The 2013-14 NFL Thread

Even as a Patriots fan, I had to chuckle a bit at the reaction.

That said, I'm terrified. Needless to say, the Patriots are sunk this season without Brady. Hopefully it's nothing major.
As sick as I am of the Patriots always winning that division, I hope he's alright because the season just wouldn't be the same without rooting for Brady to lose.

Also, today is Tebow's birthday. You can't make this shit up any better.

This off-season hasn't been too kind to Von Miller. First he gets a four game suspension thrown his way for unknown reasons, and now he gets arrested for a warrant that was caused by something as stupid as not appearing in court.

It probably didn't make him feel any better when Swearinger tweeted "Everybody pray 4 justin keller".
At least he showed remorse that Keller got hurt on the play. Something he really didn't have to do considering the hit was 100% legal and follows the new NFL mandate of avoiding head injuries and tackling lower.

49ers trade their 2012 first round pick WR A.J. Jenkins for the Chiefs 2011 first round WR Jon Baldwin. I'd be surprised if wither guy made an impact on their new teams. At least for the Niners, Baldwin's contract is only guaranteed for this year.

Von Miller has been officially suspended by the NFL for 6 games to due violating the substance-abuse policy.

Antonio Smith is also suspended for the rest of the preseason and for the first game of the regular season. He's going to try and appeal it, but I think he should just suck it up. I'm a Texans fan and I still think him swinging that helmet at Richie Incognito was uncalled for. Even though they have some bad blood and Incognito is widely known as one of the dirtiest players in the NFL, Smith should've kept his cool even with Incognito yanking at his face mask.

The Browns continue to have bad luck with new running backs as Dion Lewis has been placed on the IR with his broken leg. Montario Hardesty is also on the IR, so he'll probably just be released when the season is over since they were pretty much going to cut him anyway due to injury issues during training camp.

There were some big cuts made already with 2012 late round CB Trevin Wade, FB Owen Marecic, and WR Jordan Norwood. They've got a billion fringe CBs and WRs to fill in those last few roster spots for each position, so it's not a huge surprise that those two got cut.

I stopped reading right here.

In all seriousness though, I've noticed since I began following NFL a lot more closely thanks to fantasy football (probably back in 99?) .. it seems like Cleveland has some impact rookie / signing go down every single season. I'm sure it's only a matter of time until T-Rich hits the IR, but man... how one team can have such shite luck, is beyond me.

It's gotta be beyond tough losing 4 straight Super Bowls, but at least, you know you played on a great team that had a lot of success.

The NFL and ~4500 former players reached a settlement over the league's past policies and procedures pertaining to concussions.

I think it's more about a promising new/young players than new signings since Chris Gocong and Phil Taylor were their big injury bugs last year, though Phil Taylor's absence lead to the rise of Billy Winn and John Hughes having really good rookies years for having no expectations at the draft that they'd be thrown to the wolves right away. The defensive line should be really good this year with Bryant, Taylor, Rubin, Winn, Hughes, and the other guys they have in rotation.

I don't think they've drafted a good running back since their return until Trent Richardson, but their attempts to add depth with Brandon Jackson and Dion Lewis over the past few seasons really killed their chance to get a good running game going. Even then, free agents like Jamal Lewis stunk up the joint and Peyton Hillis was run out of town in a very weird turn of events by the media and the rest of the team. Weirdly enough, they got rid of Owen Marecic at FB to put in Chris Ogbanaya in there at FB even though he's a small guy that came onto the team in Brandon Jackson's injury wake. If he wasn't slotted in at FB, he's probably be a good back-up to Trent.

Trent played all of last season with broken ribs, so he's proven to be tough enough to stick around as long as he doesn't get an ACL tear or something horrific like that. Having watched him throughout the pre-season, he looks a lot better when he's not trying to play with broken ribs, so he should do very well this season. It's just a shame that Dion Lewis couldn't keep the momentum going from that great first game to become the lightning to Trent's thunder for this season. Brandon Jackson hasn't done well, so that's probably not going to work out. Maybe the new guy they picked up that was dropped in favor of Dion Lewis works out for them.

I can see Trent being a tough SOB like Alex Mack, their center, who one game in 2011 with Appendicitis, had the surgery during the bye week that followed, and started their next game without missing a beat.

Matt Simms and Matt Leinart will start for the Jets and Bills respectively this week. How hilarious would it be for Simms to do better than Sanchez?

Didn't Cleveland draft RB William Green in the first round? That guy couldn't gain 4 yards with a 5 yard head start.

Yay, more Tebow news cycles. I hope he doesn't get picked up anywhere then we wont have to hear as much about him until next off-season. In theory anyway.

Tebow's NFL career is over. Don't feel bad for him, he's set for life and can have any job he wants... cept NFL quarterback. Not a bad life to have.

Tebow seems like he would be good in front of the camera... Although, somebody may still pick him up as a backup or practice squad later on in the season. Some QBs are going to get hurt.

I believe Pat Robertson and the 700 Club are looking for a good backup. They've got the first big story his on-camera debut too, how the NFL ran a good christian man out of the league because of his beliefs. Facts be damned!

I'm really sick of all these predictions for the end of the season already. Every year it's like this and it all means nothing.

I don't really care one way or another... He's still better than Sam Bradford of the Rams and we're paying that guy over ten million dollars a year to lose.

Well I believe today's the day teams have to start cutting the roster down to 53 players, so there's a ton of news about people being let go.

Some of the more notable ones being that the Packers let Vince Young go. Chargers cut Meachem. Steelers got rid of Dwyer. And the 49ers said bye to Austin Collie.

And on to more important news, Ed Reed was taken off the PUP list :D

Not surprised Tanden Doss is gone, especially after how horrible he was last year, but surprised Rainey didn't make it.

The Browns certainly made the sort of cuts that say they'll fill holes based on who gets cut today. They have just two runnings backs, four wide receivers, and no kickers on the roster as of the cut deadline, so they will probably pick up people to fill those roles in the next day or two. I'll take a guess that they'll look at Baltimore's Rainey, Cincy's Herron, and Pittsburgh's Dwyer for the back-up RB job.

Looking at the Ravens cut list I didn't see any major surprises. No offense to Doss but he needed to go last season.

Not related to the current season but I figured I'd share something that came up today. My buddy is a huge Browns fan and we give each other shit all the time obviously but I came across this framed poster today for $10 at a sports memorabilia store. I know I overpaid but as soon as I saw it I lost my shit laughing.

I forgot how bad the older NFL posters were.

The Browns cut some big names in LB LJ Fort, TE Kellen Davis, and RB Brandon Jackson. They also cut two offensive lineman and FB/TE Brad Smelley.

They picked up RB Bobby Rainey from Baltimore and RB Dennis Johnson from Houston to fill in holes at the RB position. They also grabbed TE MaqQueis Gray from San Francisco, TE Keavon Milton from New Orleans, OL Patrick Lewis from Green Bay, and LB Brandon Magee from Dallas.

Still no kicker on the roster. Maybe they like Spencer Lanning that much to do both, though I can't see that happening.

In Bradford's defense, the Rams haven't exactly given him a god damn thing to throw to.
I've made that excuse for him too over the years, but the guy just hasn't been that good. In close games he doesn't find a way to win and he hardly ever throws the ball down the field. This is his 4th year in the NFL, the time for excuses has passed and he has to step up.

The Browns finally have their kicker: Billy Cundiff. It seems like a good choice since he actually played for the Browns a few years ago while Phil Dawson was out for a couple of weeks and made all six of his field goals. To make room for him, they put G Jason Pinkston on the Designated-to-Return IR list that puts him out of action until halfway through the season.

awwww yisss.. Here we go.  :whee:

edit spoke too soon darn it 10 more minutes lol.
