I just bought a DS Lite from Target! Update!

I will be shocked, SHOCKED, if there are Lites on display at Wal-Mart tomorrow. To have Wal-Marts break street date en masse could be very interesting....I may just have to stop before heading to work.

If this happens, I might as well try to get my money back on my pre-order and go to Walmart to get a DS lite. Not fair that I pre-orders and others get it way early :D

Sadly, I start work at 2AM - just going to bed now.

But you can bet I'll be checking this thread from the office, and if the answer actually is "Yup, they're out, they're on the shelves!"... I'll be finding a way outta there early. ;)

My brother was at the Target in Hicksville, NY today and was asking about the Lite. The kid working there told him that Nintendo had fined them $1,000 for each of the 15 DS Lites they had sold early, for a total fine of $15,000! Anyone else hear about any reports of fines?

$1000 for something they probably only make $5 profit on? Not a chance. I'd have to guess the guy was BS'ing you because if its true then its the first time in history any major retailer was fined for breaking street date EVER.

Bay area CAG's:
The DCPI number trick worked for me at this target:

Target Stores: Store Information
2155 Morrill Ave
San Jose, CA 95132

I had tried two targets earlier, the one on Coleman and the one on Capitol, and then headed up the 680 to this store. There is now only one DS Lite left in storage there. I asked a woman stocking shoes if she could check the stock of number 207 01 0007, she took me over to the person at a computer near the changing rooms, saying something about how there was a security notice on that item number in her little LRT device. I was sweating bullets, and told to go wait at guest services for someone to bring it out. The returns lady was busy with a long line, so when a guy walked out with it, I thanked him, and walked straight to an empty checkout lane at the front of the store. In and out in under 10 minutes. (and the security notice was only because it was in a locked-up area in back b/c of it being electronic or something). I stopped at the gamestop where I had reserved a DS Lite on my way home, walked into the store with it still in the target bag, and got the deposit refunded without any grief.

Here are some general tips I picked up along the way:

MOST IMPORTANT: You'll have success pulling this off in Targets where the electronics section is NOT located near the storeroom doors; two non-electronics employees I asked at the first store just told me to go ask the guys IN electronics, as they were right next to the back room. Ideally, you want women's clothing to be close to the storage rooms, and yes, pick an older woman as your mark, but she MUST have one of those LRT (big electronic price reading guns) in her hand.

Tell your mark that you called ahead, was told they're in stock, but saw only empty shelves, and that the only person in electronics was busy w/ another customer. I pretended that my girlfriend needed me to pick this up for her brother's birthday (any dumb story will work, but it did help to throw in that she used to work at target, explaining why you knew what a dcpi number is. Employees prefer having these for item lookup, so they'll be understanding and greatful in the process.) Act as though you are in a slight hurry, this again helps with the reasonableness of bothering a non-electronics employee.

Good luck everyone, and thanks to all who posted earlier; I couldn't have done this without you.
My guess would be just another flub, primarily (as I think somebody might have mentioned before in the thread) because of the ads.

The ads have already been printed for Walmart and Target that'll go out this week telling everybody to show up on the 11th and get their kid a DS Lite. They have a lot more pissed off people to deal with if they sell out before the 11th and don't get more in than they do by turning us away until the 11th.

That said, of course, if they DO start selling 'em tomorrow, hey, I'll be there. ;)
well according to this thread: http://cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=96172

Target doesn't have the lite advertised for next week either...

That Kid read that shit on "the internet".
I haven't been to that Starbucks in a long time. Cutting back on the unnecessary purchases, sugar, fat, and caffeine.

I live within a mile of that Target.

You might be too late.

EDIT: Actually, I just remembered that in my phone call to Target, the guy said they had around twelve in the back. The Lite that eddieness grabbed might have been the last one on display, but they could still have more in stock.

You live close enough to go by and ask, but you might need to pull off the original DCPI trick again to get some out of the stock room.
Well I already got mine, at the target in Florence, KY. So I'm not worried but now my wife wants one two so we had to preorder it at GameCrazy on Tylersville next Meijer. She doesn't seem to mind the wait, plus we get 12 Free Rentals.

EDIT: BTW I live off of Hamilton-Mason, in Knollwood Crossing Apartments

Just thought I'd post a few pictures. As for the people who are having trouble using the product number at Target, go in the morning (no later than 10am). It seems like all the smart-ass workers seem to arrive after that time. I also noticed that there appeared to be no specific person manning the electronics desk at that time (a lady from the nearby book section helped me).

As for the PSP/DS Lite comparison shots; damn close. The DS Lite actually has the slight edge when the PSP is not connected to the charger but they're just about equal when the PSP is charging.

lmfao.

i got mine today. It's so beautiful, i also got the last one at the store ^_^

it's so pretty....i'm gonna sleep with it in my arms tonight =]

tried that same target just before close tonight. tried a few different employees, even the ones with price guns, they all just told me to wait at the electronics dept for an available electronics rep. maybe they got wise after you managed yours?

NoVA CAGs - the Skyline Target on Rt7 had tons. They said they had plenty and I didn't ask how many, but they sold us 4. And before anyone flames - none of those is destined for eBay.

EDIT: I used the DCPI, asked for a white gameboy, and found one helpful non-electronics guy. The rest were clueless.

Got one for me and one for a friend today at Target in Tucson, Arizona.

This was at the Target east of Swan, on Broadway. Used the DCPI trick. :)

tried the code trick at a different target, i was SOOOOOOOOOOO close to getting one, but he walked in the back and came out after 10 mins, said the box had a note on it to not sell before sunday :bomb:

My story. Thanks for the DCPI trick guys!

(Also, intelli78! Hi! Nice to see a fellow Tucsonian on here.)

Target #1 (Grant Rd.). I check the display case and of course, nothing there. So I try to find a clueless girl in another department.. and there's a girl working in like rubbermaid containers or something.. score. I have the inventory code memorized so I ask her if she can look up the stock of it. She says it says they're in stock and on the shelves. I tell her they're not there. Yet she of course doesn't believe me so she wants to go look anyway. Of course they're not there, so I hint several times that maybe their in the back room, yet she keeps insisting the computer says there is none there. I finally give up on her after she just stares blankly ahead, not doing anything, for about ten seconds.

So after a few more errands, I'm on my way back home, hit the last Target near my place (Old Spanish Trail). There are no DS in the case as expected. However, there is a Target guy milling around right in front of electronics, along with some other knowledgeable-looking Target guys going back and forth.. setting up a vicious zone defense. I am certain they know the story of the DS lite, and I have doubts that I should even continue. Just then I happen upon one of those UPC code scanners and punch in the code and it says they're in stock in the stockroom and not on the aisle! Exactly what I was looking for. So I figure now I at least have to try. I turn away from the scanner when what do I see, but a nice Target lady looking like she just came from the stock room with some items for other customers. Perfect! Her tag says her name is Maria. I ask her if she check on the item. After some hesitation and looking towards the knowledgeable-looking Target guys (nooo), she actually calls the back room! Phase one complete! The stock room guy answers, and I figure he's *got* to know whats up. Regardless, I plod ahead. After screwing up the item code like 5 times, the guy finally keys it in right and says they have them in the electronics stock room and to meet him over there! Awesome! In the meantime, Maria is asking me "Do you have a photographic memory?" to which I laugh off saying I remember numbers easily such as my high school friend's phone number. Up to this point I had tried to be generic as possible, referring to the item only as a Nintendo, as to not to raise suspicion. However, she asked if it was a game, so I finally let loose that it was Nintendo DS. We start walking over to electronics, and she's like "Oh! I thought those were out of stock!" I'm like.. "Shiiiiiiit." Bad goes to worse as she walks up to the guy milling about in front of electronics and starts talking to him about it. On the outside, I'm trying to play it cool, acting dumb, but on the inside I'm freaking out going "CRAP CRAP CRAP CRAP CRAP." As she's talking to this guy, he gets this look about him like he's trying to remember something.... almost as if he's read something about the DS.. like they're not supposed to sell it until June 11th.. and he just can't quite remember. That look scares the shit out of me, since I figure he'll remember any second. The stock guy comes up at that point, and he looks like he knows what he's doing, which dims the hope some, but he at least drags us over to the electronics stock room away from the other guy. The stock guy and Maria go into the stock room, as I idly look at DVD's next to the door. I had originally agreed to pick up two for friends at work, Matt and Jason, if I managed to find any, but at this point, I'm thinking she'll only be coming back with one and I'll be lucky to get away with that one by the skin of my teeth. I hear an "Oh crap" from the door, of which I immediately think "Aw fuck, they saw the "do not sell to June 11th" sign on the box." Yet, they do not come out immediately. Then a minute late, Maria emerges carrying 4 DS lites! My eyes light up and internally I go "WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!!!!!!!" She hands me one and starts to head to the case with the other three. I meekly ask if I can have another two that I was getting for my friends, and she obliges. At this point, I'm like "WOOT!! HOME FREE!! Now time to GTFO!" Yet again I try and play it cool, so I decide I need to mask the DS lites in case anyone is on the up-n-up and sees them. I pause in a DVD aisle for a minute, pick up Full Metal Jacket to cover the DS lites with and am about to briskly walk to the register... when I hear a "Sir! Sir!" Maria is calling me. I think "AHHHHH fuck ! I SHOULD HAVE BOOKED IT! I WAS SO CLOSE! I HAD THEM IN MY HAND!! WHY DID I HAVE TO PAUSE?" Maria jaunts nearby and says... "I'm going to have to ring you up at the electronics register since we got those from the stockroom." Amazed and bewildered, I quickly pay and walk calmly yet quickly out of the store, as I hear Maria start talking with the stock room guy and the random Target guy in front of electronics about something DS related. I get outside and laugh manically as I skip to my truck as people stare uncomprehendingly.

Today was a good day.

Thanks guys.

Well, almost 8:00 and no posts of "Hey! Walmart's got DS's on sale! :D" so I'm guessing that was just another clueless employee unable to read.

Ah well.

I sent my mom off to the Target that said that they would have them this morning at 8. I have to leave for class at 8:10 so if she gets one before that I will post. Fingers crossed.

I would guess that it'll be just like last week - you'll see a number of stores try to sell these things today (confusing CD/DVD Tuesday releases with the whole DS Lite thing), but soon Nintendo will find out, and the whole business will be stopped.

As near as I could tell, nobody in the Northeast was able to weasel one out of an employee, so I gave up trying myself. I have a preorder in at EB Games for my girlfriend, so went back there and put in a preorder for myself last night (they're still quoting the 11th as the street date). At this point it's only five more days, and this thing is something of an impulse purchase anyway, so I'll just enjoy Guild Wars until Sunday.

I went to walmart at like 2am but they didn't have them out. They did however have the old DS's reduced to $119. I may stay up and try and score a DS Lite at Target when they open.

Well, One of the Walmarts in my area now say they are on sale today June 6th. She said they wouldnt be out on the floors 'till 12 tho. Who knows. I'm headed that way around 10:00 anyways and will see what happens.

Wal-Mart's web site still lists Nintendo's release date of the 11th. It'll be interesting to see how many clueless employees start selling them anyway.

What's the main reason to be selling DS Lite today? The street date is June 11th, what about the fine for each unit sold?

I'm willing to go check in a wal-mart in my way to work, but it seems that will be a waste of time.

No dice at the local Walmart. I'll try others as the day progresses. I noticed something as I combed the empty electronics section though. A notice pinned up (that nobody saw) that had *just* gotten there warning employees not to sell the Lite. I believe it also listed a product number. 580143, use it at your own decretion as I have no idea what its used for or its relevance to the Lite.

I was so damned close to getting it too.

Not out until 12. That's just strange - I mean, what an odd thing to be wrong about.

I guess I'll check Walmart after I get off work (conveniently at noon), though I'm still not expecting to have any luck.

I'm doubting the product number will be much use to anyone at Walmart, since their computer locks out the sale and actually needs to be overwritten until Walmart wants it to be sold.

Ya, I have my doubts that they will do it today, even tho she said on the phone today is the day. I clearly saw the big red stickers JUNE 11TH on the boxes when I went last week.

About stickers some people said that they saw a June 6th sticker on some Lites... well, I'm not heading Wal-Mart until a confirmation, don't want to waste my time.

Well the Target that told me yesterday that they were putting the lites out at 8am today lied. The manager said the employee was misinformed and there was no way he could sell them. I guess my mom made a fuss and he ended up giving her a $10 gift card. Oh well, have to wait 5 more days. Good luck to everyone else.

I managed to get one today at Target in Newport News, VA. The one in Williamsburg refused to sell me one, so they lost out on a sale to them. They weren't on the shelves yet (they were in a drawer), but they had no problem selling me one.

Ya cause one man's experience on the internet is %100 proven fact... Nobody said all Target's were going to release it on the 6th, just a bunch of people were told that their stores were going to sell them early. Just as when this thread was created some Target's were dumb enough to put the DS Lite's out as soon as they recieved them.

Already been there. Kmart's computers have a lock on the product until the 11th too.

What technique did you use? the snood method? or just straight up asking them in electronics for it. How many are left? I might be able to run by there on the way home from work...

June6th is BS.
Just got back from 2 walmarts that said they had them and June6th was the release date they told me...until we try and ring them up.
No-go untill June11th folks.

Yup, same story from here. Sunday Sunday Sunday.

Where the heck do you figure they got the June 6 idea?

Probably from the 2 boxes in the stock room. One says "Nintendo DS Brain Academy - June 6" and one says "Nintendo DS Lite - June 11".

Its a gamble, but considering how easy it is to mistake the two brown Nintendo crates then there is a good chance that they'll also make the mistake of putting the Lites on shelf Jun 6. Either way, I sure am glad I found mine already. I'd hate to be wasting time still looking for one.

EVERYTHING comes out on Tuesdays, movies, video games, blah blah, it's just when new stuff always comes out. They probably assumed it would be the next Tuesday after the stuff arrived. However, others in this forum have said that they saw the shipment and the labels said 6/6. Damn you Nintendo!!!!!!!

Yeah, I had said in an earlier message that DVDs and CDs come out on Tuesdays, so I'm sure this is where employes are getting this date from.

It's only five more days; we'll all survive.

I just hope they don't come out with more colors that soon. I really wanted something other than white, but my impatience got the better of me.

Tried the number telling method to a guy who got it from the electronics stockroom, was at the register when he asked a manager who just happened to walk by why they didn't have them on the shelf and the gig was up.

So close....
