I can't imagine it being better than 480p.
Well, it all depends on what format the original film was shot in. It was from the early 90's, so it WASN'T shot digitally. Digital photography wasn't even a thing back then. A digital camera would have been far more expensive than an analog one in those days, and not nearly as high quality. So the original film for Night Trap was either recorded on actual film, or with VHS/Betamax. (camcorder-style) FMV was a bit of a fad at the time, and they actually got a known actress for the production, so I'm guessing it was probably shot on film.

If they have access to film negatives, they will likely be able to pull quite a bit of detail out of them. Films shot digitally, usually from the early-mid 00's, tend to suffer the most from up scaling up the resolution. Older films that are shot on actual film stock scale better, there's usually enough detail in the original film. Scanning that original film to a digital format can allow for successful improvement in video quality.

The rest of the graphics in the game are almost an after-thought. I've seen the menu graphics on Night Trap. I could easily create an improved high-resolution version of those in an afternoon. The bar is set really low on that topic. Any amount of effort on the developers part will be able to provide an improved, high-resolution interface.

Creating a high-resolution modern re-make of Night Trap is actually fairly easy. The game itself was not very complicated. It's mainly just a matter of replicating the logic, and generating some high-resolution art assets. But the majority comes down to the video re-mastering. If they're smart, they'll squeeze as much quality out of the video as they can, and then apply a randomly dynamic filter to the video in-game that simulates some of the visual artifacts commonly associated with VHS from the era. (so that it's not part of the video itself, and can be adjusted on-the-fly)

Vita, Switch, Wii U, PS4, PS4, 360, GameCube, and SNES versions, with 3 cover variants each! /s
As irate as you seem about the cover variants, you do realize Night Trap only has one actual variant, right? The blue and red covers are reversible. The yellow one will be obtainable *for free* from our rewards program. You'll either be able to get the cover sheet by itself for a low amount or the fully packaged sealed game for a higher amount - so two options to get that cover variant absolutely free.

It was most likely shot on something like VHS, so 480p is about as good as you can get. I can't imagine them using film and editing down to VHS for this.

I got my copy of Strafe in today and I was planning on keeping it sealed but it sounds like the disc is loose in the case. Argh

Does Limited Run do exchanges or something for cases like this? Never had it happen to me before and I've ordered dozens of things through them.

I don't understand the appeal of Night Trap? It's a godawful FMV game with ugly low-res video and poor replayability. Is it nostalgia that makes the game appealing, or just that it's so bad it's funny? I skipped the Sega CD and 3DO because those systems were centered around ugly FMV games, which to me have also aged very poorly.
It was only ugly because of the limitations of the hardware back in the 90s. Something people seem to have missed is that this is a remaster - not a port. The video has been recaptured from the highest quality source available and is leaps and bounds better than any previous release of Night Trap. Yes, it's only DVD quality, but that's still way better than what was previously on the market.

I think to a lot of people Night Trap has the same appeal as a B-movie. It's actually kind of jaw-dropping how they pulled this game off - as there are several feeds of video always flowing and characters move seamlessly between those feeds. Watch this video and maybe you'll at least have some technical appreciation for the game:

Actually no. The original "shoot" for Night Trap was handled like a movie, so it is likely that it was done using actual film. And the editing actually WAS done on VHS, as the game itself was originally developed for a system called the NEMO. This was a video-game system being developed by Hasbro, and was based on VHS technology. (it would use VHS cartridges to play games, and would allow for multiple video tracks to play simultaneously) It was only later after the NEMO got canned before release that Night Trap was ported over to the Sega CD. The edited footage had to be down-converted to VHS, as that was the format that the game was originally intended for.

The previews they've provided shows video that is quite clearly sharper than 480p. Also, the actual possible resolution of VHS is 480i, not 480p. The analog video recording formats of that time were mainly interlaced. Attempting to convert that video to 480p usually results in undesirable pixelating.

I'm a fan of FMV games, so I'm interested in Night Trap as it was one of the first titles produced strictly for the home console market. Due to the nature of FMV titles, the Sega CD received many of them at the time, due to having a CD drive that allowed for the bigger size video files to be used.

Sadly, while the device saw many of the best arcade FMV titles of the time(Dragons Lair, Space Ace, Time Gal, Ninja Hiyate, Road Avenger, Etc.), the quality was beyond terrible due to the compression used. So where most of the arcade games, saw other releases on better hardware over the years, Night Trap didn't fair as well.

The 3DO had probably the best version, but considering how many bought that console, it's probably the best version, that no one has played. So for me, I'm looking forward to finally playing this title closer to how it was originally intended. But I'm well aware of how the game works and what is involved, and it is for sure not a title for everyone.

Take 20 seconds and do this. And save this link. If you buy PS4 games, get used to loose discs and get used to fixing them like this.

Yeah, the original film was 35mm not VHS. Granted, 35mm wasn't exactly spending big on the best film possible at the time. And even with an HD remaster of the original film, we are still going to be talking about a fairly low-budget shoot from 1987 with production values far more in line with TV than film. And NOTHING is going to change the cheesy performances, no getting around that. But it is likely that this re-make will at least not have tiny, grainy video that you can barely see and is riddled with compression artifacts.

I'm interested in getting a copy of Night Trap purely for the historical fascination with its bizarre development and influence over the game industry. (partially responsible for the formation of the ESRB, whether fairly or not)

That worked! Super easy too!

I have around 30 PS4 games and never had this happen to me, guess I was just lucky.

Thanks!

Not sure what you mean about 35mm not being the best possible film at the time. Unless you were shooting something on a wide format like IMAX or 70mm, the industry standard was 35mm for feature films up until the early to mid 2000s when digital started to replace it. That's not to say that the production values of Night Trap were necessarily up to the standards of a 100 million dollar blockbuster film, but 35mm film is easily capable of delivering equivalent resolutions far in excess of 4K depending on how the transfer is done.

You must be pretty lucky. LRG PS4 releases are the ONLY ones I've been getting lately without loose discs (possibly because of the box). Every other PS4 game I've ordered lately (whether from Amazon, Best Buy or someone else) has been a floater. Every. Single. One.

VHS is like 200i at best. Complete shit.

35mm you could get 8k out of it. Even old 35mm film is still far superior resolution than digital formats. You're talking molecule sized pixels. Digital is just about convenience for editing, distribution, and playback and not having anything to wear out, while still being "good enough".

Yep, I've been getting tons of floaters lately, especially from Best Buy. I've also noticed that they've started shipping my games out the Thursday night before the release Tuesday meaning they are in transit for 3-5 days before they reach me as opposed to the 1-2 days before. Not sure if there's a correlation, but it certainly can't be helping.

That wasn't just about Night Trap or LRG. I'm poking fun at the entire industry and this snowballing collector bubble. From escalating collector edition prices to multiple variants on multiple platforms including end of life platforms. Just getting out of hand all around.

Can't even browse games on places like Amazon anymore because you'll get to Far Cry 5 or Assassin's Creed Origins and you'll have to skip like 2 pages just to get to the next game.

Vita is this rotting log in the road. I'm not looking forward to what will be massively exploited PS4/Vita/Switch overlap with upcoming games between now and whenever Vita production is officially ended. Vita needed to be shut down before Switch was a thing.

You should definitely bring this up at the next Nintony board meeting.

Broken Age (Vita) arrived in the mail today. I can't remember the last time I got an LRG release that quickly.
We're pretty delayed this release as well so I'm glad that arrived fast. We were held up on some ESRB nonsense with Deemo (had to add ratings via stickers on the shrinkwrap) as well as waiting on the Fangamer Broken Age stuff to arrive.

Can we use our tickets on ESRB stickers? I want to slap them on the previous releases. ;D

Still waiting on Broken Age and Deemo to ship lol
For Deemo, we spent the last two days putting stickers on all 5,000 copies. No copies have shipped yet. The ESRB threatened to fine the developer, literally a week before the sale, if we didn't add stickers to all copies of the game. We had to rush order specialty stickers for the front and back and even then they still didn't arrive until Wednesday.

In any case, we've ALWAYS said shipment could take up to two weeks, so we're still a week out from that.

Thanks for the info. O:)

Which unreleased LRG PS4 game is serialized as "LR-P30" on the spine? Also, what are the serial numbers for Broken Age and Skullgirls?

Out of curiosity, why are ESRB labels needed for this particular release? That's a first for LRG, right?

The developer accidentally paid for a physical rating and when a developer pays for a rating they agree it will be displayed on the packaging (or face hefty fines of up to a million dollars). We had no idea they had paid for a rating until ESRB contacted us out of the blue the Friday before the sale. We were forced to rush order a pile of special cut stickers (they had to be exact sizes) for the front and back. We're now in the process of manually applying those (woof).

Yay Bureaucracy!

my Strafe arrived quick. came in bubble envelope and in a loose disc. last time i had a loose disc was in a bubble envelope too from LRG. i did the disc popping in trick. works well. so far no loose disc from LRG boxes.

Drive Drive Drive is 30, Broken Age is 35. Skullgirls has no spine number until it enters manufacturing.
If you don't mind me asking, why has it taken Drive Drive Drive so long to come out? It seems like its been on your site for a few months now and other games (such as Broken Age) have come and gone since it was listed as coming soon.

Sony took a while to process the paperwork to add it to our account for manufacturing. We were finally able to order it two weeks ago.

My copy of Strafe came in today, damn mail lady slammed the package on my mailbox to open it and when I went to get it, I saw that this time LRG decided to ship it out in a little black mailer this time, the disc is loose. Don't know if it's LRG's packaging fault or the mail lady but it's annoying as hell and I'm trying the trick to fix it but no luck so far :( might have to open this one up.

$5 shipping and it comes in a little bubble mailer?? Come on.

My LRG Strafe was a floater too, and I haven't been able to fix it yet using the technique mentioned in this thread. However the blame doesn't lie with LRG, this is Sony's poorly designed PS4 game cases. Please don't blame LRG for Sony's poor design.

Just so you know, if you buy a PS4 game with any other item, it defaults to being shipped within a box. A single PS4 game comes in the mailer. They also offer a box, and while it cost extra, many people still have floaters arrive within a box. As stated, this is a design flaw of the PS4 game case.

Also, $5 doesn't cover much in regards to shipping, and if you bought several items, they all fall under that flat amount. I've had 99% of my orders shipped in bubble mailers, and not a single item has arrived damaged, but loose disc are not damage, so there isn't much that can be done outside of watching one of the many videos posted here on how to reset the disc. Or open the game and actually play it, which would also solve the issue.

As others have mentioned, we can't stop the loose disc problem and it can happen with any type of packaging (box/bubble mailer/etc). For peace of mind, you can pay an extra $1.99 for boxed shipment, either that or buy 2 games (so long as one is PS4, your order will ship in a box by default).

Got shipping notification yesterday for Deemo.

Ready for Friday. Furi PS4 & Dariusbust Vita.

Bong bong (RZA voice).
My shipping notice came today, and I just set my phone alarm for Friday as well. That $50 for one game is gonna sting for a minute, but I would have paid that to import, so it's all good.

I've heard that Raleigh, North Carolina is a pretty great place for tech companies. Is that still the case?
So long as you're ok with living in a progressive bubble. Educated folks aren't really welcomed just outside of that area. You're elite bastards.

Cheap office space, affordable cost of living, and tons of local gaming companies (Epic, Red Storm/Ubisoft, Insomniac, Boss Key, Imangi, and more) make this a great place to be for the game industry. Other development hubs like San Francisco, New York, Boston, and Seattle have a significantly higher cost of living.

Yeah, I've seen a few here on CAG from the San Fransico area, and Holy ****, I had no idea the cost of living was so high there. I grew up in Los Angeles, so I knew what that was about. And New York is NY, but damn, some of these other places are nuts.
