CAGiversary!

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V7! You can find link to past threads at the bottom of this post. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

Since the V6 thread, we've decided to leave regular minor sales out of the OP. This post will keep track of major sales (Summer sale, etc.), Steam deals available through other sellers (like Amazon), Preorder deals, and Group Buys.

I would still greatly appreciate help from you folks at home in keeping this smaller-scale OP up-to-date. This is a Wiki post so anyone can contribute. Wiki instructions:
Thanks for your help! If you notice a sale has ended, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see something does need to be added, then kindly add it to the list.

Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.

Steam Sales - Updated 5/20

CAG Threads Featuring Steam Games on Sale Elsewhere - Updated 1/9

Preorder Deals - Updated 1/10
Group Buy Deals - Updated 1/9/13

Free Stuff - List needs updating with F2P games!
There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

Steam's explanation and list of Steam-activatable keys

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card. The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Just beat Bioshock Infinite... The game did seem drawn out in parts and the animations when someone was talking seemed a bit off. However, the last couple hours or so of the game made it 100% worth it.

And, what made Two Worlds 1 and 2 such a rip-off...?
{Eyebrow raised}

Well, if it's the DRM - then I understand where you're going w/ it. :p

While Two Worlds 1 was decent (even despite its numerous flaws); Two Worlds 2 (base game) just was such a much better game - and a major improvement over the original in every way.
Even though I have Two Worlds 2: Pirates of the Flying Fortress expansion, I still ain't touched it...
(SIDE NOTE: I bought Two Worlds 2 GOTY just to get the expansion from Gamersgate when it was cheap, since I already owned Two Worlds 2 import in a box from Gogamer.)

You guys just pile on sometimes. Ouch. This is what I get for shunning Coconut Queen.

All I was wondering about was the drop rate of the discount. I should have phrased it as: Will Endless Space be old enough during the Summer Sale to get 75% off? Just asking for an opinion...

What hard drive is best for VMs and games in terms of value and reliability? The only HDD brand that I've ever owned were all Seagates, my current 2tb drive is 80% full so I'm looking for another drive. What do you guys use?

Good question.
I really...don't know, hehe.

In my previous PC, I had all Seagates for internal drives (for running games on them).
Had no problems w/ them.

My current PC has TWO WD Black Cavair at 2TB w/ 7200 RPM and 64MB Cache for internals (for running games).
For externals (for backing up stuff - like say game installer files), I have all Seagates (of different sizes).

I've heard lots of horror stories w/ hard drives of all kinds and really ain't had many of those kinds of problems (of hard drives failing, going bad, etc), so...

I have 3x WD 2TB Caviar Black (which are all 7200 RPM) and a Sammy 830 256 GB, and for externals I have 3x WD USB 3.0 Passports (and various others).

All I know is my gut says maybe.

At this price (well, Jake's price), I've decided I'll finally bite on it. The difference between 66% and 75% is largely immaterial and I figure I'll play it sometime before July so I'm happy to buy now.

It comes down to the age-old CAG motto: will you play it before the next sale? If not, wait.

The only thing that keeps me away from Western Digital is the price. A 2TB Seagate is about $80-100. A 2tb WD Black is $174, for that price, I could buy a 4TB Seagate. Are WD drives really that much better.

BTW, I'm using an OCZ Vertex 4 as a boot drive with Windows and all non-game apps.

@AShuff
That's a good question b/c last week, I saw NewEgg have a 3TB Seagate internal for around $120.
I ain't had a Seagate for an internal, since I bought my new PC.

EDIT:
I really ain't much issues w/ WD or Seagates, so....
{Shrug}

I have had a Maxtor die on me before, though...

Three of my WD drives from ~2002 are still 100% working. And they come with a 5 year warranty.

It's up to you. If you're only using it for gaming, and don't care if the hard drive dies, then you might as well get a Seagate.

I replaced an older 2.5" Hitachi with a WD Scorpio Black and the difference was astonding but Hitachi drives aren't really made for speed or reliablity so that's probably a terrible comparison.

The Two World III remark was just a random thought, not intended to be connected to the BioSchlock knockoff comment. (Besides it's closer to Skyram than BioSchlock.)

On hard drives I've had good luck with Western Digitals (excluding the shitty Green drives). Hitachis have also been good to me. There's been a lot of consolidation and buyouts so now days it's mostly Seagate VS Western Digital. The problems nowdays are more model specific than anything else. (Unlike say, I would advise never buying a Maxtor.) Samsungs seem to be okay, but their controller algorithms were unrefined when I last looked at fine grained transfer rate plots from their drives. (WD & Seagate looked as expected.)

I think that most of the whinning you're seeing these days is from the small number of people who statistically get bad drives being disproportionally vocal.

Worth noting - the Maxtor lasted a good number of years (at least over 5 years on a REALLY OLD PC), so...
{shrug}

But, yeah - I'd mainly go w/ WD Black Cav or Seagate, these days...

EDIT:

We talking about Singularity? :p

Is Cavier blue a no go? I don't mind paying extra for additional speed or reliability but I am still a CAG so the gains better be proportional with the price increase.

You have an SSD for the fast stuff. In comparison to the SSD boost, differences between spinning hard drives is largely nitpicking.

I'd suggest keeping an eye out for a WD Red or Blue (on sale they run about the same as Seagates).

I fucking hated the sound of Maxtors. *all* Maxtors. CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK I could hear them from 40 feet away. (Toshiba and Fujitsu laptop drives are clickly for laptop drives. Seagates aren't that great on sound either.)

It's 91% off on Bioshucks and XMen: EU. ^_~

Not the genuine Bioschlock.

How do you feel about WD Black Cav's?
I have TWO of them WD Black Cav at w/ 7200 RPM and 64 MB Cache.

EDIT:
I messed up early and said I had 2 WD Black Cav's at 2TB (each).
I meant 2TB total (they both are one TB each).

Alright, thanks for the input. I was pretty sure that it was moreso brand loyalty and preference but some people (AKA the minority) preach that one is better than another so it's hard to get an accurate image.

I *like* the WD Black Caviar. If you don't have/not-gonna-have an SSD in your system, then having one for your system/app drive is good.

However the problem is that WD is charging a large premium for their Black drives, but the performance difference for the black drives is small in comparison to SSDs. With the current (and dropping) SSD prices for real performance get an SSD and add a spinner or three for mass storage.

My gaming PC is 4 years old so I never entertained putting an SSD in it when I built it. It has a 1TB WB Caviar Black (System/Apps/Data), a 2TB 7200 RPM Hitachi (Steam), and a (shudder) 2 TB WD Green (Bulk Storage: Video, Audio, Archive). I really need to add another 2 TB to it soon. (My two newer laptops have SSDs: MBA has a 256 GB Samsung, Dell has a 160 GB Intel 320.)

I tolerate CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK if I'm causing it, usually -- clacky keyboards drive me batty. If anything (or anyone) else it causing it I cannot stand it.
For me, it's more about how Arcen Games makes it too easy to pirate their games. I think there's a Steam keygen for all of their games. That alone makes me not want to support them.. It can't be that hard for them to use more complex keys.

Okay, w/ all this SSD talk - which I know very little about - you're so talking over my head w/ all this stuff, such as spinners...

How much performance difference is b/t say the WD Black vs. Blue vs. Green vs. any other bloody colors?

For HDD, if you cant afford a SSD, get a WD Black for OS/apps/games. You can get whatever brand/model for movies/music/data. There is a pretty significant performance jump from normal drives to a WD Black, and another jump from the WD Black to the quality SSDs.

Nice. Thanks for the info. In for 20.
For those interested in Endless Space, JakeNome is selling:

For most modern day computers a SSD is prob the biggest performance upgrade you can make.
It will make almost everything significantly faster except for games that run almost all server side (WoW / Diablo 3) But pretty much the operating system and any game you install on it should see big improvements.

SSDs will give you a massive boost in load times, just not FPS. Bethesda games especially benefit GREATLY from SSDs. I have New Vegas and Skyrim on my Crucial, and the difference is night and day.

Yea no FPS boost unfortunately, but for me whenever I install a new component on my computer I want it to FEEL faster, and usually this doesn't happen with small upgrades. Going from a normal hard drive to SSD, I made the switch about a year ago and holy shit is this thing so much faster. I'm never going back to a normal drive =)
Blue is slower. Good for, say, media storage (though I still use Black for that...)
HDD spindle speeds are pretty trivial when compared to bus speeds and the actual caching algorithms used to store information. The difference is minimal and nothing your brain couldn't fill in between still pictures. Other PC components are more important than the RPMs of your hard drive. I run Maya and ZBrush on my 5400rpm WD Scorpio Blue without a problem.

The only advice I have is to always get WD. Out of all the hard drives I've ever owned, from Fujitsu to Toshiba, my WDs have never failed. I've had corruptions and unreadable sectors aplenty with every other drive, but I dropped my 640GB WD external that I bought in 2008 from six feet while it was on and I didn't lose anything. And it still works. In comparison, I had a Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm internal that I used for two years in high school; I had a naked picture of someone I knew saved on it, and that somehow became corrupted in a bad sector after the first year. So whenever someone who wasn't me used the computer, they got an eyeful of amateur softcore porn. I couldn't delete it and had to reformat and lose everything.
I had a naked picture of someone I knew saved on it,.
Finally, something pertinent to my interests

Also: Bioshucks? That the best you folks got? At LEAST make it Biosharks, if not Bilesharks. Bioshucks just doesn't doesn't ring forth off the tongue.
SSDs will give you a massive boost in load times, just not FPS. Bethesda games especially benefit GREATLY from SSDs. I have New Vegas and Skyrim on my Crucial, and the difference is night and day.
QTF - I keep the games I am currently playing on one of two SSDs and my OS/programs on another and have a 1TB for everything else and crap games that don't need the SSD treatment.
Some games can get an FPS boost if they don't properly load textures into memory - SWTOR for instance. But generally it's rare - it's all load times mostly.

I feel load times for most games are fine as they are on a 7200rpm drive. I mean anything is fantastic compared to consoles and vacuum cleaner DVD drives.
I also feel that HD's as of late have come a long way in terms of noise. A maxtor from 8 years ago. omg. drive me f'ing batty. Does skyrim *really* take that long to load on a HD?

I just picked up a 3tB seagate 7200 rpm for my games and its nearly silent. an odd click on bootup and once every hour and thats it. Performs nicely in my opinion too. Just as fast as my Samsung Spinpoint

I was so sensitive to HD noise that I picked up the universal Samsung Spinpoint F1 1TB for my main awhile back. Buying the Seagate 3TB sight unseen due to the need for space and a sale was a gamble, but it turned out fine. I might be getting less OCD in the last couple of years too.

Another thing. Buy the biggest HD before the price explodes in terms of size. For example. 4TB is very expensive. 3TB is 20$ than 2TB. etc. 1tB is a total ripoff.
HDD spindle speeds are pretty trivial when compared to bus speeds and the actual caching algorithms used to store information. The difference is minimal and nothing your brain couldn't fill in between still pictures.
Huh? I never said Blues (or even Greens) couldn't handle video playback. I only use Black for everything, because it's better parts with better warranty. I've had a total of 1 hard drive fail before I upgraded. Out of ~15+ years. *knocks on wood*

Ok, here's my setup. I use SSD as much as I can, but I dual boot, so I have both Windows 8 and Debian on it. Secondary to that, I have 3x 2TB.

Two of those is for storing my media (which I currently have just under 2 TB of, so I added one for the future). I don't want to lose my media, ever, so it's backed up, and on as good of a drive as I can get (short of RAID with lots of redundancies).

The last 2TB drive is split in half. One half is for my Debian /home and swap. The other half is shared between Linux and Windows 8 (so it holds Steam overflow and install files, for example). This one is a WD Black too so I can run programs off it when I don't want to move it to the SSD.

Which is why I said you don't really need Blacks for media, but I'd be devastated to lose the entire drive, so I pay extra for some comfort.
