That's pretty much 100% the case. I, however, don't end up comparing them either. Nostalgia is such a huge, huge factor that people end up looking at things w/ rose-tinted glasses most of the time and they just don't realize.
XIII's story sucks; it's incohesive and ultimately self-defeating. The characters aren't exactly multi-faceted, lack of a "complete" feel, blah blah...
VII's story made even less sense, no thanks to the HORRIBLE localization. There was no customization in characters at all, aside from Limit Breaks everyone was the same, which is NOT good game design. Using a character because you like the guy may be fun and all, but it's a flaw if they're all interchangeable. Pretty much every FF has this issue though...
Materia sucks. Classes suck. GFs suck, Junction sucks, Sphere Grid sucks... so many complaints. It's unbelievable.
All of them have huge negatives, but in the end I've enjoyed each and every one of them. I've played them when they came out, and honestly yes, FFXIII is my favorite RPG of this generation. That's usually the case with most entries. Whining about pointless things aside, this game is far and beyond anything else that's come out of Japan.
EDIT: Delta is COM/RAV/MED which... is pointless for most battles. A constant medic is usually a waste/inefficient.
The lake thing is after Vanille's Eidolon sequence. After you ride the thing out of the cave, wait by the waterfall... and enter the other cave. The one where you might have saw Bismarck swimming around.
Hey now, those are some harsh comments. I thought FFXIII's story was really well done =D
It was a really cool concept. It was fast paced so it didn't have a chance to sit down and explain everything to you, but it still was pretty compelling.
And as others have said, the setting was amazing.
