The 2013-14 NFL Thread

Happy about the Redskins win.  A few thoughts though.

- Haslett needs to go.  His inability to make defensive adjustments when a player gets injured (like when Peterson was injured in late 2011, Christian Ponder beat us, baffling).  Today I thought the same would happen as it happens all the time with him.  He was a bad head coach, and is an ineffective coordinator in today's league.

- RG3 looked okay.  Good perhaps, definitely not great.  His plays were more spurred on by the Bears not having a good defense and players getting injured.

- Shannahan is doing his RB shuffle again.  Like he always does.  It sucks, because Morris is the best RB on the team.  Any team would be lucky to have him.

The refs blew the call during Jets/Pats OT, seriously no pushing your own teammate during a field goal attempt? The push did not affect the miss FG what so ever, and the push was through the gap and not even against an offensive lineman. Why can O line push a RB at line of scrimmage for extra yardage.

Edit: Yep blown call, according to NFL Rule Book (confirmed by Tom Ferrara)
Rule: Team B players can not push teammates on line of scrimmage into the offensive formation.

Team B players are players lined up Behind the O Line, and clearly Jones and the guy he pushed were BOTH lined up at line of scrimmage......so call was blown.

I think Helu got all those plays because they were running no huddle and he just happened to be in. Rushing Morris in and out would be counter productive, although my fantasy team is glaring at Shanny and Helu right now.

I didn't expect the Ravens to be the Greatest Show on Turf or anything, but is it too much to ask for competance from the offense?

EDIT: I place this blame squarely on the offense. The defense wasn't stifiling, but they held the Steelers under 20 points.

Despite the last play and the loss, Case Keenum looked really good for the Texans. We might not see Matt Schaub for the rest of the year.

Gotta watch what I say on the interwebs because Obama will come find me but this Denver defense is a joke and needs to be dropped in a ditch, thats on fire

Sam Bradford is our for the season with a torn ACL. Hopefully the Rams can find someone who doesn't suck as bad as Bradford. (The Tebow talk is fun only because Tebow still has more playoff wins than Bradford.)

Don't forget about the Giants!

This season has been totally stress free. Is this what being a Browns fan is like?
All the browns fans I know of personally have a persecution complex, so you aren't there yet.

Definitely should have been on cmon man.

It's not hard to have it when even fans of 0-6 teams talk shit about you constantly.

I've never understood the need to talk shit about any other team's fans.
I was just taking a jab at how awful the Browns have been historically (not their fans who are some of the best in the league). I'd actually like to see the Browns win a Super Bowl one of these days. I think the city of Cleveland would just shut down completely.

Giants looked pretty awful last night even though they won but hey, if they beat the Eagles (possible) and the Redskins lose to the Broncos (definitely happening) and the Lions beat the Cowboys (probably more than 50% chance of happening) then the Giants will go into the bye only 2 games out with 8 to play and the Raiders up next. This can happen LOL!

I wouldn't say historically since they're one of the most storied franchises in the league with eight championships pre-Super Bowl with a QB, RB, and coach that are amongst the best of all-time at their positions. They were also quite good in the 80s.

Joe Thomas has the best quote about what would happen if they won a Super Bowl:

“I try to talk to the young guys and let them know how important this team is to the city. We could be legends if we bring this organization back to where it was a couple decades ago or even win a Super Bowl. You’d never buy another drink, never buy another dinner the rest of your life if you won a Super Bowl here.”

Jason Campbell is the new starter for the Browns. I agree with the move because Brandon Weeden seemed to show no desire to work on his flaws and become a better quarterback, as he seemed content to just continue playing like he was still a college QB. I lost a lot of respect for him as the QB after this last game for that reason. I don't see Jason Campbell changing much of anything right away with Kansas City as their next opponent.

Amadola and Talib both practiced today, so good chance they will play vs Miami this weekend.

^ He stuck his chest out. Was an idiotic move. It's let the people playing basketball that stick an elbow out when someone is coming through a screen. It just looks obvious.

Exactly. It was a dumb move. A smart player doesn't give the officials the opportunity to throw lame flags like that. The play was over, and he wasn't even going that hard, so it isn't even like his momentum could not be stopped.

I think that was a good win for Carolina, despite Tampa not being decent.  It was a game they HAD to have, which was probably their first all season in my opinion, and they got it.  I hope they take this extra time to prepare and study extra hard for their home game against Atlanta.  I think that game will show where both teams realistically are in the league, since Carolina seems to be the aggregate middle ground team this year between good and bad.

I know, a defensive player (who let up BTW) actually heading toward a QB....he should've got 3 flags.
Way to completely miss the point. Glad the two after you got it.

Agreed. I think they can be a playoff team this year. In their division, Atlanta seems to be down and Tampa's horrid. In the conference, the West is going to get one Wild Card spot (either Seattle or San Fran). That leaves Detroit/Green Bay/Chicago (though I think they're done without Cutler) and Dallas/Philly left to compete. Would be pretty nice to make the playoffs again.

Weeden is 30. He is what he is at quarterback. Playing his style for so long I don't believe he can improve much. It's good the Browns got Lombardi. Getting rid of Trent and is not bothering to salvage Weeden looks a good step to improving that team.

College and two years in the NFL is that long of a time?

It's obvious that he can't improve much now since he hasn't really gotten any better since his first game last year. Hindsight is 20/20.

Actually he played for the Raiders last year but was released during preseason this year due to struggling with the Raiders. To be fair I can't fault you for forgetting that since the Raiders is like a black hole that sucks the life out of you.

Also that's great news about Amandola and Talib. Pats need both of them on the field. I feel at least had Talib been available for last week's game against the Jets I think that alone would of been a game changer. Hopefully he'll be a wrecking force against Miami's offense.

He said Carter last played for New England in 2011, which is true. He didn't say that was the last place he ever played.

Hmmm, in all fairness, most people would read the way he phrased that and assume means it is the last time he played. I did, at first.

He's 30 years old, though. It's not like he lived in a vacuum while he was pursuing his career in baseball. It's not the same as a guy in his earlier 20's with a couple of years of professional experience.

I was going to say the exact same thing. The mentality behind that crap is "Hehe...I'm going to send the QB a little extra message." That shit isn't necessary and it isn't a "part of football". The defense shouldn't be allowed to knock the QB down just because that's the expectation. This is the nonsense that leads to later and later hits. Give them an inch and so on. If you don't want a flag, don't be fucking retarded.

um the original post i quote said he shouldn't even have been around the QB. I responded to that and the two after me missed that. Try and keep up.

He was dumb to hit the QB but it is equally dumb saying a Defensive lineman shouldn't be near a QB. GET IT?

I really don't think it was too much to expect Brandon Weeden to have learned from Brian Hoyer that getting the ball out quickly and not waiting in the pocket for five minutes for somebody to get open like he's still in college. That was really the one thing he should've taken from Brian Hoyer's success and worked on during that time off, but he learned nothing from being benched. I don't see how any QB could be too old to work on that aspect of their game.

The Patriots look terrible vs Dolphins, on Def and Offense. I never seen Brady look this bad before, might be time to bring in Mallet.
Amazing how Brady can just turn it around. In Brady we trust.

This is the worst 5-2 team in the league right now. I don't know how, and I won't complain, but Pats just find ways to win.

I think you just hit the nail on the head. The Patriots don't play well for long stretches of games, and you begin to wonder how they ever win, but then they just play great in these spurts, and it is quite enough.

I understand the penalty on the Miami defensive player for batting the ball but that is killer for it to be 10 yards (from the spot of the foul) AND an automatic first down and really changed that drive.

The pass interference earlier in the game against Miami was really a phantom call. I didn't see anything on that I'd call and it kept that Patriot drive alive but ultimately only cost Miami 3 points.

But outside a few brilliant plays Brady has looked rough this year. Most of his passes are behind, low, etc.
