Rusty's Retirement is addictive. It's supposed to be something that plays while you do other stuff, but I play it as my main game. I haven't stopped playing it since I bought it today, got 13.3 hours playtime already but some of that was while AFK. My farm isn't optimized very well, I need to figure out how to improve it.

I just looked it up...what is exactly the point of the game? Do you do anything in it or is it just a load up and it manages itself? Honest question.

I haven't played it, but I imagine the gameplay in games like that isn't about doing the things, but maintaining things and making sure everything runs smoothly efficiently, and productively. Like if you're running a farm and don't ever tend to it then it's going to be a mess, but if you set things up properly and tend to them regularly then you'll get a nice return on investment.

You usually have something to do. You plan the layout, what buildings and upgrades to buy, what seeds to plant. You plant the seeds. Choose the helper robots and what upgrades to give them. Always working to make more money to buy or upgrade more stuff. But the robots do the rest of the work like watering, harvesting, transporting.

Ahh ok that sounds very chill.

So my friends and I picked up Crime Boss during the steam sale and have played the past 2 nights and oh man, it's fun as hell. Didn't play at launch so I'm sure they improved things but idk why this game got ragged on so hard. It's not perfect by any means but it has enough QOL improvements over Payday 2 that it's a super enjoyable coop heisting experience. Haven't touched single player, maybe that's where the faults lie, but having 4 Danny Trejo running around throwing bricks at each other while attempting to stealth these missions then inevitably going loud, it's been stupidly fun

Alright took the plunge and grabbed the 64gb lcd deck at the 11th hour lol. Any game recommendations for someone who only has an series x and is jumping into the steam deck? Definitely going to be grabbing a storage upgrade on Prime Day so I can play Spiderman, horizon and the other playstation games on steam.
Also how long do they usually take to ship the console out and get delivered? Is it actually 3 to 5 days? And from what I've seen EmuDeck is the way to go for the times im feeling nostalgic?

I ordered one June 27th and it came July 3rd. So basically 3-5 business days is accurate as they sent shipping info 3 days later.

Check for bundles of games you are interested in like Humble, fanatical, etc. before buying on Steam directly. You can check for sales and if a game has been bundled on other retailers on isthereanydeal. I'd check out any game that has overwhelmingly positive reviews on Steam and supports the Steam deck with controller support on other platforms like Windows. Keep in mind you can use a mouse with a Steam deck, but I haven't messed around with that yet so no idea if it works well for external mouse/keyboard games.

Is this your first time with PC gaming? What kinds of stuff are you into? I might have some past Humble/Fanatical games I can throw your way.
I got the 64GB when it came out and love it. Tons of fun. Enjoy!!

Yup been a console gamer my whole life. I did buy a valve bundle and a starwars bundle back in early 2010s when i tried to get into gaming on my laptop but never into it. And Well I've got a wife and two kids lol so i figured the Deck would be a good way to hang out with them and still game. Besides those playstation games it'll probably be my indie machine. Mostly enjoy narrative, racing and rougelike games. Might have to double dip on elden ring

The most console-like experience on the deck is to stick to Steam games (third party steam key sellers are fine, obviously), and ignore third party stores (epic, gog, blizzard) for now. Plenty of games work very well with zero tweaking. Some more demanding games will kick your cooling fan into high gear unless you adjust the settings a bit (Spiderman and Horizon)

ProtonDB is a good resource for finding out which games work very well and which need tweaking. User comments often include recommended graphics settings for specific games on the deck to keep framerates high or the cpu cool.

I don't know what you're level of comfort is with linux configuration but a drive upgrade requires relatively little. You're looking for a 2230 drive (22mm wide, 30mm long). If you're lucky enough to live near a microcenter, I upgraded my 64gb to their house brand 1tb (https://www.microcenter.com/product...-2230-internal-ssd-compatible-with-steam-deck). A few more mainstream drive options exist today.

For the drive swap you'll also need a usb-c flash drive or a usb-a to usb-c adapter and a normal flash drive so you can boot the recovery image after the swap.

Given your genres mentioned, I can tell you that Slay the Spire, Balatro, and Rogue Legacy 2 all run perfectly on Deck with no tweaking at all.

1. Go through the steam store and add games to your wishlist

2. Log in on GG.deals and connect your steam account to get a sense of when the game drops to an all-time low. I would recommend using the lowest price from non-3rd party retailers to get a realistic idea of how good of a deal it may be. At the bottom of a game's entry page you can exclude the keyshops and then adjust the graph to display the price trend all-time. I use this to see if the price drop is likely to be repeated or if it is likely the best I can expect based on history (some games are at all-time lows in early access but will never go on sale again for that low price once out of early access).

3. Download Aperture Desk Job as your first Steam Deck game to learn how the controls work with the haptics

4. Consider buying Vampire Survivors, Dave the Diver, Balatro, Stardew Valley, Hades, Brotato, and/or Slay the Spire.

BTW everyone remember 2 hours and I believe 2 weeks after purchase are the magic numbers to be under to get quicker approved and usually automatic refunds. I usually play the games I was unsure of for 30 minutes through an hour and 30 minutes to see if I like them. I'll take chances during the sale especially for stuff I never was able to demo or never had demos. I'll be giving at least 2-3 impressions from my summer haul stuff.

Thanks for the insight everyone. Ended up grabbing 64gb lcd deck, Spiderman remastered, Horizon zero dawn complete, Celeste, Hot Line Miami, and the Halo Spartan Bundle this morning before Summer Sale ended. Feel like a kid on Christmas again, this will be a long 3-5 business days lol.

Ratchet & Clank also runs great on steam deck btw.

I bought a Steam Deck after launch and when everyone was raving about it. It has been a great device and I really have enjoyed it.
I buy a lot of games cheap in bundles or on key sites. Fanatical is great for bundles. They have a couple of good ones right now for that include Rogue like games. I used CDkeys and Eneba as my main key sites because they accept PayPal.

My favorite steam decks games are:
  • Warhammer Space Marine Anniversary Edition
  • Monster Train
  • Dome Keeper
  • Black Mesa
  • Metal Gear Revengence
  • Dead Cells
  • Neon White
  • Shovel Knight Dig
  • RKGK/Rakugaki
  • En Garde!
  • Charlie Murder
  • Terror of Hemasaurus
  • Heat Signature
  • Orcs Must Die 2
A good mix of old and new games and some PC exclusives like Black Mesa, RKGK, En Garde, Heat Signature, Dome Keeper and Orcs Must Die 2.

Wow I knew Suicide Squad tanked hard.. but didn't expect it to be free this quickly. I guess I'll use a free trial just for that. I expect it'll come to Humble as a steam key before the end of the year as well

You don't need a subscription to play online Microsoft games on PC like you do on console, right? *specifically Forza Horizon 4 & 5 bought on Microsoft store.

I haven't played Chillquarium for a few months, and I thought that my fish tanks were earning money on their own that whole time. I just turned it on and realized there was a maximum amount of time you can earn money while offline, one week. I have all the money I need already, just found that surprising and a bit disappointing.

Summer sale game impressions Hexarchy played for 2 hours 36 minutes. I would have refunded this if I didn't get it on Fanatical (was cheaper but a risk if the game wasn't amazing, and it's average).

First of all this is a Civilization like game except with cards making for deck building. This makes it feel more like a board game, but a shallower one at that. You start with a city and research/build buildings/build units/choose civics which give certain use cards according to how much you are producing. This game runs like a Civilization lite with hexes to use, which may have food, gold, items gotten by building specific buildings on them like a pasture for cows. You use your cards every turn according to your resources and try to get a certain victory point limit, which ends the game at the turn a civilization passes this point. There is a quite a bit of RNG in what cards you draw and what's around you. One game I quit and restarted as I as very weak and had next to no special resources around my starting area. You can use gold to draw cards and I believe shuffle your cards into the deck.

The gameplay is Civilization at its most basic with really basic by the numbers fights (you may gain tactics from cards, but generally it's a higher numbers wins game), by the numbers resource gathering, a very basic trading which mainly gets gold, and a very straightforward production of everything. I forgot to mention on each card has the resources required to build it and if you have the right terrain/resources you can build it, although I believe it's only one building and one unit per city a turn. The tech tree is tiny as well making games very, very similar. Even Civilization's tech tree is pretty linear, but certain items or something may cause you to prioritize things first here. When researching or gaining a civic you get to choose 1 of so many cards (always the same for the items) to put into your hand and the rest is your discard. I feel the makers of Hexarchy wanted to get the basic Civilization feel (which it does achieve), but it feels so by the numbers it feels like a board game instead, and not the best one either. To make the RNG better you can and should burn cards (the first gets a single science as well as one more anvil I believe) as long as they are not needed or are made to be burned (firewood).

The graphics generally get it done with nice card art, but the art for the field can be hard to distinguish at times. I can't always tell which hexes have special resources. The graphics are basic on the map, but everything is OK enough distinguishable. This isn't like the Civilization games where the units stand out a decent amount. The sound is okay and the music the same. Nothing stood out.

I wish I bought this on Steam, as I would be getting a refund. This game offers multiplayer but I believe the game is extremely aggro. It is likely very aggressive bee lining to certain military units as I mentioned the game is very simplified in battles. This would likely make it very similar, but I'm not 100% sure on this. Overall this is just probably too simplified a Civilization game, and although it plays in a short time (about 30 minute to an hour per game), I don't think it offers enough meat on the bone. Frankly I think Through the Ages, which is a port of a good board game eclipses this game in every aspect and I would choose to play that every time. I would only get this bundled. 6/10

Another two game impressions in RoGlass, a tile laying roguelite game after 93 minutes and also Death Must Die after 58 minutes.

RoGlass is a strange game about tiles that have abilities. You have a long list of achievements that not only open up the space on the board they occupy, but also grant bonuses. To start with you only have a single tile and must play those. Playing these few will open up a few locks and spaces giving your more tiles to mess with. Then this games become a point collecting, tile laying, max the bonuses and unlock specific achievements the game. Honestly it's impressive that a lot goes one with a such a simple idea. The pool of tiles and achievements becomes large and lots of achievements are very, very specific such as putting 4 campfire tiles in a square. You can and will restart the game a lot of times as many times RNG will not let you get these achievements. The graphics are nice for tiles and every tile is very easy to tell apart from the rest. This game I feel is probably to much to the point for me, as it feels like a board game (was inspired by Sagrada a dice placement game), but may be too samey and too achievement hunting for me. I think I prefer a set of rules for a board game and if they want to legacy things to change rules/add stuff for later games. I think there is something cool and unique here, but a better end game or something would have solidified it for me. I would get this bundled only likely, and will be requesting a refund. 6.5/10

Death Must Die is another Vampire Survivors like, but this one is more active with charges and is trying to be like Hades X Vampire Survivors along with a tiny bit of Diablo. In this one you start off and a bunch of enemies come at you. There are pots/destructibles on the floor that can give gold and other things. Also on the map are yellow dots which are different interactables such as shrines (similar to Diablo giving a bonus for a certain amount of time). You go around getting XP and on level ups deities come up and say something like in Hades. These are also like Hades where you can get a dash augment, a main attack augment, spells, and passives. You don't choose which god you get, which can change during the run. You just choose what's best and if you choose the same one it goes up a level. You just survive and maybe there is a boss at the end of the stage, but I don't know. Also elites (which can drop a level or equipment) and little arenas surrounded by black flames challenge you. This is also in early access, so it's missing some things. You sometimes get equipment which acts similar to Diablo as well.

The graphics are excellent for this game and the sound are good as well. It's very clean and everything animates excellently. Overall I feel there is a good back bones of a game here, but it feels very light for EA. I think there is only two acts so far (one was updated recently I believe), and the gameplay feels samey after a bit. There is another early access Vampire Survivors game that feels much more Diablo like (forget the name right now) that is much better for exploration and equipment. I feel there is good stuff here, but it's not amazing either. I think it's need it's full acts in to make it special, and I may refund until the game is farther along. It's fun but just a bit limited right now is all. 7/10

One last Steam game impression in Zet Zillions after 3 hours 18 minutes, which is getting an important on July 18th (adding more bosses and the final act to the game). I actually gave impressions of the demo, but this is more of almost completing the first act. I'm waiting till the big update comes out before I play and try to complete the game.

Zet Zillions is a strange kind of Slay the Spire like game where you play a character commanding a ship which fights very strange things like insects/planets/bounty hunters/etc.... There is some type of story, but it's more banter between characters and they're all weird and it's kind of over the top. I don't care any of the characters, but the gameplay is unique. You have a certain amount of energy to use things and cards usually do damage (brains), give shield, or do population on enemies. If an enemy get their population filled it staggers them and they cancel their action. Many cards do damage/bonuses based on population. You generally want to kill the enemy with damage, but some planets can be colonized with population to beat them (missions mainly). There is also a special mechanic of fusing cards, which makes new cards/powers up cards/does abilities which is the main gimmick of the game. Lots of fusions are available and cards with a I believe a little red/blue square in the lower right corner can be fused. When you start an area you get missions which are generally doing something so many times like killing a certain number of enemies, but also bounty hunting missions (kill a specific enemy at a certain part on the grid) and colonize a planet. These give rewards when completed such as augments to cards, cards themselves and artifacts (generally from colonizing planets) that give flat bonuses. You go around the area till you get to the end boss which is at the other end of the area. There are also event parts which can generally give you bonuses, money, cards, or transforming/removing cards. There is quite a bit to it and every area feels a bit long. That's actually one of my main complaints as getting through all the areas takes a while as the battles aren't always quick. In fact most of them you wear down opponents and then hit them hard with a few heavy attacks. This makes the run feel long, but I think it's just one to take breaks on during the run.

The graphics are so solid and the sound and music are excellent too. I love the look of the game although the UI can get very clunky especially for fusions. The humor is not for me and feels like random anime nonsense, of which it's a homage to some like Gurren Lagan, which the first character looks like the protagnist and acts like them too. the gameplay is really king here, and it's satisfying. You can just go full on aggro with damage, but it's a good idea to vary things and have population effects too, especially since many cards get powered up on full populations or scale with population.

Overall I would say this is worth a buy and one of the better deck building card games I've played in a while. Wait to play with the big update, and play a challenging and unique game that just has some longer runs. I already knew I would like this game, so I got it on a Fanatical coupon, but I wouldn't refund anyway. 8/10

If anyone knows which game nitrosmob is referring to, let me know. That sounds right up my alley after being a little disappointed in Death Must Die

It is Halls of Torment. This one I feel could add some more (gave impressions a while back), but really feels more like Diablo in the exploring and especially the equipment. It was pretty hard if I remember correctly. I feel equipment is very tacked on in Death Must Die, but feels important in Halls of Torment. I just wish some of these games were not still in EA, as there is a lot of development still needed for most of these EA Vampire Survivor likes.

Also just to add I played Pizza Tower for about 28 minutes and it's a decent Wario like game that is tricky to control, but a lot of fun in it. Will likely give a better review after finishing a lot more/the whole game, but I enjoyed it and the platforming gets easier as you get used to momentum and all the quirks in controls.

Also I hope these game impressions do help some people maybe thinning their backlogs/wish lists or playing/buying games.

Pretty sure the answer is yes but when buying from Fanatical, Humble bundle or 'Grey market' sites I should get the codes and enter them into the steam wallet?
Figure it is the same process as when I get xbox keys from eneba or cd keys.

Are you asking about game keys or steam wallet currency? Currency I would redeem asap. Game keys.. varies. Fanatical is actually not gray market like seedy keys in that the developers get some of the sale. But some legit sites, especially humble, have been "selling out" of keys you've already purchased if you leave them unredeemed on your account.

Anyone have recommendations for a good gaming monitor using Dell rewards points from Alienware arena? Sub $3-400 would be best.

Hey, I meant to reply to this earlier but had to work this weekend. I've been very happy with the G2724D that I got in February. It's 27 inch 1440p 165 refresh and has a really great stand with full pivot. It's down to $180 plus you can get 15% back on Rakuten today. It goes on sale pretty often so if you don't have enough for it yet you might wait until the next DRP refresh.

I appreciate the info. I have $50 of rewards points mainly from the July events, but they don't expire for a while (around October) and I'm hoping to earn enough for a bit more in the ARP shop before purchasing. I'll keep that monitor in mind and bookmark it for now.
