Gears of War 3 - Release Date Sept. 20
WTF, i was idle boosting and got into a game on overpass. Well it kept getting stale mated. I wasnt watching em, but i turn the game back on to see what was going on and it was 4 vs 1, me as the last one out. Time ended and it said stale mate. How the hell is it a stale mate when its 4 vs 1? Unless it does that with the new man up rules? Guess i better change it back to 2 minutes a round.
i've noticed if time is running out and you didn't kill everyone for a win it'll stalemate even if you're in the lead. might be EPIC trying to make idle boosting take longer than usual.
So guys..

I have played and enjoyed all three Gears in the campaign (the first one several times) in solo and coop. I have never really played the MP though, and not much of any shooters online before.

I am considering giving Gears 3 a shot though to see if I can get into it. I don't know dick about the modes, what they do and what type of player to be. I assume I will learn all of that as I play, but in the meantime, can anyone recommend me a good place to start? Does the game match up players by skill or experience, so I won't be fed to experienced vets to be slaughtered?

Or am I so late in joining that I won't really encounter other noobs and likely just be better suited staying on the sidelines? I don't mind taking a whipping, but I want to have fun too. I value my time and have plenty of games to play, so if it's not a good fit at this point, I don't mind moving on.

Anyone with any thoughts, it would be appreciated.
I have posted this before but your post reminds me that I really should make a blog about my first time.

I got a 360 with Gears 2 during BF 2008 but didn't get a chance to play/setup until classes were over. After campaign I tried playing MP - that was a huge mistake. I stuck with horde for almost a month and a half then transitioned into MP. I've been through Gear's 2 entire MP growth for the most part and believe I am better than the average player even with my shit connection. Gears 3 is a bit "easier" and the connection problems aren't as bad, although I have encountered more "noobs" and non US players for over a month (and worse connection).

I'd say play mainly horde with some koth mixed in (most people don't even play to win).

I hate playing KOTH just because you never know where they are going to spawn. If you play TDM there are only 2 areas where they will spawn, and usually the lady will say enemy forces if those spawns switch.

good mornin CAG! I was playing this morning some VS KOTH early so I had all bots. I was so happy when I saw KIM he was so close I could taste him! Then I remembered that I'm COG and he's on my team! SH!T still not close to the Forshawdowing ACH. anyone get any thing done this weekend?

hardly anyone plays objective based matches w/the intent on progressing the objective...it's all about how many kills can I get while my teammates try and progress the objective.

funny, I finally got the "I died the most" (hard night?...i forget and care not for the name of the ribbon). haha...I guess I can't complain because I need it for the achievement at some point.

It happens! It was not a great weekend for GOW. couldn't really play like I wanted couldn't find matches and couldn't find folks to really play with!

@100xp sorry didn't get you message about horde till about 30 min later. bc I have my notice turned off bc it bugs me when I'm watching a movie with subs. anyway. next time just jump in man!

there was no (Y) option to join otherwise I'd be dropping the hammer on dem hordes.

pretty decent random horde group on thrashball, once I unlocked the SB 2 guys were repairing and feeding me cash every so often. we go to wave 28 before the host dropped out...not sure why, we were doing very well. That was 50k well sent on SB investment. Still so far from unlocking rockets but it seems more attainable now than when I hadn't maxed out any of the other fortifications prior.

beast on sandbar, as the bomber is boss. run up to the top of the cliff and hail mary the cog. not sure as to why the other randoms didn't adopt what I was doing but...can I complain? I got heavy at wave 6, and walked out top earner was $22k. Everyone else finished around $6 each and the lvl 99 was slightly higher. I hope down the road they add more stuff for Beast, maybe therons w/torque bows and limited ammo or even a reaver.

...actually I'd pay premium dlc price for a lambent beast mode vs. COG and vs. Locust. There may not be enough variety of lambent but i'm sure they could come up with a similar game type.

I had a weird weekend too. One Horde where we were doing VERY good but my moden shat the bed on wave 38 or something like that. By the time I got back on about 8 minutes later, the entire team was offline. I sent an apology to everyone... I finally got the turret upgrade for level two so it actually shoots what you're aiming at and not something five feet to the left. At that point, I was just an animal on that thing. Double if not triple the score of everyone else. I had so much spare cash that I built the SB and just left it for them.

After that though, never got passed wave 25 because people would drop all the time.

I think I've hit a bit of a burnout point though. I need to take a couple of weeks off because the game is just starting to irritate me. Maybe if I had some good people willing to stick it out for the full 50 rounds I'd be willing to go, but as of right now I'm jsut sick of randoms coming in, building the first base, doing the command center thing (is that DLC only? I never see the option to build one) and then leaving. Gets old after awhile.

I think ppl that build a base then drop just want the Founder ribbon, and are too lazy to do it w/a 2nd controller. I've had randoms rush for the base and when they didn't get it because I got there first, drop immediately...loser. honestly I never expect to go the distance in random horde, I'm lucky if we make it to wave 18 before there's only 2 ppl left.

once due to host migration I ended up being the only one left in a horde match...so I stayed until my SB was destoryed. lots of points..haha.

Wow i guess the blue 18 i seen last night was 3rd re-up, because i just played with a red 73 and he said he was 2nd re-up. I also asked him how he leveled up so fast and he said insane horde. I think i said it a few times already, if anyone wants to play insane horde, let me know. Im down for that. I only have 96 more waves of horde for that onyx medal. Though i still need about 800,000 for the horde money onyx medal. :/

edit 49 more waves and about 720,000 to go.

I'm always down for insane Horde, while I got the rocket kills I still have yet to unlock the rocket upgrade. there's also about 3 more horde ribbons I have yet to get as well...though I never seem to have a retro lancer when formers spawn. Plus maybe we can coordinate and have ppl pick up 3 wpn I spot, etc. I think the other one is the headsnake ribbon.

Played campaign on insane last night w/DJ. Dood...those two random @$$clowns I think are brothers or roommates (they have similar friends and almost the exact same library of games), the guys that did nothing but run around and get killed. At the end of the chapter it was me 34 kills, DJ 27 kills, assclown 4 kills/7 deaths, assclown2 0 kills/9 deaths. I think I would have preferred going to the DMV then carrying those 2 again. Act 1 shouldnt be that difficult. I wish I could go into their HDD and delete the insane progress we gave them.

you need to get turrets to lvl 8 ($360,000 invested) to unlock the option for the command center.

You can do the former one in campaign, headsnake in campaign. The horde weapon pick up can be done by picking up the same weapon you dropped. So if you target a hammerburst, i pick it up dropping my lancer, then you can target the lancer, and i can pick that up, and so on.

Im down for insane horde!

well then...it seems I'm ready for insane horde.
Insane Horde with no mutates, right? Otherwise you'd nullify the XP bonus. That sounds pretty tough. :)
you figure Super Reload, Vampire, and No Ammo Pick ups.

honestly, for the most bang for your buck XPwise, you don't go the full 50 waves, you do 1-20 then go back to again. This way you're not dying a lot and spending more time in ghost cam mode. Of course this is purely for an efficent way to grind out horde medals with relative ease and still get decent xp in the process.

geeze...ironically that's the other ribbon i need. I wonder how much XP you get if I leave this on while I'm at work. I dont have speakers on my cpu here, does it say there's a time window you have to beat the wave by? I thought I saw something there for a split second.

Well, the issue is you have to click the left stick constantly to spot (unless you can spot it). As long as you don't create the Spawn Point, it stays at 30 seconds.

Thats crazy! Im not a fan of getting xp like that but its a good way to get the ribbon. Im almost 100 (93) but at least I can say I got there the legit way, and while having fun.

thanks for the info. at least I can get the ribbon I don't have yet. I don't think I have the patience to thumbstick my way to re-up though.

lately ive been doing the act 2 chapter 2 reload checkpoint trick. But that takes about 2 hours to get 2 medals, and 4 hours for a 3rd, but 5 medals overall. This trick seems faster, i might give it a go.

Yeah, those guys were something else. I had to mute the one guy because he had such terrible feedback on his mic. And I noticed them pouting when they didn't get the silverbacks for the lambent Leviathan fight, the one guy was shooting at you because you "stole" his silverback I guess. Eventually, those guys dropped out when we were having trouble with that fight on the bridge where you zip-line in. And then we beat it on the first or second try without them, of course! Now I've got Act 1 completely done in both Insane and in 4-player. I've got most of Acts 2 and 3 also done, except for the couple chapters that glitched on me when my xbox froze on Sunday. Act 4 is done in 4-player, but not insane, and I still need to do all of Act 5 in both modes, except we knocked out the final queen fight on insane (thankfully, with very few palace guards!). Good times.

if only i could use a rapid fire controller to press LS over and over. LOL At least i can brows the internet while pressing it over and over.

I dont really get why he shows to turn on vampire and must reload, its not like making it harder gives you better ribbon xp, right?

How long did that take you King Broly?

in 20 minutes i got about 31,000 xp. Not bad considering a team death match can get ya maybe 3-4k in 8-10 minutes.

If you do the first wave then you cant do it over and over because wave 2 will start soon after. Better unlock friendly fire.

yeah i just realized that, due to the base timer. hopefully i'll get 4 coop done before EPIC patches this. I'm not that hard up for re upping but I'd at least like to get the unlocks for the level progression.

i'll be playing a lot of campaign tonight. i think I need 2 acts + a few chapters worth of 4 coop.

Too bad my MadCatz controller doesn't have an L3 function :/ I would totally leave this on overnight and get that second re-up achievement. Still a nice method though.

Does any Turbo Controller have it?

What I did, for my TE at least, was leave a Wii Remote on top of the X-button (I do this for Idle boosting as well, but with the A button).

In my 66 minutes of trying it, I went up 4 levels and got 85,000 XP. It's a solid method, which is roughly 1,000 XP every 40 seconds or so.

I was reading the thread over at x360a and people are using the Hori Pad EX 2 and the TurboFire. They both have a programmable turbo function and all you need to do is put something heavy on top of it to keep it pressed.

Definitely not going to buy another controller just for this though, lol. While it would come in handy for other idle boosting, my Fightpad works well enough. It can turbo function all buttons EXCEPT the LS/RS press :/

*EDIT* Amazon and Gamestop are both sold out of the Hori EX 2 haha. I wonder why? :p

i made a mistake of turning my tv to my pc, and pressing the LS for 20 minutes. Then i go back and 2nd player wasnt switching weapons and my ghost cam pointer was looking a little off. So i ended it and winded up with 2 ribbons LOL. Guess i should watch it more often. The first two times i went to my pc and came back and it was fine. oh well.

yeah not going to buy a controller just to boost. LOL. Taking the battery pack out works just as good. Just have to keep pressing in LS.

Im up to level 82 right now. Might boost some more tonight, but im close to onyxing my horde medal for waves, so i might do that first.

Yeah, the positioning has to be just right or the gun some times flings off the screen and you're left not spotting anything. I only did it for about 5 minutes to test it out and got like 6000 EXP. It definitely is really fast but I get bored extremely easily. I also cherish my thumb, haha.

This method must have been around for a while by the looks of it. I'm guessing that's how most guys were re-upping so quickly. The big money method was a LOT faster and I actually sat there for 5 hours doing it. I can't see myself mashing my left stick for 5 hours though >_
damnit...I forgot about the mute button.
That's why I paused briefly after those guys joined. Went into the menu to mute him.

I need to finish about 8 or 9 scattered chapters in 4-player co-op to unlock friendly fire. I think I need all of Act 5, plus a couple random chapters in Acts 2 and 3.

wow did they fix it already, or am i having bad luck? Every time i unplug my controller to keep him swapping guns, he stops picking them up, and the button prompt stops showing up. But if i hold X in its usually fine. The first few times i did this i never had a problem. Now all of a sudden he stops picking the gun up, when its right by him. hmmmm. Id like to think im just having bad luck. LOL

I'm going to have an aneurysm before I can get the 4 player coop acheesement. Only one fucking chapter I need to get it and ill have it. fucking one minute before the end of the chapter, some fuckhead leaves leaving only 3 and ending it without counting. DIE. fuckER. DIE.

got to level 85 today. Thats 5 levels in one day. I believe i got about 14,000 xp per 10 minutes doing the spotting trick. About 30,000 in 20 minutes. So thats really good. These last 15 levels are still going to take some time to get done. I need to get 72,500 to get to level 86, so thats like 50 minutes worth of spotting. Then it just gets longer after that. :/

pretty much the same, I'm down for some campaign tonight if you're up for it as well. I managed to iron out some insane chapters last night a a few 4-player w/randoms. I think the new thing is ppl idle boosting arcade campaign on casual. They just load up an early chatper and sit there hoping randoms pop in a do the chapters for them.
100xp I should be on tonight hit me if you need spot filled for the 4co-op
awesomesauce. (i need that medal too)

maybe you should get in on the 3 player coop tonight making it 4...though I hope you stick around for at least 1 full Act. Which chapter did you need? Most of us need the earlier chapters and spot chapters here and there towards the end.

If you guys are really wanting to get the 4 player Co-Op done, you can always do what me and my friend did. We both just signed in a guest account each and did it that way.. We did it on Insane but it was pretty damn hard. We did all of the chapters on Insane except the last one. We ended up changing it to Casual cause the last boss is just crazy.

It's a lot easier IMO than trying to get four people together at a designated time/working with randoms. Whether you have the persistence for Insane with two null players, well, that's a different story lol. I raged quite a bit but we got it done.

honestly at this point, casual 4player coop is fine. I just want to get it done so I can get the achievement and the unlock. I have 3 controllers, I'd pefer my xbox not look like a power strip though.
