I don't get the whole complaint about the DI trailer - plenty of other games (and especially FPSs) have trailers that show absolutely no gameplay and are just a bunch of pretty CGI visuals. Trailers by definition are meant to hype you up for something in a short amount of time, if you think they are an accurate reflection of the game *coughWatch_dogscough* then you're gonna have a bad time.
B/c that
DI backwards trailer was NOT representative of the game. Many CGI trailers - they still are actually very indicative of what you're going to be getting for a game. They will pepper in elements, things, and whatnot - that are representative of new game features, game mechanics, game-worlds, and things of that nature. And yes - a lot of times, you have to actually be looking for this stuff, in the CGI trailers - b/c they're not telling you this stuff straight-up. They don't often show all or a lot of actual gameplay-footage in a trailer for a game (unfortunately).
Dead Island backwards trailer did NONE of that. The Dead Island backwards trailer gave me the impression that this will be a very personal, heavily story-driven + character-driven game - which, in the end, it certainly was NOT.
Luckily, I watched the
GiantBomb QuickLook WAY before I got the game + read plenty of reviews before-hand - so, I basically realized that I was getting into a "Borderlands 1 like ARPG - but instead w/ a melee-combat focus; mostly zombies will be enemies; & a huge open-world on the resort of Hanoi."
I was absolutely fine w/ that - since I knew what the hell I was getting into ahead of time, before actually getting the game. I like zombies and ARPG's - so, I knew this would still be way up my alley, even despite the (only) disappointment of the story-depth + character-depth feeling lacking.
I still loved Dead Island (original).
EDIT:
Nothing in those poser "dramatic" 2deep4u zombie games has ever managed to answer the question though... Who do you voodoo, bitch?
If you're addicted to Dead Island's actual combat, the loot-craze that are in most ARPG's, and loot-upgrading ARPG elements - then you just been voodoo'ed.
I know when I played Dead Island 1 - I certainly was. It was addictive and tons of fun.
