The Official "PS3 Ebay Scalpers Wall of Shame"
Im kinda shamed to say it but iv actually saved a few pictures to my porn folder ;(
Hmmm... Getting a new idea for a coffee table book on PS3 sellers... Someone should collect these together in a compilation of some sort. I wouldn't limit it to the softcore stuff, though that would be a chapter (or two) ;). You could make chapters based on the various categories (softcore, piles o' PS3s, babies, hard-luck stories, dufuses, people who thought they needed a picture of the actual purchase taking place  - a particularly goofy subset of the regular dufus, etc).

There was one PS3 auction I saw sell for $3000 the other day but it was for a good cause (Dream Factory) so I was glad it did. They advertised it on our local news with all proceeds going to charity. Apparently Nebraska Furniture Mart donated the unit to the charitable organization. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&viewitem=&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ebay.com%3A80%2Fsearch%2Fsearch.dll%3Ffrom%3DR40%26satitle%3D260062519678%2B%26fvi%3D1&item=260062519678&rd=1

The only thing that was odd about the auction was the fact that they were charging $150 to ship the unit. Even if you shipped it next day UPS I don't think it would cost that much.

Hehehe so I just looked for the first time at ebay in like 2 weeks....these scalpers really are getting raped here. It really made my night seeing that most of the auctions were either ending at cost(so after ebay fees they loose money)or were ending way below cost. I actually saw a few ending at like $300-$400 one or two of which had games included. I LOVE IT!

I wonder if there is going to be a flood of people over the next few weeks trying to actually RETURN PS3s to the vendor heh.

I really hope that the "Homer J. Simpsons" out there trying to determine which auction to bid on do so more on the 'chach (sp.?)/choad' invariably behind the camera, and not the stripper chick with a console box/games covering her tits. Focus on your hatred.

You know, if I'm paying thousands of dollars for a PS3, what makes people think I want their naked bodies rubbing all over it. Even if your a hot chick, I still don't want you rubbing you cooch or boobies all over my brand new PS3 that I am paying double retail for. I don't know where you've been.

Below is a prime example. I'm gonna wager 90% of the people buying a PS3 on ebay are dudes. Why would a dude want one that has been subjected to this?...

That's what I was wondering. I wouldn't be surprised if on the 26th during the normal gift return mayhem if retail employees don't see a flood of PS3's coming back.

I know of at least one that was returned for this reason and probably two. Back when I was still searching for a 60GB PS3 my sister called me at work. She said her boyfriend was at BB (around 1:00PM) and saw a customer returning one. The person at the service desk said they were going to check it out and if nothing was wrong resell it. They asked him if he wanted it and he said no but he knew someone that did.

A couple days ago a friend of mine told me he took his system back to Target. They were stunned when they saw what he was bringing back. He said he told them straight up he bought it for profit but he would be lucky to come away with $20 so he was returning it.

It's really sad because I am I Sony fan and want them to succeed but it really seems like a majority of the pre-Christmas buying frenzy has been because of scalpers.

My friends auction (60GB system, Resistance, Madden and extra controller only went for 900.00) So after tax and fees he made like 60.00

Im fucking glad this is happaning to Sony. They did this shit on purpose to create hype and also rushed the release. Besides $600 is too much for a system. They created a house of cards, it deserves to fall.

I don't think Sony is to blame. I blame "Greed" and the people looking to make a quick buck at the expense of others. Sony is just doing their job in promoting their stuff. Its the artificial shortage and demand of these things. With 20,000 auctions ... It is evident that there is not that big a demand.

Yeah, but the untold story here is that the utter collapse of the ebay market for PS3's is NOT a good sign for Sony, no matter how you look at it. While we may not care if the sellers make any more money or not (and it seems most people here hope for "not") the fact that they can barely sell them (plus the anecdotes of PS3's sitting in stores whilst everyone asks about the Wii) is not good for Sony. If you are a Sony fanboy this is bad news. I wanted the PS3 to be successful and was hoping to pick one up in a Costco bundle in the spring. But the lack of an upscaler has cooled me on it somewhat. Now I'm leaning towards a 360 - and with that, the hope that Sony craters so all the good games end up on the Wii and 360. If they fix the upscaler issue then I'll be back on board - simple as that.

What shocks me is how many people held on to their PS3's for sale this week. Not only is ebay flooded but there must be just as many (or more) people who didn't bother to list them and/or are just going to return them (like the people I talked to last night). I said this before as well, but there *will* be a bunch of returns. I'm sure it has already begun, and will probably accelerate of over the next few weeks. So now if you pick up a PS3 at retail you have to wonder if it sat in someone's house for a month while they rubbed various body parts all over it in a vain attempt to boost their sales price .

Oh, ill be one of those returners. I picked up a 20gig from TRU when i was there for a completely different reason and they had one sitting there. Held on to it for a lil while but no one i knew wants it so back it goes.
I just sold my 60gig to someone at work for cost. That was a gamestop preorder(showing up 15 mins before opening) but since i just bought an engagement ring - I could use the money for that instead.

LOL that's a good point. If you're out after Christmas and you find a PS3 on the shelf there's a good chance from one of the ebay morons that had their boobs or other various body parts rubbed all over it. One of the biggest tell tale signs in my opinion is the rapid cooling of PS3 sales on ebay. Correct me if I'm wrong (I really didn't follow it too closely last Christmas) but weren't people still able to make a modest profit off of 360 units well after Christmas??

So now if you pick up a PS3 at retail you have to wonder if it sat in someone's house for a month while they rubbed various body parts all over it in a vain attempt to boost their sales price .

So I guess the smart shopper puts the PS3 box to the 'sniff test', then, hunh?

There are multiple reasons for the (somewhat) surprising lack of eBay demand for these. Let us list them (in no particular order):

1.) The extreme lengths that the launch day campers/linesitters went to. I think this really set the tone for the entire launch window, and it gave others a negative impression of the whole thing, kind of reflexively associating the PS3 with the obsessive and greedy. People just said "I'm not messing with that!" and wrote it off for the holidays.

2.) The 360 was all alone in the 'next gen' arena last year, whether Sony can accept that or not. The eBay demand was much greater for much longer for them as a result.* Now, it's undercutting peoples' need for a PS3 ASAP, as at least some consumers either know there's not much difference currently between what the two are offering, or "Hell, I ain't payin' $600 for that shit when I can get the next best thing for $400!" (Also see: Gears of War and its graphics.)

3.) The Wii. Do I really need to say anything else here?

4.) Just to reiterate, there are now faces to the eBay hoarders, so it's much easier to focus the disdain towards a specific person. The sob stories that even Dr. Phool's audience members would scoff at don't help, either.

5.) The shitty launch lineup. Say what you want about past launch lineups, but even the PS2 had 'first dibs' on the next-gen Madden, a cool and accessible new series called SSX, and Tekken Tag Tournament. It wasn't great, but it felt much fresher than what we've seen thusfar here.

6.) The bad buzz and regrettable soundbytes. It's getting to many consumers one way or another, whether they can/choose to read or not. There will still be plenty of loyalists and ignorant types out there, and they may still come through for Sony in the end, but I think it's pretty clear to everyone that their Yankee-esque stretch of dominance is over. It's also going to take this thing years to reach the magic price point that will get mass market saturation (I'll say $250 and not $200 now, due to the Wii's success and adjusting for inflation).

Did I miss any?

*--Correct me if I'm wrong (I really didn't follow it too closely last Christmas) but weren't people still able to make a modest profit off of 360 units well after Christmas??

Yeah, pretty much. I remember following this on the IGN boards last winter, and I'm pretty sure they were still turning a $100-$200 consistently well into January. They didn't become readily available at retail until some point in March, I can tell you that (not that there were any other games worth playing between DOA4 and G.R.A.W.).

Yes on the 360, as far as I remember (I wasn't involved then either) - though that was a slightly different situation in that it was the only next-gen system at the time. The PS3 not only has the Wii to compete with for "hot item of the season", but the easy availability of the 360. I'm sure MS has made many a sale from the combined price and shortage of PS3's.

From what I remember of the 360, they didn't have quite the price spike at launch that the PS3 did, but the price held steadier and dropped much slower. I think people were able to sell them through Jan. for a $100-$200 profit. I think the initial spike (and hoarding) of the PS3 was caused partly by what happened with the 360 the year before. It was natural to assume it would be the same or even better (for sellers) as the PS3 was in shorter supply and arguably a more anticipated system. Oops...

But, I don't know, I'm really debating now if I should just stop buying more games I'll probably barely play, and just get a PS3 instead (To be honest, my game collection is WAY too saturated with over 660 games, and I'd rather have newer consoles for I can play other games).

The PS3 launch has been a poor launch. I bought the PS3 to play Resistance and Blu-Ray Movies. I have a lot of friends that can not believe that Sony did not release a fighting game at launch. Also people question why sony did not release a exclusive racing game.

Im sorry but thats just pathatic. Its hard for me to seriously consider you a gamer whenever you say you wouldnt really even be one without Sony. First they arnt that great of a developer....but second even if they were as good as say Nintendo it would be sad because there are still 100s of other great companies out there making awsome games.

As for a fighter, the truth is that the only genre Sony never develops games in is fighters, and I could understand why (It's pretty difficult to make a good fighter these days). Usually there's a Tekken at launch, but Namco didn't have Tekken 6 ready unfortunately.

I think it is hard to count Ridge Racer as a exclusive Racer when the 360 version has graphics that have more detail.
Im sorry but thats just pathatic. Its hard for me to seriously consider you a gamer whenever you say you wouldnt really even be one without Sony.
I've played a game for over 1300 days in a row. I play a game for 1-8 hours every single day.
First they arnt that great of a developer....
In your opinion. I happen to love (some of these games were brought stateside by other publishers, but they are SCEI or SCEE games) the Ratchet & Clank series, Jak series, Ape Escape series, Sly series, Twisted Metal series, Wipeout series, Hot Shots Golf series, Gran Turismo series, Loco Roco, ATV Offroad Fury series, God of War, ICO/SotC, Frequency/Amplitude, Tomba series, PaRappa The Rapper series, Wild Arms series, Arc The Lad series (except End of Darkness), Legaia series, Colony Wars series, Jet Moto series, War of the Monsters, Downhill Domination, Jumping Flash series, Alundra, Sky Gunner, GhostHunter, Primal, Killzone, Syphon Filter (except for the 3rd and Omega Strain), Kinetica, Dark Cloud series, Bombastic/Devil Dice, Hot Shots Golf series, Crash during the PS1 era, Spyro during the PS1 era, etc. And what really helps me get into these games is PSU continues sending me demos of many of their games. I'll admit there are some I didn't like, but I ended up liking many of them, causing me to buy the game (or greatly consider it) when I had no interest to begin with (like God of War, Primal, and others). What I like about SCE the most is that they develop variety (a very big one) with quality games in most every genre, instead of just a few. I know many who feels Sony makes the best games too (the same argument could be said about Nintendo and MS games).
but second even if they were as good as say Nintendo it would be sad because there are still 100s of other great companies out there making awsome games.
I personally feel Nintendo's first party games are greatly overrated (especially Zelda, Mario ever since SNES to an extent, Pokemon, Animal Crossing, etc.). I've bought and rented many of them, and I didn't find many of them all that great. There were some I liked, but just no where near as many as Sony. The reason I liked Gamecube and GBA were because of 3rd party games, not Nintendo's games. Although I definitely plan to get a Wii, I'm just not as excited about it due to just not being much of a Nintendo fan (I even like MS Games Studios games better even).
I think it is hard to count Ridge Racer as a exclusive Racer when the 360 version has graphics that have more detail.
Sony probably figured it was exclusive because it ended with a 7, not a 6. But the PS3 version has more features, like more car customization (like with engines and stuff). The very first game I'd buy with my PS3 would be RR7.

Mana Knight I understand and agree that Sony makes alot of great games(or atleast own alot of companies that do). I used to be called a Sony fanboy all the time for defending them against people that said they had no good games. But it doesnt change the fact nor does your 1,000s of hours on any given game that if you can just quit gaming because one company leaves the industry....you aint much of a gamer....and deffintly are a fanboy. Im sorry but you named all those great games but I can sit and name 1,000s of others like Oblivion, Final Fantasy, Klonoa, Pokemon, Halo etc etc etc.

And I never argued that Nintendo was the best developer ever(though its hard to not say they are way better then Sony and it seems 70% of gamers despite your views love their games and consider them among the best). Im just saying again that if you quit gaming because of any one developer first party or third leaving the industry.....your again...not much of a gamer and a hell of a fanboy.

Sony continues to keep me informed, giving me lots of stuff, giving me lots of demos, etc. and has gotten me involved in gaming more (like with the G.A.P.). But, I said what I did because I've never gotten the same satisfaction out of my other platforms, even when I had some bias for them (there were times I was upset with Sony, and hated them, supporting other platforms, but was never as happy with them). Oh, I think it's stupid too to molest a PS3. But the implication that a guy would never want something having touched another guy discounts anyone who would honestly not give a flip or doesn't mind that it's been touched by a guy.

I'm sure that there are some people who might even prefer it, but nevertheless it's a rather dumb sales tactic, considering all of the people out there that it turns off.

I dunno - looks like a regular old plain looking person to me. The evidence for the drug use, however, lies in the $9500 bid combined with the ZERO feedback the seller has. Oh yeah, right, someone's gonna drop that much on YOUR auction!

And the auction with the unrelated underwear pic - SOLD FOR $810 + $69 shipping and it is for TWO 20GB PS3's (as far as I can tell - they aren't clear about that but one receipt is for a 20GB). So, it didn't much work ;).

I like the badly photochopped PS3's in front of the porn pic - those must be the new PS3 Micro's (or the model is HUGE, but well-proportioned).

And the PS3's on top of the Mercedes - yeah, another genius marketer there. I'm guessing he made his money some other way.

 God I love how these people have lost their dignity twice over. Once for posting their stupid ass picture with the system and once for buying 6-10 consoles with the hopes of retiring off the income.

Assuming this isn't some kind of joke (getting harder to tell) where on earth do people even come up with the idea that a video game system is their ticket out of debt? I mean, I can sort of see people thinking they could make a few hundred or even (if they're gullible) a few thousand, but $1,000,000? How much does it cost to add a Buy It Now of $1,000,000 anyway? I thought they varied the charge depending on the amount.

Because they saw the initial results and thought they could cash in. Duh.

Karma: it's a beautiful thing.

Probably not original..

but these people have been PLAYSTATIOWN3D. ^_^

Nice $600 paperweights, assholes.

Halo playing BBW? As much as I love boobs, thats a whole lot of chin for a girl to be selling me something.

Well, yeah, the accusation is primarily on the bolded part, i.e. the "starting bid" price. Lady, news flash: what might have worked five minutes after launch ain't flyin' here a month later. Nevertheless, the woman does have a very 'weathered' look to her, which tends to support the accusation.

P.S. I think the Xbox S-controller chick is a bit on the hefty side. Her gut extends out past her boobies. At least the photographer 'played to her strengths'!

Wow, a member since 2000 and feedback rating of 16 plus a picture of a PS3 on a scale!

"First of all, I've been a member since 2000. That should definitely increase your trust in me."
"Second of all, I have 16 positive feedback."
"I've also taken a picture of the box on a scale, so you can see how much it weighs."

Green Trash bags, Must be the latest fashion in hooker wear.

Seeing 10 PS3s in one pick bafels me, do these idiots still think PS3s go for thousands of dollars? Someone tell these morons it's over.

Wow, people are still trying to dump them despite the much higher apparent availability in stores (not that I've seen one beyond the $1189 Fry's bundle that doesn't seem to be selling all that well):

I see over 40,000 PS3's up for auction currently (and it is early on the 23rd - too late for any Christmas deliveries).

Here are some recently hosed sellers:

60 GB for $600, with free shipping (d'oh, why didn't he just return it if he was going to start his auction at $600?):
http://cgi.ebay.com/Sony-PlayStatio...5QQihZ010QQcategoryZ62054QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

20 GB for $500, $27 shipping:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Sony-PlayStatio...0QQihZ019QQcategoryZ62054QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Canadian hoser getting hosed (60GB for $570):
http://cgi.ebay.com/Sony-PlayStatio...4QQihZ006QQcategoryZ62054QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Hosed 2-day camper (20GB for $423 + unspecified shipping, double d'oh!):
http://cgi.ebay.com/Sony-PlayStatio...5QQihZ001QQcategoryZ62054QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

To be fair, it seems a few people are still able to get (somewhat) lucky:

$1200 for 60GB with 2 games + extra controller, free for LOCAL PICKUP (be careful dude):
http://cgi.ebay.com/Sony-PlayStatio...4QQihZ004QQcategoryZ62054QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

$866 with free overnight shipping:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Sony-PlayStatio...QQihZ008QQcategoryZ147177QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

A WTF? auction, $1000 for a 20GB with NO extras from a brand new zero-feedback seller:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Sony-PlayStatio...7QQihZ020QQcategoryZ62054QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

And another much like that one, something wierd is going on:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Sony-PlayStatio...3QQihZ017QQcategoryZ62054QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Oh wait, and here's one where the buyer didn't read the fine print. Take this as a lesson in eBay newbieness - see if you can spot the flaw. It will be interesting to see if this goes through in the end:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Sony-Playstatio...5QQihZ017QQcategoryZ62054QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

But MANY more auctions go completely unsold at anywhere from $500 on up (which makes anyone who bids one up to $1000 and is serious a complete idiot). There are 3 or 4 unsold (ie, no bids at all or reserve not met) for every one sold.

Sorry, no goofball people pictures - I've only seen one with a person in it over 4-5 pages of completed listings. It seems that particular "virus" has run its course.

Wait, here's one with a picture, and a funny little story to go along with it.
Went unsold with an unknown reserve and a BIN of $575:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Sony-PlayStatio...2QQihZ009QQcategoryZ62054QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

We all know what a Playstation 3 is. I am not goin into detail with its specs and so forth. But, I will tell you I bought it from Best Buy here in Houston. They were bought by mistake, idiots I have working for me bought 20gb's. So my lost is your gain. They do have reciepts. I will hand deliver up to 5 hours of Houston to your closest Wal-mart for $200.

This seller has a better picture in his (or hers), of all things, $5-$25 PCMCIA card auction:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...Sell_LogicX&refwidgettype=cross_promot_widget

(Sorry, can't figure out how to get the pics directly in here)

By the way, I was looking at the full text of the Seller's instructions from eBay for selling PS3's and Wii's and this explains at least one odd thing. For some reason, if you have multiple consoles to sell, you are REQUIRED to show them all in the same picture. I guess they mean to thwart people who are selling the same exact system multiple times . Though there would be so many ways around that I don't see the point. Also, I'm sure they've stopped checking for these restrictions (and cancelling auctions as a result of violations) ever since the first week of PS3 sales.
