Seriously, this is one of the reasons I never go back to those games unless they are HD remakes. Not because I am so much a trophy whore. I cant keep up with the serious gamers like gettinmoney and velo and the rest. Serveral people including Frisky touched on it a few pages back. Trophies keep a nice record of the games you played and what you did in them. That and Ps1 games look like shit and Ps2 games arent much better. I will play Vice City again one day...but hopefully we get an HD remake at some point so I wont have to.
You know what used to keep track of your accomplishments? Unlockables that could only happen if you beat the game in a certain amount of time and other criteria. Now, instead, we have achievements and trophies and have to pay for the unlockables, that are already on the disc.

Jak and Daxter are far better plataformers than Sly/Ratchet. Ratchet devolved into...something. Sly is the closest to Jak and Daxter plataforming and story.

You know, I think about that every time with dlc for freaking costumes and in game items etc. Don't even get me started on free to play games lol.

I really really miss the days I only had to be good at the game to unlock things. And EVERYTHING was in the game already. That's why I refuse to ever give up my old school gaming collection of goodness. Gaming was a much happier time for me back then.

Course I'm not saying this gen games are bad (I am saying F2P is bad haha) it's just sad sometimes what the industry has evolved into.

Old man rant over... :oldman:

The original Jak and Daxter was the only true platformer in any of the series, IMO. With that said, they all have platforming elements and I think they are a larger part of the gameplay overall in the other 2 series than in J&D due to the wanna-be GTA style of Jak 2 and 3. There was very little platforming in those 2.

Unless you are taking about All 4 One, and to a lesser extent Full Frontal Assault, I am not sure what you mean by the devolved. The rest of the series has all been 3rd person action games with platforming elements.

Yeah but with sites that track your progress now, you don't even have to turn on your console to view those, let alone boot up the game itself. The only proof I have that I 100% Vice City was loading up the game, and then loading up the save.

I do hate the pay for unlockables crap.

Obviously this is what I meant. Really nice to see what I played several years ago and remember some games fondly and others not so fondly.

God damn it, I was just about to play the original Metroid!  Thanks a lot NinjaSquirrel!  The game only came out 27 years ago!  Ridiculous!  :)

Justin Bailey, who doesn't like code based saves?
Oh man, I remember the days where I had to write down a damn 20-25 character code to save my damn game lol. THAT I don't miss haha.

For those that remember this (please don't let me be the only one) the worst code save in history is the code you have to input in Golden Sun Lost Age for the GBA to transfer all your content from the first Golden Sun. That was literally hundreds of characters long.

EDIT: And ouch. CaptainTek just dropped an epic Jak and Daxter hate bomb below me. Time to get in the shelter before the war ensues.

Then you had games like Mega Man where the code saves were very simple grid based. I was going through some old games and found some old codes from my childhood. I was thinking damn what's all this chicken scratch. The best is when playing Final Fantasy and finding yourself making notes and drawing your own map. Gotta love those old days where the Internet wasn't the go to place to a games solution. Thank goodness Zelda came with battery saves.

Talking about maps and drawings. I had the whole map from Zelda penciled out cube by cube on paper haha. I even put little notes where stuff was like items, dungeons, etc.

*sniff* Nostalgic trip

I just played the first Jak game for the first time about a year ago on the HD collection, and I really enjoyed it. I'd probably give it an 8 or an 8.5 out of 10. I've heard 2 and 3 switch of the style of the game quite a bit, but I can't comment on those since I haven't played them.

Out of the three original games from the 3 main PS2 platformers, I'd rank it:

1. Jak and Daxter

2. Ratchet and Clank

3. Sly Cooper

I'm excited to check out all the sequels, I haven't played any of them. (I hear Ratchet gets better and better as the series goes on, and I know that Sly 2 has a fucked up camera control which is tempering my excitement for it.)

The best part was when you couldn't read your own horrible writing or the ink/lead smudged so you couldn't enter your code and continue your game. At least the Mega Man grid was harder to fuck up.

If my old crotchety brain recalls correctly, there was some game where you had to enter a series of pictures/icons instead of a alphanumeric code. Or am I just making that up?

I will say the first Jak was better than the first Ratchet. If I had to describe it in line graph terms:

Jak is a downward slope
Ratchet is a bell curve
Sly is an upward slope

I never could get into Jak & Daxter, although I played the PSP one to almost completion and then stopped. I played the first Ratchet which I liked but I hear good things about Going Commando. My favorite by far though is Sly. I just like the character a lot more I think overall. The games mix it up a good amount although I've only played 1 and about 3\4 of 2. Looking forward to the rest as well.

It's the best finding stuff that barely legible now. I've come across old notes and the penmanship is horrible since I was a kid. I always had a pad of paper and pen ready for any notes. I've been playing games since Atari 2600 and I don't recall the game with a save feature that used icons. I would assume there's a game out there with those features.

Classic, that would be great if you found that map. The 80's for gaming was always making some kind of notes.

That must be the one I was thinking of. Multiple game items on a grid. Good luck deciphering my drawing of that shit.

Jak and Daxter is probably my favorite 3D platformer of all-time, though the change of style in Jak II killed my buzz to keep playing the series even though I have all three on PS2. The notion that they did an open world platformer where you don't have hubs, load times, or set levels to go through was an amazing accomplishment for that early of a PS2 game.

All three of those series change quite a bit with the sequels, though Ratchet & Clank is the smallest of the bunch. Still, adding the XP system and strafing controls completely changes how you play the game. I have all three collections and am on the sequels of Ratchet & Clank and Sly Cooper while I'm still on the original in Jak & Daxter.

So question on PJM: can anyone tell me what upgrading the towers actually does?  I'm sure it makes them better but the only one that has a noticeable effect with is the arrow tower where it's range expands.

This thread makes me feel better, as I'm not the only one always playing catch up with older games. I have to say though Sony did a good thing by bringing these over in HD. Not always the popular thing but it made it easier for me to go back to some of these games.

If you click on the tower, it'll tell you what the next upgrade does. It's generally either better range or more power.

Aladdin (SNES) too. And I think some of the Megaman games.

You have no idea, it was about a month ago I last counted but I had bought more PS2 games (whether through PSN or as HD remakes) than actual PS3 games. Since then I've bought a couple more of those collections and if you count the games individually it should be noticeably more than the number of PS3 games.

Wait, you can click on the towers?!

My sentiments exactly. The single biggest frustration for me this generation has been the emergence of DLC. RE2 was a classic example of how to handle unlockables by earning the rocket launcher, hunk and tofu, and easter eggs like the Brad Vickers encounter to get the costumes. And your not old, these whipper snappers have no appreciation, no respect!

I'm almost afraid to know the answer, but better than...64? Galaxy? Banjo Kazooie? ...really?
I apologize for having an opinion.

I liked Super Mario 64, but got bored of it about halfway through. It also felt like a plain-looking game. I loved Super Mario Galaxy, but it's major fault is how poorly lives are handled that nearly ruined the end for me and the sequel is worse because they couldn't bother to fix that major flaw. Never played Banjo Kazooie or Donkey Kong 64, as I didn't enjoy Rare's 3D platformers on the N64. The DKC games were probably the only Rare games I really enjoyed at the time, though I enjoyed the bits I've played of Kameo and Nuts & Bolts on Xbox 360. The N64 was mainly a wrestling console for me.

I find that character wise, Ratchet and Clank doesn't hold a candle to Jak and Daxter. Ratchet and Jak aren't personality studs, but Daxter is and Clank is flat. Also, the Jak and Daxter trilogy is a nice coming of age story and Daxter alone takes that series to a whole new level. Sly 1 was good, but didn't interest me to keep going. I played A Crack In Time and hated it.

I agree, Mario 64 was really most remarkable for being the one that set the bar on what a 3D platformer could be while doing it as one of the few really worthwhile games for the N64 after launch. The games that came after might have lacked some of that spotless finish Nintendo seems to apply to everything but were far more interesting and innovative. Rayman 2, the Banjo Series, Jet Force Gemini, Tonic Trouble, Rocket, Conker were all far more interesting games that had their own flaws but took the SM64 foundation and ran with it in their own direction.

That's how you sell towers if they're useless to you or upgrade them with extra gems, which is only a good idea after you've gotten them to red flags.
Oh I thought you meant like poking them with your finger. Never noticed seeing it say what the upgrade would be before but I probably just wasn't paying attention.

The DKC games were probably the only Rare games I really enjoyed at the time, though I enjoyed the bits I've played of Kameo and Nuts & Bolts on Xbox 360. The N64 was mainly a wrestling console for me.
Ah, makes sense. Not sure when you actually got a chance to play it, but Mario 64 was the first 3d platformer I ever played. Blew my mind as a kid. Then Banjo Kazooie/Tooie, DK64, etc. By the time Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Sly finally came around (2002!!), I had my mind made up (unfairly, perhaps) about what I wanted from these sort of games.

I think this is exactly why I hold Mario 64 in such high regard. On a technical level, it may have been outclassed by just about every 3d platformer that followed it, but it was first. It virtually created the genre. I'm glad they made the Sony HD collections, though. I already really like Sly. Jak is decent (actually played 1 & 2 on ps2), but Ratchet & Clank is still not clicking with me. Hopefully it eventually does.

Contra is usually called a run & gun, no?
yes, technically. but it's such a dominant influence that for me, the genre is 'contra'. 'double dragon' has that honor in beat-em-ups. and then there are the shinobi/rush'n attack crossbreeds... (oh, how i miss arcades).

So question on PJM: can anyone tell me what upgrading the towers actually does? I'm sure it makes them better but the only one that has a noticeable effect with is the arrow tower where it's range expands.
depends on the tower, but generally improves range, speed, and/or damage inflicted. gold is certainly worth the 3 gems vs. time, assuming you have gems to spare. assuming i've bought access to the tower(s) i need for a level, the 5 gems that take you from red to gold is 5 gems well spent.

never underestimate unlocking new towers, though. a fully upgraded hive, for example, is beastly against pretty much anything. (note- in case you don't notice, they follow you).

RE: trophies, HD, etc.

it's amazing how HD collections did such an amazing job replacing BC. between upgraded visuals and trophies, it makes playing vanilla ps2 games feel almost wrong.

that said, in some cases, i'd prefer just full remakes. i'm actually really surprised this almost never happens, because i feel like certain franchises would be prime for it. especially ones that already have sequels in a new engine; i'd love to buy vice city done with gta5 tech...

I got my PS1 around the spring of 1997 and an N64 for Christmas the year after that, which came with Super Mario 64 so that was sort of it for a while until I got WCW/nWo Revenge to turn it into a wrestling console from then on. My 3D platformer path pretty much went from Crash Bandicoot to Spyro the Dragon to Super Mario 64 and so on, so my love of Crash lead to me following Naughty Dog to Jak & Daxter and was wowed by that game so much.

To be honest, I was a big, big fan of Yoshi's Island, so I think seeing the next Mario game being so plain-looking was sort of a turn-off once I had my fill with the game. I played the hell out of those first few levels, but those were enough to show me what I wanted to see. I didn't bother with Yoshi's Story or whatever it was on N64 since that didn't seem to be any good since I can bet that that would be a follow-up point. I played DK64 since I loved the DKC games, but the focus on shooting was a turn-off since I liked the potential of that world a lot. Not liking that turned me off of Banjo-Kazooie, Conker's Bad Fur Day, and pretty much anything else Rare did from then on. It wasn't until I could get BK Nuts & Bolts and Kameo for dirt cheap on XBL that I gave them a good shot and found them to be enjoyable. Nothing amazing, but enjoyable for a good price.

As someone who only had a Nintendo 64 for that generation, Super Mario 64 totally blew my mind.  It's still my favorite platformer of all time, and 2nd favorite game of all time.  Obviously nostalgia is involved there but still.  I'm surprised you considered it "plain looking" Frisky, but it sounds like you had some other current gen stuff to compare it to.  Super Mario 64 was my first game of that generation, and everything looked absolutely stunning to me.

The only only only critique I would have of Super Mario 64 is that the Bowser fights were underwhelming.

I played Super Mario 64 for the first time a few years ago (well after finishing the Sly, Jak, and Ratchet PS2 trilogies). Loved every moment of it and still enjoy it every time I boot it up now and again. I couldn't get through most N64 games (RARE stuff mainly) but SM64 totally struck a chord for me even so many years after release. I find it very surprising for anyone who likes platformers not to like it, but I guess no game is for everyone.

On the topic of SM64...

If anyone's looking for a new Super Mario 64 experience, check out the multiplayer mod for a fun time.  If you have a modded Wii, there's a good .wad floating around with it, too.

Never had the opportunity to play Mario 64 (though I did try it out at Blockbuster, where they had the system set up -- back when they used to rent consoles out). I got a PS1 for Christmas instead of an N64, and it was a dream come true. The console was bundled with Crash Team Racing, which, for me, is still one of the greatest games of all time.
