So I'm about halfway through Tomb Raider now and while many elements of the presentation are still annoying and hard on my eyes they haven't given me anymore headaches at least. The problem I'm running into now is that I just feel zero motivation to actually play the second half. It's like I've seen everything I need to and I'm full sort of... full. Which isn't to say that I dislike the game but something's just not clicking. Maybe it's that it's too Ass Raider's Creed or these big open areas that my OCD forces me to wander through picking up every little thing I can before moving on or just the story.

Maybe it's just the weight of the hype; I went into Last of Us expecting to be underwhelmed but expecting TR to be the pinnacle of the series. If I wasn't around eight hours in I would just trade it to break even while I can and come back to it when it hits $10 but I'm not going to want to just up and replay that much or be lost half way through. If I force myself to keep with it is it going to be worth it?
it doesn't 'improve' if that's what you're asking. if you're 8 hours in, you know what you're getting. all the elements that feel like they -might- improve (like crafting) never materialize. actually, there are several 'unfinished' feeling aspects to the game where it feels like features got cut so all you see are wisps of them. this isn't to say the game is broken or anything; just that you can see where they wanted to take it if they had more time.

it's a solid game. if you're ocd'ing collectables for a future plat, give up now... the online trophies will break you anyway. just get through the game and sell it. i 100% the SP and never got my plat for that very reason, and i wish i'd just played it.

I really enjoyed my time playing Tomb Raider. I also felt this compulsion to try to find every collectible before I moved on, but I finally said fuck it. After you beat the game you can go back and find anything you missed. They only add a little XP anyway. But yeah, I'd say its worth playing to the end.
I really enjoyed my time playing TR as well. But I did NOT feel like backtracking through more than half of the game to finish up tombs I couldn't get to earlier in the game because I didn't have the proper tools to do so until much later in the game.

I tried the Sound Shapes demo last night. Seems good, but I don't know. I'm a bit on the fence still. I may end up passing on it and saving my credit for Spelunky Vita and, eventually, Cloudberry Kingdom Vita! :)

I kind of just played through it, not going on a collectible hunt. I didn't do all of the Tombs but I found them to be sort of entertaining even though they were simple. I'd say the meat of the game though is in the moment to moment. I also like having a badass bow to use. Not sure how I'd feel though if I were going for 100%.

What irritates me is that apparently I missed SP trophies that you only have one shot at and can't go back and get again after the story's over.

Oh yeah, I read that the online trophies are like 60 hours.

I'm assuming you mean the one where you have to talk to all the characters and finish the conversations with them? Yeah I missed that too because its not obvious when to have the talk. That's part of what made me say fuck it with the collectible a after awhile because I knew I wouldn't play through again just for that trophy. Plus the multiplayer level up shit.

I liked playing the game though. Lots of interesting stuff going on if you ignore trying to 100% it.

Considering the quirks of their system (unable to purchase games which you "own" already due to PS+, etc.) it's not THAT stupid of a question.
lol, where would the games disappear to? He made it sound like there was a PSN goblin.

I was thinking recently that perhaps the inability to purchase IGC games isn't the oversight we all assume it is. Maybe they deliberately do that so people have incentive to stay subscribed.

He's actually a troll. And he laughs maniacally as he takes away your digital ownership of your games so you'll have to stay on plus forever! MWAHAHAHA

But seriously, I always thought that as well about the inability to purchase stuff. I mean people have been complaining about it to them for years and they haven't mentioned why it's that way or acknowledging it. But who knows.

Looks like the "Best of PSN Vol. 1" disc dropped to $20 at Gamestop, for those that may not have any of these games it's a pretty good deal.

http://www.gamestop.com/ps3/games/best-of-playstation-network-vol-1/109645?utm_source=linkshare&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_campaign=deeplink&cid=afl_10000087&affID=77777&sourceID=FKSJxY2VJAk-ID4usNOHqoIvNFpRTwDCPg

Now that is tempting. I don't own any of them (surprisingly) and I'm really interested in picking up 3/4 of them. Why do I get the feeling they may become PS+ freebies in the future?

I think When Vikings Attack is guaranteed to hit PS+ at some point, it's cross buy and just hit on EU this month. Also keep in mind that you don't get the Vita version if you buy this disc.

I don't think Fat Princess will ever be on PS+, it's rather old and was also just on sale for like $3.50.

I personally think Sound Shapes will hit PS+ eventually as well, but that's just a total guess.

Yeah, kind of wishing I hadn't bought FP and Sound Shapes already since I would like to check out Tokyo Jungle.

Wow, I know that TLoU came out mid-June but that's still surprising to see SotC take the top spot like that. Hopefully that encourages Sony to get The Last Guardian out of limbo. TJM entirely deserves the top mobile ranking (for whatever that's worth). Also goes to show that the Atlus RPG sale paid off pretty well.

First, we're not all you. Second, playing with myself for 15 hours sounds like something I don't have nearly enough lotion for.
that's the one thing i hate most about trophies -- that i end up doing grindingly painful things for hours, sometimes, because i did so many other things during the playthrough that missing out on one bronze trophy for the plat seems silly.

i never had any need/desire to 100% a game before trophies. i just played it for fun, mastered it if i loved it, and moved on. many trophies don't bother me at all; i like a new challenge, or having to try a new approach to a problem. but i smh at all the devs that put excruciating trophies into their games.

Wait, a second, I think I am confused.

Do all the Sound and Shapes DLC have levels? Or just the car DLC?

I'm not super into creating stuff in games. It just takes up too much time.

I'm down to purchase the ones with levels, but that is it.

I say Stop collecting and just finish the story. I beat it in ~10 hours and I'm not a very good gamer. If you want to go back and collect do it later. I loved that game.

But I watched a youtube trailer for the 80s and Dubstep on and it said it had a milkcrate of levels.

Oh god I'm confused. I should trust you. I should embrace this.

I wish Guacamelee would go on sale already, the steam gold edition is really tempting specially since it comes with all the dlc plus a free copy of mutant blobs attack but I rather play this game on the Vita.

That's why I have no plats, had a couple games where I was planning to because the trophies were reasonable and then after I started realized that oh wait there's one just stupid one and eff that.

I say Stop collecting and just finish the story. I beat it in ~10 hours and I'm not a very good gamer. If you want to go back and collect do it later. I loved that game.
You say that like it's a choice to stop having OCD.

Oh god I'm confused. I should trust you. I should embrace this.
The milk crate is a curated collection of community created levels if I'm not mistaken.

Do ps1 classics ever go on sale? Specifically some of the old RPGs, the more niche ones? Stuff like Vanguard bandits, Saiyuki, Rhapsody, Wild arms, Legend of Dragoon, Breath of Fire, Front mission, ect? I'd love to replay, or finally finish some of these on the go but theres a lot of them i want to buy. Im wondering if i should hold off for a sale but i dont seem to really recall one happening. I notice a lot of the square ones are more expensive. Stuff like the Final Fantasy's (never did beat IX). My guess is those would have a better chance of a sale, but it was the more niche ones i really wanted to snag.

I've already come to the conclusion that Suikoden II will never be on PSN =( Im relegated to my disc copies only for that one. I actually own pretty much all the ones i want to buy, but its fun taking it on the go with my psp or vita. The vita especially makes some of them look pretty nice.

So any hope for a sale on these or should i just bite the bullet and pay $6+ for all of them and $10 for the square ones?

There was a huge Final Fantasy sale a bit back that had some PS1 Classics included. Currently Rayman 1 and 2 are on sale, and Wild Arms was given out free a while ago. They don't go on sale that often, but I would wait unless you are dying to play them now.

I've been waiting on a Guacameele sale as well. Really looking forward to playing it, love me some MetroidVania style games done right.
I'm actually about to replay all the damn GBA and DS Castlevania games which I've beat each 3 times already lol. Every year I get the itch for it. Then it won't go away until I play them. <---First world problems haha

God, I hated Harmony of Dissonance. The other two GBA vanias were incredible, though. I've only played Ecclesia of the DS ones, and didn't care for it much.

I've played and beaten all the GBA and DS Castlevania games except for Harmony of Dissonance... I couldn't stand that game to play more than 3 or 4 hours of it.

Here's how I would *personally* rate the games in terms of enjoyment:

1. Dawn of Sorrow: I really felt this was the pinnacle of handheld Castlevania, and it improved on Aria of Sorrow in every way (except art style).  The visuals and music were excellent, I *STILL* prefer its soul system the most out of any other Castlevania gameplay mechanic, and even the story wasn't too shabby.  The secrets at the end of the game were a nice plus too, and probably some of the best of the handheld CV games, though obviously not as mind-blowing as SotN's.

2. Aria of Sorrow: Great art style, unique plot line (gasp), and the great soul mechanic system.  I liked the introduction of quests and an RPG like hub, as well as the ability to customize my gameplay with the hundreds of soul combinations available.

3. Order of Ecclesia: I felt this was much more streamlined than most portable Castlevania games, but I still found its simpler systems enjoyable.  The artwork was great (especially after the mundane Saturday morning look of DoS and PoR), the music returned to form, and its setpieces were some of the best of all the portables.  The gameplay system wasn't nearly as versatile as the soul system, but it still offered several viable methods of beating the game.

4. Portrait of Ruin: I hated the art style and constant babble (SHARLOTTO! JONATHAN!) but I appreciated the willingness to experiment with the core combat mechanics.  Having two people at all times (including using all the secret pairs that you unlock) was a treat, as I've never played anything similar in a Castlevania game before.  The world also offered much more variety than previous games in terms of atmosphere and background, though some areas really lost the "creepy" CV vibe for me.

5. Circle of the Moon: Incredible game when it came out, but I don't feel it's aged very well.  The environments are drab and boring with little variety, the sprites are tiny with a very loose feel, and the card gameplay system just wasn't very versatile.  Still, this was amazing back when the GBA came out, and was also the biggest reason I'd curse the original system's lack of backlight.

99.  Harmony of Dissonance: Sure, I know some people probably like this game, but if I have to play this game again in my lifetime it'll be too soon.  The art was decent but the gameplay was uninspired and boring... but of course, worst of all, the music grated as if a banshee was tearing out my eardrums.  I had to turn off the volume after a while (sacrilege for a Castlevania game) but even then the gameplay proved too mundane for me to continue.

Awesome game, terrible cover art (on the printing run that I bought, anyway). :p

I love them all equally really haha. I like that each one has it's own quirks and merits. And each has a different take on the combat. With the exception of the Sorrow ones but they were both awesome as well. Maybe I have nostalgia glasses on, but I'll be playing them over and over again until I die lol.

@Josh Wow...box art WITHIN box art!!! That is pretty bad haha. Luckily my copy is the NA edition of the game with more normal art.

Well, I caved on ordering Xillia a whole two days after it came out. Showed up in my gold box for a whopping $3 off. Figured that otherwise I was just going to keep obsessively refreshing AWD until it showed up and then probably still pay like $52 for it unless it was damaged.

They need to have another one of those, I want FF 8 and 9.

that's the one thing i hate most about trophies -- that i end up doing grindingly painful things for hours, sometimes, because i did so many other things during the playthrough that missing out on one bronze trophy for the plat seems silly.

i never had any need/desire to 100% a game before trophies. i just played it for fun, mastered it if i loved it, and moved on. many trophies don't bother me at all; i like a new challenge, or having to try a new approach to a problem. but i smh at all the devs that put excruciating trophies into their games.
I'm glad I don't have this level of addiction to trophies or achievements. If I don't want to do the things necessary for a trophy, then I don't do it. If I'm enjoying it enough to do everything, then I'll keep going. They're more of a record of the things I've done than a list of required goals to accomplish.

YES. Completely agree. Progression through the castle has no flow whatsoever. I know all Castlevanias have copious backtracking but there's something about the placement and room design in this particular one that makes getting from one point to another a pain. I never bothered to finish it.

Shhhhhhhhh. You're going to awake...he-who-must-not-named with all this ps1 talk.

Totally agree. @Affa is about to hit you over the head with a super academic response as to why you're wrong, though, hahaha.

For those getting Sound Shapes, there's still a few days left to get free DLC.

Thanks. I posted in the thread yesterday and just bought the rest of the SS DLC. I'm debating on Rayman Origins since I love platformers but the demo kind of annoyed me even though I hear such rave reviews about the game.

I really enjoyed Tomb Raider and have been working on getting to level 60 and unlocking all characters this past week. I'm level 51 and play a few hours at a time so I don't get too worn out. Like others, I missed the conversation achievement, but I enjoyed the game so much that I zoomed through it a second time during launch week and completed everything minus the multiplayer at the time. Really great game that I would play again if it comes to PS+.

Oooh I forgot about that Best of PSN Vol. 1 disc. Dang. I already bought Fat Princess and Sound Shapes and am interested in the others but will wait for sales on them or preferably for them to hit PS+.

@rpg Thanks for posting the Sound Shapes car DLC video. Now I'm even more excited to get the code. I would have bought it otherwise, but free is great.
