Gears of War 3 - Release Date Sept. 20

Personally, I can't really tell if I'll like a map or not just by seeing videos, I have to experience it a few times before I can give an opinion. However, from the beta maps I liked all of them except Checkout. Can't really explain it, but I hated that map. Thrashball was one of my favorites, although a team could seal itself in the concession stands and it'd be hard to get them out once they're in, especially if you're playing with a bunch of scrubs. Old town was good, pretty well balanced. Trenches was ok, nothing too bad about it, but nothing all that amazing either.

It's good enough for me when the average player isn't much better than a bot in Gears. Just more aggressive. The damage, spread and recoil whilst ADS hasn't changed. Because of that I don't have to waste time weighting out new pros and cons so I'm all set. It's the maps and learning how to detach myself from lost causes so I can remain positive in bad games that I'm worried about. I've just started developing the latter mindset in DS2 mp and my stats have skyrocketed since then.

Ill be sadly disappointed once again if Epic makes the beta unlocks available for everyone. I mean they said the ONLY way to get those were via the beta. Then again there are probably more people that didnt get those beta unlocks compared to those who did, so which side would epic want to piss off the least... probably the bigger group of those who didnt play the beta.

Kill stealing.... generally i will back off if a teammate downs someone, or i will hump/twirl smokes/shoot pistol in air at the enemy till the guy who downed him comes and finishes him off. The only time id steal kills really in Gears 2 was to finish the leader off in Guardian if i thought there was a chance for them to be revived. What i hate is in the heat of the moment battles where you accidentally steal a kill when it wasnt your intention, and it happened so fast you couldnt stop it, yet some dude will yell over xbox how i stole his kill and tried to do it on purpose.

I worry about the update to Thrashball arena map. In a video i seen they made new paths that go left and right of the oringinal spawn tunnel. Well the ones that go towards the consession stand/stairs, they actually raise up so mid way through the tunnel you can shoot over the barrier. This just gives another vantage point for people to shoot those in the middle of the field really easy. I swear it doesnt matter where you take cover on the field there will be someone that has an angle on you to shoot you.

Exactly what I was hinting at when I mentioned Thrashball. Warzoners are going to have a field day camping there and whatever opposition they can't see they'll definitely hear coming when they spawn behind them. TDM & KOTH with randoms is going to hurt more than it did before the changes.

If a team can hold down the new pathways they automatically have a clear shot at any stragglers booking it through the normal exit. If you're trying to cap/break/defend and a guy is already posted up there all it takes is a teammate of his to rush in or crossfire for a minimal effort kill. I guess the first thing I'm doing in those matches is heading straight for grenades because I won't receive proper backup alone and can't watch three different spawns at once.

We'll see on launch what the real deal is, but I'm prepared for the worst. Seems like they may have traded in one evil for another by severely underestimating the community... again.

I enjoyed thrashball how it was originally, except for when I joined games where I was on the scrub team and I'm getting trapped as soon as I join.

I was not a fan of Trenches at all but I'm interested to see how the changes alter the flow of the map, I don't think they can make that map any worse than how it was originally.

Just like Gears 2, I'm sure there will be maps that everyone plays (Blood Drive) and maps that NOBODY plays (Hail). I'm not too worried about it.

I'm sort of astounded at the love for Blood Drive.

I disliked it more than I liked it.

Every game just came down to a campfest/man hunt, is he hiding in the spawn or is he hiding in the room with the grenades?

Hail was bad, but it wasn't anywhere near Stasis. God that map was awful. Hail's downfall was in its gimmick.

I fucking hate gimmick maps. Getting smokes thrown at you in Gears 2 while capping the hill behind the lasers and it just blowing you right into it. Gimmicks aren't needed. A good map is a good map.
For those claiming KMart is doing a MSRP Gears 3 + $20 gaming card + 50% off a year of Live + Gears Triple Pack deal, I cannot find any evidence that the Triple Pack is involved in the deal at all. Can anyone find evidence of that? Best I could find was http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=295648 which says you get a $20 gaming card and half off Live with purchase...
The Triple Pack is for the Console only.

What do you mean, it's for the console only? Only for the XBox 360?
What do you mean, it's for the console only? Only for the XBox 360?
He means you only get the free triple pack when you buy the Gears 3 LE console, not when you buy just the game.

registered for team (brotherhood) CAG. there's only 2 gt's I recognize playing gears with. I know there's some CAGs that haven't signed up that play Gears.

Ahhhhh thanks Prison Mike. Wish I could afford the LE console, but thanks for clearing it up. Looks like I will still be picking it via Amazon.

I was at Toys R Us earlier and they showed me the Epic Edition and Limited Editions since they already had them in the back. The Limited Edition packaging is much better looking then the previous 2 LEs. I do wish they would have used a plastic slipcase instead of the cardboard one though as the copy he showed me was already damaged right out of the box. They said they only had 5 of the LEs in stock so hopefully Best Buy does not get shorted on LEs like what happened with the Marvel vs Capcom 3 Limited Editions.
11 spots left on the 360voice team.
I hope we all try our damn hardest to get 1000G first. I love competition :D

Yeah I am still going to go the Amazon route. Love me my Savage Kantus!

Prison Mike and Smacked-In-the-Face-Squidward are right - unless you're going the "LE Console" route, just get it from Le Amazon, you'll get $20 off Skyrim, or ME3, or BF3, or AA2, or etc...It's a delicous cycle. UNLESSSSS you want it ASAP from KMart, in which case you'll get a $20 Gaming coupon (like Amazon), 50% off 12+ months of live (unlike Amazon), and you don't have to wait for the fuck postman, just the (hopefully) local store to open...

Get the Standard Edition, it's bad enough Epic will profit from disc-locked content and other bs.

I concur

Reviews are coming in and they are extremely positive. I guess I'm glad the extra time Epic, they used to polish this up, really payed of and they were able to deliver a 10+ hour experience. My friend is getting it and we'll be going through it in split-screen co-op.

From the destructoid review:

In some ways, this is a good thing, but it also means that old problems return. For a start, the idea of cover-based warfare is still an illusion, as Gears 3 is -- like its predecessors -- a game in which players roll toward each other, fire shotguns, and let luck determine who explodes first. In fact, rather than fix this element, Epic has seen fit to actively encourage it by including a brand-new shotgun of the sawn-off variety. This one-shot firearm is incredibly powerful at close range, giving shotty fans even more reason to reduce the entire game into a roly-poly simulator. I'm not a fan of shotguns in any game, myself, but even I found myself having to resort to the same roll-and-shoot tactics, as it's still the best way to get anything done.

There are ways to mitigate this problem, of course. All the old modes are back, and the classic capture-point gametype makes for more varied and less predictable play. The new Retro Lancer -- which has a conventional bayonet and lets you run-and-stab anything in the way -- is also an interesting countermeasure. In any of the straight deathmatch modes, however, the shotgun is still king, and it's an issue that has most certainly turned me off of the competitive side of Gears. I fully recognize that, to some people, this sounds like Heaven. Those people are horrible human beings, but they definitely have a great experience lined up.

Sigh. That's not encouraging. I hope he's wrong.

Monster is running a contest for SE and consoles. I can't believe I missed it. Take care not to give them your real e-mail address if you're worried about spam because the rules state they'll use it to forward promotions.

Also the Metacritic score for the game is a 92. Pretty awesome. Oh, and this thread confirms the existence of more character variants so we may be in store for more unlockable love/DLC dicking.

LOL @ that Destructoid snippet. Commenting anymore those complaints would be a waste of time.

That dude sounds like a whiny bitch. I wonder if he complains about killstreaks in cod encouraging camping. Or any other issue like that. If you can't counter the shotgun you probably suck.

Here's to hoping those are hidden unlockable characters.

I saw something in that video that I can't believe Epic hasn't fixed though. You still can't roll off a platform onto something lower. It's always glitchy/spotty. You have to like, walk up and hop down. Hopefully it's at least improved.

That used to screw me up a lot on Checkout, where the flame grenades spawn. You try to roll off and get stuck like a sitting duck.

So far all the reviews have been damn near perfect. Though i havent really read much of any, trying to stay away from any kind of details. I CANT WAIT FOR THIS GAME!

So I guess the ramp addition to grenade spawn in Checkout I've been hearing about was a lazy ass quick fix to one map? Ugh... whatever. I'll deal with it.

A friendly warning for those of you who are delving straight into Horde be aware there have been reports of a substantial amount of campaign spoilers in it. Tread carefully.

Not sure. I've seen so many fake spoiler titles on YouTube I automatically roll my eyes at the mere mention of the word now. We won't know the truth until next week. Epic keeping their word on the last Carmine brother living through the campaign is the only tid bit I care about. For as much as I love this franchise I've never been attached to a single character in this game except maybe Cole because he's a hilarious bad ass, but if he died I wouldn't care that much. Same with the Carmines though after two games I feel they deserve the opportunity of being something more than comic relief. Dom and Baird I wouldn't shed a tear over and Marcus is way too bland of a protagonist IMO to fret over his death.

I've been fortunate enough not to run into any video evidence to substantiate their claims. Judging from the achievement list though I would bet good money on
Dom
being the one who bites it. Whoever it is I hope Epic made it as heart wrenching as humanly possible. I want them to go out in a blaze of glory urging me to care about an otherwise boring or annoying character.

I stopped reading at "I'm not a fan of shotguns in any game."

I didn't read the whole review, just the spoiler excerpt, obviously his bias is weighing heavily on his view of the game or at least multiplayer, fans of the franchise have never had a problem with what he was saying and those that did no longer play it. He needs to stfu.

Since you said it I'm pretty sure it is. Some asshole had RIP _______ as his motto

God damn reading all these reviews is getting me even more pumped for the game. I just preordered for instore pickup at Best Buy as a backup in case my Amazon package doesn't arrive on the 20th. :p

I fall somewhere in the middle. I love Gears multiplayer for the matches that DON'T devolve into rolly-polly shotgun races. But when they do, it isn't fun.

Protip: Rolling in full speed ahead with a Gnasher or Sawed-off vs. a Gnasher, Sawed-off, Lancer, Retro will guarantee your death in non-host/laggy situations. Rolling period into a shotgun blast is a free one shot. It's been that way since the first Gears. Rolling into the saw vacuum is a free death. Again... nothing new. The fact that the Retro's damage, spread and recoil when hard aiming hasn't changed... well... if you can't down a guy running (running not wall bouncing or flanking - there is a difference) in a straight line toward you with that gun then God himself can't even help you. The Sawed-off is self explanatory; stop running straight into its kill radius dumb ass.

Shit... even a fast trigger finger with an active Hammerburst could deal with you. We haven't even gotten into power weapons yet nearly all of which are ranged. Oh, and then there's grenades. The possibilities are nearly endless. The Sawed-off complaint was especially moronic given the fact it now has a light you cannot miss on its barrel immediately differentiating it from all other weapons.

Bad reviewer is bad. LRN2PAYATTENTION - LRNTEHGAMEMECHANICS - LRN2STFU.

Ugh... I really shouldn't be beating this dead horse. The curse of a big mouth indeed. I'm just going to main shotties for the first couple of games, troll hard and enjoy the solid weapon balance while I still can before Epic caves in on the legion of casuals drenched in that new car smell. Just wish they would remember no one is forcing you to play or continue sucking at Gears of War MP.

There's no doubt that all reviewers suck dick at games, but he has a point. The game does devolve into a shotgun fest. Dedicated servers will help, but assholes who whip out the gnasher straight from the start of the game and just run for you over and over again isn't fun when it's the only way people play.

The point he has is a fairly moot one centered around community behavior more than a certain type of weapon and that is where need people like him need to quit faking the funk and wake up. It isn't fun when the CoD community spends most of their time camping in randoms spots in MP either, but 90% of complainers in this game adhere to the same exaggerated flawed view of how shotgun rushing cannot be consistently countered in this game and it simply isn't true. It is not the only way to play this game and you don't have to put up with it. It is NOT a low risk/high reward tactic nor does following said guidelines guarantee a skill less profit in non-laggy games. Both the lag and questionable net code had a lot to do with the way people got away with Gnasher dominating in the past two games. You of all people know this Trakan because I've seen your k/d. You're a skilled player so how you cannot support a situation where people are legitimately being out played is beyond me.

Because of that I have no sympathy for stubborn complainers who refuse to use the tools provided to counter said play style. Just as you wouldn't if I trolled in the MW3 thread bitching about how camping is ruining the Call franchise as we know it. A franchise I'll admit (unlike so many whiners) I'm not terribly skilled at playing. The playing field has even out substantially for new players in this Gears so I refuse to apologize for berating single minded players who'd rather ruin a good game than learn how to play it.
