2009 review and AN HOUR AND A HALF INTERVIEW WITH PAUL HEYMAN talking about Lou Albano, sharing stories about him, the history of managers in the Northeast, their role in the company, and how Lou revolutionized the industry. They also talk about the Shane McMahon deal and he reveals that in July of 2000, he was in talks to have Shane buy ECW and he would run it - but Vince nixed that feeling it would be smarter to let the company go under so they could buy the assets out of bankruptcy for less money. When ECW was relaunched in '06, the original idea for it was to not only be web-only as has been known since that time, but for it to be run as a separate company within WWE - ala WEC being owned by the same parent company as UFC, but run as its own entity, with Shane running it. Fascinating stuff, and easily the best Heyman interview I've ever heard. -

Supposedly BFG was HEAVILY papered - by most reports, they'd sold somewhere in the neighborhood of 900 tickets by Thursday, and I'll confirm myself TNA had people at the Irvine Spectrum and Block in Orange passing out free tickets over the weekend.

For another two weeks or so, Sporadic. HDNet goes to the premium tier on November 11th, so it's an extra $5/month if you want to keep it.

Yeah, I heard about that. I'll pay the extra $5 when the time comes. I love Ring Of Honor, HD concerts and the various MMA shows HDNet run and the other 4 channels will be a decent bonus.

This whole Jerry Lynn storyline is in pretty poor taste though.

Even though they made fun of it right after, I'm happy they're letting Kofi ditch the accent. He sounded much more confident not doing it.

That DiBiase/Orton segment was AMAZING. Myke I know you're watching MNF but look it up. DiBiase was fucking great. Showed more emotion than Cena or Orton combined!

That was Memphis 101 and it work beautifully.

No. That was a real stinger. They signed Lynn to a multi-year contract and he hasn't returned to live shows yet. They were doing a Jerry Lynn mentoring Tyler Black storyline that they had to drop.

No shit? I know sales were going slowly initially, but I assumed they picked up since the crowd was of a decent size. I don't regret the $70 I spent on my ticket whatsoever.

Yeah I was about to post about it before Trips lampshaded it.

I also, at th "technical difficulties"

Really? The whole Kenny King promo along with the Nigel's promo and "well, go to rohwrestling.com for more info on Jerry Lynn's condition" from the one announcer doing his best Owen voice impression made it feel extremely fake.

Change poor taste to extremely poor handling of the situation.

They're trying to get the young Kenny King over and really that was the only way they could sort that situation out and have someone come out with something of value. I know what you mean though. It was a little cold of them to cut a promo on a stinger but at the same time I can understand why they did it.

The opening segment with DX burying all of the young guys on Team SD, and then kinda burying Swagger was incredibly stupid. Sure, it fit their characters to bury them since it's what Hunter does, but they NEED TO MAKE STARS and this kind of thing is exactly why that doesn't happen as much as it should. This led to a good-ish, but 3 minute-long TEN MAN TAG. So why should people care about the seven on seven one on PPV when this went so little time? How is that an effective preview for a match that people should want to pay to see?

The only part of the intro I liked was Snoop running down every major match right at the beginning of the show - something that TNA should really do more often as it would reduce the amount of "THIS BIG MATCH THAT WE DIDN'T ANNOUNCE BEFORE IS HAPPENING NEXT! Then, Orton and DiBiase just ruled it. Orton came off like a prick forcing his supposed friend into fighting him, and then turning on him when he did it. DiBiase's facial expressions and body language were perfect - the man finally showed some passion and the crowd responded in kind by cheering for him like mad. Ted went from being another member of Legacy to a star here - hopefully they go somewhere with this and take advantage of it because he's on the cusp of really being a breakthrough star and having it work after this.

Then they had an awesome tribute for Captain Lou that featured just about everything one could ask from a tribute video - it covered every part of his career, from his wrestling days to being Mario and the whole Rock 'n Wrestling deal. This was perfect, and it led to the crowd chanting his name. Great segment here.

The Snoop segment was quite amusing, with Santino dressed up like Charlie Brown and Snoop making weed jokes, culminating in a funny for one second technical difficulties sign and then the punchline being that he wanted to light up some candles, not weed.

Cena-HHH was awesome. I enjoyed this more than their WM 22 match, although this didn't have the heat that the match had. Part of the enjoyment comes from Raw never really having matches of this length (about 20 minutes) on any kind of a regular basis, so this stood out, and was a great possible send-off for Cena. They really went all out with a PPV-level match here, kicking out of finishers that you rarely see kicked out of - including the Pedigree, which was kicked out of once, prior to that, Cena saved himself by putting his foot on the rope, and then he finally lost to the third one while HHH kicked out of the Attitude Adjustment and avoided tapping to the STF that put him out in WM 22. I liked that instead of letting HHH grab the rope, Cena tried to pull him back to the middle, but in doing so, HHH was able to avoid his grasp this time and make it to the ropes - nice risk/reward thing there. Definitely an excellent match and one that I'll definitely be rewatching at some point this week. Of course, like the AJ-Angle match, this one created a problem with the PPV having to follow this, and nothing on that card seemingly like it can actually do that.

Miz-Jannetty was a nice surprise, and Marty looked good yet again. Considering that four more years have passed since his excellent match with Angle, I was a bit surprised by that. But the guy still takes the best damn spinning bump for a clothesline in the business, and put Miz's offense over like a million bucks - something that Miz has needed after being buried for much of his time on this show. Snoop attacking Chavo was great - he threw a better spear here than Show did to Henry earlier, and the dance-off was amusing. It's impossible to not love Snoop in these things because he's just so charismatic that everything he does is at least funny in some way.

The Cena-Orton video package was fantastic - one of the best one they've done this year. The song playing was fantastic and I love how far back they went with the feud in it - all the way back to Orton getting the punt over as INSTADEATH by kicking Cena's father years ago. It's a shame that they didn't bring this stuff up before because it would have made the Iron Man match into a bigger deal before. Still, they did an excellent hype job in one night to try and make this seem like an all-time great rivalry - far better than they've done before.

Then after all of this great stuff, it was time for Jericho vs. Michaels - kind of an afterthought on this show given everything else that happened, so in a way, I'm glad it was just an excuse to have a mayhem, havoc-type situation break down with teams Raw and SD fighting each other. I also liked the MSW-ish deal with the brawl continuing past the show's time limit expiring. That's hard to pull off now - especially on a show with a regular overrun, but they did a good job here.

How come every time I turn on RAW, Hornswoggle is on the screen, doing something outrageously corny?

Actually Jay I thought the opening segment was hilarious. HHH did put down the Smackdown talent but did so in a way that genuinely funny. The "Hey what happened to your voice" segment with Kofi was bust a gut funny.

The thing with burying the talent is that the audience literally didn't know who Drew or Eric were. Hell I just flashed a blank trying to remember McIntyre's name. And I've never seen an Escobar match in my life. That and everyone else on the SD team is a heel since the major faces are involved in the 4-Way and on top of that, they were being dictated to by Vicky Guerrero which made the put downs earlier all the more appropriate.

Personally i thought that was the best RAW in years.

Burials by themselves are harmless. They buried Legacy prior to the match they lost to them.

Burials are harmful when they're followed through logically. When I bury you on tv and then squash you in the match, then it's harmed the product. Any other combination is effective save for the "my opponents are worthless and now I'm going to demonstrate that they're worthless."

Cena/HHH was good fun and impressive work. The post-STF pedigree was nonsense in terms of its placement in the match, but the whole match was excellent, and seeing Cena convey self-doubt was a great change from his mister merchandise and beat everyone ever persona. But then Orton had to posture and grimace at a tv screen with Cena's face on it that made for an unintentionally hilarious moment.

I missed most of the other stuff, as I'm sick and therefore coming and going in terms of conciousness. The Lou Albano video was, I agree, well done.

DiBiase/Orton was great. Orton's acting was perfect, DiBiase's emotion seemed legit. They should've turned him face.. he was massively over. I'm looking forward to seeing more of his work. He did a great job at furthering the angle and showing the burden his character was carrying.

I was really excited to see Jericho/HBK and was hoping that they'd give them at least 30 minutes. I was disappointed that they didn't, but I'm even more disappointed in myself for not realizing that they'd use it as an excuse to have both teams out there and let all hell break loose. I honestly thought there'd be a great match between the two. Sigh.

I don't know why I am always surprised that Michael Cole ruins everything. I think an act can't get any cornier, and then BAM: Michael Cole being a moron.

Rick, I thought the Kofi deal was fine - that's not a burial, but treating the lesser-known guys on SD's team as nobodies is a killer. They did the same thing to Mike Knox in '06 and it buried him even further down the card. They're new guys - it's hard enough for them to get over. They don't need main event-level acts knocking them to make it even harder - especially now when the company desperately needs new top-level acts to replace the existing ones who are broken down to various degrees. Batista's got maybe a few years left if he's really lucky. Taker's clearly unable to go more than 15 minutes now, while HBK can, but can't do it very often and is basically just a PPV-only guy at this point. Even Cena, who before was one of the most durable guys in the company, has become very injury prone because they keep bringing him back early from injuries.

They had to cause they started recently introducing him being from Ghana instead of Jamacia.

Like the average WWE fan knows the difference?

I understand what you mean but the company also has Dragon and Nigel coming in. And I have a feeling they both might just be coming to RAW if the company pulls the trigger and sends Cena to Smackdown - which others may scoff at but I feel is very much a potential reality. I mean what push comes to shove, the company can be very quick to elevate someone. Just look at how fast JBL went from APA to John Bradshaw Leyfield to World Champion. Or even CM Punk for that matter.

Right now guys like Dragon and Nigel can both get themselves over inside a ring in a way McIntyre and Escobar can't and really being able to get into a ring with HBK and HHH is probably a bigger rub than anything for those guys. I honestly can't expect someone the stature of HBK and HHH to say, "Hey Eric Escobar. This kid is from..." It would reek of on the nose exposition and ruin DX's credibility because the audience would see right through what DX was doing. Nobody would gain anything from it. The best example I can give you is that Vince put Drew over as a future World Champion and it literally did nothing for Drew.

The only way for these younger guys to get any kind of rub would be for them to get in the ring with DX and show that they can hang. Legacy did it and clearly the crowd reacted better to both Rhodes and DiBiase than almost ever before last night. I honestly expect McIntyre and Escobar to have their asses handed to them at the PPV and for the SD team to get ahead by cheating like bandits and causing team Raw to self-destruct leaving HBK/HHH to do all the work. And then DX wins.

Some people may hate that scenario but right now Drew McIntyre hasn't shown that he can draw heel heat inside the ring at all. Want to see how fast a crowd can sit on its hands? Watch a Drew McIntyre match. In a couple of years with a slow build these guys will be moved up the ranks like Rhodes, DiBiase, Punk, and even Jeff Hardy were (remember how long it took him to beat HHH).

And on a side note. Swagger looked like he loved being out there with DX. Kofi did too. Just saying in general.

Dude started with the company in 1994 or 1995. Bad, bad example.

Punk is a better example.

I meant the act of elevation itself and how quickly it can be done.

JBL went from APA member to winning the title in the span of something like under a year wasn't it? Regardless of how long he had been with the company, they took someone who was seen as low/mid-carder by most and turned around and made him World Champion in a very, very short time. Punk won the World, Intercontinental, and Tag Team belts belts in a span of like six months.

And I looked it up. Chris Jericho is the only guy in company history to hold the WWE, World Heavyweight, US, Intercontinental, European, Hardcore, WWE Tag Team, and World Tag Team belts. The only other people who can do this as well are RVD, Jeff Hardy, Christian, and Regal. RVD needs the World Heavyweight belt and Hardy needs the Tag belts.

Let's be honest with Punk: he also benefited from people's screwups (Wellness Policy violations and such). Not saying he didn't deserve it, but it certainly helped that he keeps himself clean and was in the right places at the right times to get a push.

Truth, sadly. Now that Batista and Rey Rey are back, we see what WWE truly thinks of him. As if it wasn't already telling through an under 10-minute "Montreal Screwjob" title retention and curtain jerker squash against the Undertaker. For as great as the Punk/Hardy feud was, we see the "comfort guys" return to the top of the card imediately, and Punk gets pushed aside.

Now, by Christmastime of this year, when Batista and Rey are back on the shelf with their torn whatever-it-is-this-time, then maybe Punk will rise again. He'll be feuding with the Inter-US champion (which one is on SD? IC?) this time next month.

Which of those has HBK never held? US/Hardcore?

I'm expecting Big Show to KO punch one of his own teammates so Jericho can get the pin to keep up their feud with DX and completely destroy the theme of the PPV.

The rumor is Triple H/HBK like Drew McIntyre and so he'll probably get something out of the match.

Mykevermin and niceguyshawne you'll are right cause majority the WWE Universe don't care about his origins. I just laugh cause he is eventually going to have a name change and there is no telling what they are going to call him then.

Let's not forget that JBL was also Justin "Hawk" Bradshaw and one half of the failed New Blackjacks team.

Bradshaw was a 17 time Hardcore champion. To put that in perspective, Shawn Stasiak is a 15 time Hardcore champion.

yep.. me too, this is crazy.. from lordsofpain.net

Former Ring of Honor Champion Nigel McGuinness is backstage at the TNA iMPACT! Zone in work tonight's tapings. No word yet on whether he's signed a new TNA contract.

There has also been some buzz that fellow former ROH Champion Bryan Danielson might be TNA-bound as well. ROH also sent out a statement last month that Danielson was WWE bound, but that appears to have fallen through. The early talk is that WWE dragged its feet on signing the duo, so TNA swooped in and signed Nigel. Danielson very well could be next.
