Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V5! You can find link to past threads at the bottom of this post. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 10/28
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

What have I stumbled onto?!? Anyway, yeah L4D is certainly more polished and has more going on but KF just has a better community despite its limited gameplay.

I think Big Picture mode's a cool feature—one I'll probably never find any use for on my own, but where I can easily imagine enjoying someone else's. Kinda like nipples.

L4D/2 is a completely different beast from KF and Payday because its primary mode is one 4-man team versus another 4 man team—intensely competitive—and the latter two just have survival against waves of AI. KF and Payday also require perk-grind time to get the most enjoyment out of them; L4D rewards a skilled player right off the bat. But all 3 games are good at what they do.

Since L4D2 came out, the community has been winnowed down to mostly pros and trolls. It's a lot harder to find decent (both in terms of humanity and competency) random players. One of the first Steam groups I made, L4DBFF, was mostly my former clanmates but also people I'd met randomly who could be counted on to play a whole game on either side without ragequitting. We peaked at nearly 80 members, but people move on to other games.

I really don't know.
This is a sort of out of nowhere question, but I have the retail version of the first Company of Heroes game installed right now, and got the steam version on the Humble THQ bundle.

Is there ANY benefit to me uninstalling the retail CoH and installing the steam version? It's not like OF or ToV have to be installed over top of the first game, so that's obviously not an issue. Does anyone know if there's any issues with online play between retail and steam or patch issues or any difference between the two?
Having it on steam would be easier since you wouldn't have to worry about installing the patches correctly with the retail version. Last I knew the CoH there were a lot of patches that had to be installed individually and in the correct order.

Totally joking
Apparently, the official free web version of Monopoly has online multiplayer, while the paid version on steam does note.
Reminds me of the one guy who'd come to the monthly regional LAN party when those were a thing 10 years ago and just play single player games all day, away from the family. I think there was a period when someone or a small group were showing up and playing computer Monopoly every month too.
L4D is a more polished game without any doubt, but Killing Floor is a game that really hooked me and kept me coming back for more. Part of it is the aforementioned "community" piece of the equation. Namely that KF is generally a pretty friendly co-op experience, while L4D has become highly competitive and obnoxious if you don't

A) Understand every nuance of the level and game and;
B) Know people playing on the server

Killing Floor also, in my opinion, does one thing absolutely right: guns and shooting. The KF guns all look and feel great.
Intriguing, because I agree with this 100%, except with the names reversed.

They usually launch at 10-10:30 EST. Sometimes they launch an hour early or an hour later than that, so those are the best times to check. The bundle will DEFINITELY launch this week. They have to if they want to launch the Xmas bundle later this month.
What the hell is up w/ Rockstar?

Is there some kind of timed exclusivity agreement w/ Sony (PS3) & Microsoft (X360) so they don't bring it to the PC for a few years or something?

How well or poorly did GTA4 PC and EFLC PC + Max Payne 3 PC + LA Noire PC sell?
I thought all of those were great (provided you had the system to run them, of course).
{shrug}
Not really sure what's going on with the lack of a RDR PC port. In the past they did some limited time exclusives. I remember clearly GTA:SA had a 6-month exclusive on PS2. Which imo, is plenty long for exclusivity (much longer and well, it will be forgotten or just "old").

When you re-roll, pick a high luck attribute, as you go along try to find items that boost your luck: charms, necklaces, teddy bears, bazookas.

Don't neglect your Indie Dev social link, either.

At this point, they probably need to launch within the next 48 hours if they want to launch the next bundle before the Steam Holiday sale starts. If they end up launching the Xmas bundle 2.0 a day or two after the Holiday sales starts, they'll just get lost in the shuffle.

Any one play Tiny and Big: Grandpa's Leftovers, I saw in on a Giant Bomb Quick Look a while back and have been interested. Now I'm tempted to buy it at 75% off.
Gamefly has Transcripted for $1 (90% off, steam key). A twin-stick shooter with a bit of match-3. Quite favorable metacritic reviews.
Thanks for the heads-up. Wish I'd read the next few posts before buying, though. Could have saved twenty cents. And I really wanted that ivory back-scratcher, too...

Sounds like someone's been eating from those burrito trucks that everyone on the Amazon thread is talking about.

That...That's just not funny. An "Anal Wake" killed my father. I....I don't want to talk about it.

Alienware gave out demo codes for Transcripted several months ago. I played through the two demo levels and found it to be decent. It's basically a twin-stick arena shooter like Geometry Wars mixed with a "match three colored orbs in a string" puzzler like Luxor, with some light RPG elements added in. It has an okay medical-based story and the designs are crisp for being minimal and somewhat abstract. The gameplay can get hectic as you fight off attacking organisms while matching colors, but happily enough the whole field is shown.

I wanted to play more, but didn't like it enough for the retail price. At $1 (or 80 cents) it's definitely something everyone should check out.

I played a bit of Transcripted and I can see the potential. Gamefly has some compelling Steam deals now and again.

Also, yes, I saw "Anal Wake" and tittered slightly.

Yes, it was good that you and your family were able to put this tragedy... behind you.

Other than the fact that they're prime indie bundle candidates not really. I'd grab them both if if weren't for that and my massive backlog.
Damnit! You just had to point that out. I liked the robot, but now I see the NBA player.
Delayed response here but...

I had this exact revelation about 2 weeks ago and I felt very stupid immediately afterwards. It freaks me out to look at it now.

The PC version of Geometry Wars lacks analog control for the ship movement. Even when using an analog stick, like the ones on a 360 controller, ship movement is all or nothing. It makes exact movement a bit of a challenge when you have to take everything at full speed. Kind of ruined the game for me.

If anyone just got a random steam request, that was probably me. I finally decided to get over my weird social anxiety related rule regarding not adding people I don't actually know on Steam. So... sorry about that, feel no harm in declining.
