I know it's not on Steam, but there is no Origin thread, so I'm putting this here.

I haven't regularly played a competitive FPS since 2005. Counter-Strike, with my college roommates. Each in our own room in the house, each with our own 1.5 L bottle of Arbor Mist (no lie). I was competitive back then. Definitely not the best, but by no means the worst, either. So I figure I'd try my hand at the beta of the new Battlefield - Hardline. Can't be that bad, right?

HOLY fuck WAS I OUT OF MY LEAGUE! I know I'm an old man now, but when did these games get to this point, with so much crap going on?? I played the first Black Ops for a few hours with my brother on PS3, and there wasn't this much stuff to do. To make an even more relevant comparison, we played the campaign on Bad Company 2, and it's nothing like this. 

Stealing and re-stealing money was the name of the game. Not that I got to do any of that. You could choose where to spawn in, which ultimately led to me dying faster, because I figured, hey, maybe I'll jump right in and catch someone off guard. Wrong. Dead. It only took me 3 rounds of that (1-9, for the record) before realizing, "Nope. Not a chance." It probably didn't help that my team was about as skilled as I was (5 mil to none in 2 of the 3 games).

For those that like these kinds of games, it could be a ton of fun. You can fly and fire from a helicopter, there's armored trucks abound, and there's a good variety of weapons and jobs to choose from. The game looks great. The animations look fantastic, and the game even tells you where the killshot hit you (my right femoral artery must bleed like a muthafutha). I'd recommend giving it a shot if you're into Payday 2 (which I've also only logged a couple hours of, but fared much better at).

Ultimately, I booted up Flawless Widescreen and moved on to Mass Effect, which kept me up too late, and now I'm exhausted at work. Good thing it's only a half day, and that my busy weekend will keep me from skipping sleep to play ME until at least Sunday night.

 
So did anyone download the free to play EA Sports FIFA World beta?  According to my email you can get free login gifts for the first 72 hours to "build your ultimate team".  Not sure if that offer is targeted.

My experience with competitive multiplayer FPS games has led me to this conclusion: there are very few of these that you can jump into and not get fragged so often it ceases to be even remotely fun. If you get in on the proverbial ground floor of some of these games and you play every day you can probably get to a point where you're not getting killed before you actually accomplish anything but most of them are not even remotely noob-friendly. Team Fortress 2 is one exception that I can think of because I can play it, even though I suck, and not get killed too much but it's not entertaining enough for me to want to play for hours on end. Mass Effect 3's co-op MP is actually one of the better multiplayer shooters I've messed with in a while but even that got boring for me after a while. There are some well-designed games out there, a few of which are noob-friendly, but this genre as a whole never did much for me.

With the battlefield games though it definitely depends if you are playing with friends in a squad or not, and its also not all about kills. Ive attempted to jump into some blops2 multiplayer games and just instantly get my ass handed to me and called a noob. Battlefield is slightly different though. Usually you can find some 'noob' type servers where they wont rag on you for sucking. Also the main point in battlefield is not kills, its points, which can be had in any number of ways besides kills like capturing points, repairing vehicles, healing teammates, providing ammo, etc. Theres been times Ive been in the top 2 of a round points wise while still having a kill/death ratio of like 0.5.

With the squads it helps since you can organize your small group and work together much more efficiently with everyone doing the part they are good at and it helps the team as a whole. If your just on your own though its alot tougher

A monitor with very high MHz (refresh rate) does alot to cure that, I'm sure Ashes can also jump in here. I remember this topic got brought up (did I bring it up?) and Portal 2 was the game of highlight. Response times are not the same thing as refresh rate, a 1ms monitor won't do anything for motion sickness. It's all in the MHz (60 MHz=60 frames per second,120 MHz=120 frames per second). Just going to a 120 will drastically cut that "queasy" feeling. As a bonus, 120's are prevalent and cheap now. I love my Asus. If you have an HDTV that's got 120 MHz, try that as a monitor to test it out.

 
I still have my CoH2 MP key from Alienware arena. It wasn't possible to buy the main game if you owned the MP portion back then. Anyone know if it is possible now?

I'm not waiting for it, I was just wondering if it'll come so everyone can get in on it. I just wanted to say it's pretty good, even for someone who isn't into that stuff. I saw warreni complaining about getting his ass whooped in online fps and what's cool about Destiny is you can play totally co-op and only kill the AI. I don't like competitive multiplayer so this was great for me.

that's cool. i'm glad people are enjoying it. though as far as coop fps go, i think pc has enough games in the genre, (Borderlands, L4D, Killing Floor) that people aren't jonesing for Destiny to come to pc.

It's easy enough to jump into a game like Call of Duty and rack up the kills, even if your kill/death spread isn't going to be pretty. You can kill people in those games by accidentally looking at them. The same can't quite be said of the Battlefield series. It's slightly slower paced, hitting your mark isn't as easy, sniping is (sort of) more realistic, etc. It's a more difficult game to jump into and learn, especially since you're probably going to be coming up against people who are much, much better than you and know what they're doing.

It's a much deeper experience than Call of Duty though. You should probably play the campaign (of 3 or 4) to get a handle of the controls and aiming/shooting dynamics before going into competitive multiplayer. It's difficult, but it's worth giving a shot.

I've heard a several people describe Destiny as a Halo meets Borderlands hybrid (re: gameplay), however I've yet to play the alpha so who knows. If there's some truth to that I'd be pretty happy.

As for GTAV on PC, I'm excited it's coming to PC but I think I'll wait until after it's released to see if it's a good port or not. I don't want to be a #FakeCAG for that game. Hopefully whoever ports the game is more competent and experienced than what happened to GTAIV.

In my opinion the gameplay itself is basically identical very similar to Resistance but with less interesting enemies, but then you add the leveling up, skills, weapons and armor, plus some interesting stuff like crossing paths with other parties, it all goes together and is pretty neat. The world is big and the speed bike is cool.

I've been trying to sell my PS3 copy in preparation for the double dip, but I'd wait for a discount. In no rush to replay the game.

I'm somewhat disappointed the usual flock of non-regular steam thread CAGs haven't posted the usual, "So when does the Steam Summer sale start? Does anyone know? I'm so excited!!! OMG!" I don't like this anticlimactic behavior.
