OFFICIAL 2006 Yard Sale Thread
Yes place is very close, as I will be driving by there within a half hour, and There is only Final Fantasy VII left as I'd bougt the others and it's $6.99 for the greatest hits. I'll go pick it up, and if it doesn't work with you, than I'm sure I can find someone somewhere.

Edit: If it's still there that is.
OOOOOOO I thought you were saying that there were 7 other games you left behind. Was hoping that meant you had left FFVII, and some others like Brave Fencer Musashi or Threads of Fate behind.

No no no, if I had the money, I'd have picked up any rpg that I don't have, even though I just sold a lot of rpgs off just recently. In any case, I have Final Fantasy VII now, if you are interested, just say "eh" and if not, someone else can have it for $10 shipped.

On another note, I had dropped off several strategy guides and old magazines, nothing of interest really besides maybe Battalion wars but they were all penny guides. ANYWAY, when I went there to pick up FFVII, I checked on the section where they put the guides and only 3 of them made it there; out of maybe 40, only 3. I'm thinking that there's someone in the back snagging all the deals.

Hell ya I want it. Ill send ya a PM with info.

Picked up the following jerseys at my goodwill:

- Jeremiah Trotter #54 (Limited Edition 70th Anniversary Washington Redskins)- $4.99

- Steve McNair #9 (Titans) - $4.29

Well, I certainly had a good haul at Savers today, all Sega CD games for $5.99 each:
Lunar: Silver Star
Lunar 2: Eternal Blue
Popful Mail
Snatcher (I already have this game, but I decided to pick up a second copy to sell on eBay)
I also got a N64 Transfer Pak for 2 bucks, after a 50% off discount. Quite a good deal, since N64 accessories, with the exception of controllers and rumble paks, are pretty hard to come by in my area.

I then went to a nearby Goodwill, where I bought a boxed Sidewinder USB gamepad for $2.80, after the 10% college student discount.

Interesting things I saw, but didn't buy:
Savers: Rise of the Dragon (Sega CD) (Thinking of going back to get this one), a Sega Saturn w/ cords and a controller - 17.99 (Would get this, but the price is too steep for me); 4 Playstations - 9.99-12.99; a Genesis 2 - Can't remember the price.

Hit 20 sales, made 5 purchases. It seemed like every other sale we went to had videogames. Tons of stories today.

A few weeks ago we were hypothesizing that we had some new competition in one of our favorite towns, and today we met him. ...and today, he sold us the Turbo-Grafx stuff. So we pull up to this sale, and while walking up the drive way we spot a guy pulling the TG16 games out of a large box. Let me tell you that there's no worse feeling than being at a yard sale, watching somebody else rummage through a box full of gold. He was looking through a big box that was filled with NES stuff, NES carts, and the TG16 stuff that we later got. He was probably in his late 30's, wearing sunglasses and sporting a goatee. We instantly and correctly pegged him as a flea market dealer. At first the people holding the sale were asking $10 for the entire box (UGH!), but after checking with their son, it was upped to $15. While that whole exchange was going on, I asked the guy if he was planning on buying it all. He said "I'm not sure, but I'll let you know in a few minutes." So he ends up buying the whole box for $15, and I say "Thanks anyway, have a good day." So then he says "Well hold on, if you want the Turbo stuff for $10 you can have it, as it's useless to me. I'm only interested in the Nintendo stuff." We have a little back-and-forth about flea markets and what not, and we eventually settle on $7 for all the Turbo stuff. We were absolutely SHOCKED that he didn't want the Turbo stuff, especially since he was out to make money. Still, it was nice of him to sell them to us 5 seconds after buying them. Never had anything close to that happening before. But yeah, now we know who our competition in that town is...

No real story on the Master System. I completely missed it on the first pass, but it was pointed out after I asked. CIF'd $2, settled on $3. Everything in surprisingly good shape.

Got the 32X/3DO stuff from a sale advertising "anime, manga, and videogames". Everything was actually pretty fairly priced too. For everything we got, he was originally asking $20, and we talked him down to $8. Youngish kid, used to be the manager of a Gamestop, pretty nice. We left behind a Gamegear marked $2, a SNES marked $4, and some videogame soundtracks marked a buck each. The reason we left stuff behind? We ran out of money.

The sale that we got the $3 NES game bundle was being held by a guy who was polishing his handgun. Talk about an effective haggling deterent! We asked about games and his son brought us inside. He had TOTES UPON TOTES of games, NES SNES GEN Atari, tons and tons of games. I pick out the NES, SNES, and GEN totes and offer him $10 (all I had left at this point) for them. He declines, and also says that he can't sell all of them because some belong to his sister. So I pick out everything that I eventually buy, plus Bubble Bobble and Yo Noid! He takes out the last two (his sister's), and takes my $3 offer for the rest. As the weeks go on, we seem to cherrypick more and more.

The first sale we went to today advertised videogames, and when we got there we found a stack of PS2 games marked $10 each, and a bunch of N64 games marked $5 each. We decided to come back later in the day and try for 50 cents a pop. Luckily the sale was a few streets away from where I live, so we just stopped back there again before heading home. She had already gotten a good look at me earlier this morning, so I waited on the corner, out of sight, while moiety drove up and offered. Of course, she flatly refused, telling her that "These retail for $50!" And surprsingly enough, most of the games were gone when she went back. I guess that stuff sells even at Gamestop prices. I always wanted to do the "wait at the corner", it was kind of funny.

We called it a day at 11, about 1.5 hours earlier than usual. The yardsale game is a strange one, our last few weeks have been pretty barren, and then an explosion of stuff today. It just goes to show that you can't take one weekend and assume that every weekend will be like it. It's always a completely different experience, and you just have to stick to it even during the dry weeks.

Hit up 17 yardsales today in 2.5 hours and drove a total of 19 miles

the yardsale gods must of been looking out for me. I passed on an intellivision system last week it was a super nice clean sytem and I was going to go as high as $25 on it but the guy would not bite. anyway I found another gem of a intelevision system w/ 7 boxed complete games - yes all overlays were included. The lady had a label on it marked $3 with 7 games, it was originally marked $5 but scratched out and replaced with $3 . I saw it and simply walked up to her and CIF $1 which she took without hesitation

Picked up 19 Garfield comic strip books #1-18 and # 22 and six big Calvin and hobbs comic strip books. This person wanted 1.00 each on the C&H and .25 on the Garfields but said if I took a bunch of books she could do better. so i rounded them up and CIF $4 which she took

SNES games and NES game cart only
super mario worls x2
T2
Power rangers
Super Ghouls and ghosts
SMB 3

These games were all marked .50 each I tried to CIF $1 but the kid selling them was like no way. Then I upped it $2 which he shot down, So I ultimately paid the 43

Stephen King IT 2nd printing HC - .25

CD's

11 different Queen CD's and 3 Willie Nelson CD's all mint.
Total $14. tried to CIF $10 but again rejected and payed the full $1 asking price for each one

BTW nice score today evilmax
very true
2 parts luck 2 parts persistence eh? Anyways, good finds all! I hit 3 yard sales today only since I was on foot and not in the mood for walking(trying to finish up Mario and Luigi SSS by day day end)and found squat. Hit 2 yesterday and all I found was 2 Xbox sport titles which the lady wanted $8 for since "They cost her $50 in store".

Sweet, you should start posting pictures.

Found a crusty old NES today, Two controllers, all hookups and SMB/DH:roll:
Wanted 5, CIF 3 and got it.

Found a PSOne (Been looking for one, so the high price I paid is worth it I guess).
Asking price was 25, I CIF 8 and got it.
PSONE, immaculate, 3 dualshock controllers, all hookups.

Genesisi 3 + Hookups...
I saw it and was surprised, since I'd heard of the Genesis 3, but had never seen it. I had no idea it was so small! Anyway, here's an interesting story...
So I start off by looking around, uninterested in the Gen 3 and tons of weird NES controllers they had (They had wired ones, wireless ones, dogbones, one handed ones, joysticks, multitaps (Four Score AND Sattelite) all for the NES! But no systems or games)
Anyway, I pick up the Genesis, no cables or controllers, and offer five dollars for it. Pretty generous I was suspecting. The guy shoots me back with "NO! Thirty Dollars!"
"But it's dirty!"
"30 dollars!"
"But it has no controllers or connections or anything! How do I even know it works?"
"It works. And besides - the controllers are there *points to NES Controllers*"

Me: Alright then... *Picks up five NES Controllers, a four score, four wireless controllers, and three joysticks*
"100 dollars"
"WHAAT?!?!"
I put the stuff back on the ground, gave the guy a sarcastic smile and got the hell out of there.

Ironically, about a few minutes after I had left there, my dad went there, and called me up telling me they had NES controllers. I asked him if the Genesis 3 was there, and he looked around and found it.
My dad was haggling with him, asking him if he had controllers or connections, and generally acting as uninterested as possible.
The guy apparantly, got on all fours, searched the ground, found the hook ups, found the controllers, and was desperately trying to sell it to my dad.

Price in the end?
...

...

Ten dollars.

Why is that?! I'm guessing he saw a sixteen year old and tried to take advantage.

I recently scored a Genesis 3 last week. It cost me a lot more than I wanted to spend but it came in the box and is immaculate, I had never held one previous to buying this one and sure enough it's tiny (especially compared to model 1 and 2). Heh.

Looks have alot to do with everything in life. It could have been because he thought he could take advantage of you for how young you are, or maybe a kid had tried to steal something earlier in the day or his own kid had pissed him off. Guy could hate whatever color you are or maybe you were wearing a sports shirt and the guy hated the team. Honestly, you just have to pay attention and feel this kinda stuff out. Iv got a mohawk and tattoos on my hands, so im used to getting some reactions and generally can feel people out pretty well ;)

Regardless, sounds like you handled the situation well. Next time id try the same thing but make sure to check back later in the day(this time you didnt have to thankfully).

2006 has been horrible for garage sales for me: UNTIL TODAY!

PS2(all mint complete):

Marvel vs Capcom 2
Time Crisis 3 w/gun
Phantom Brave
Guilty Gear X2

PS1:

DDR
DDR Konamix
DDR Extra Mix
Legend of Legaia
FF VII Demo Disc

Total Paid: $35

Also found an NES with 15 games for $10, and on a non gaming note, I got a Korg M1 Studio Synthesizer in beautiful condition for $50 (go for around $300 on ebay!)

Wish they were all like this!

Did okay today...

Gameboy = $2 (I needed the battery cover even if it didn't work...lol).

Gameboy Color (with batteries) + Mickey Mouse game = $2

Gameboy (missing battery cover) = $.50
( I guess today was GameBoy day...lol)

All from one sale...
PC game Zoo Tycoon (for my wife) = $1
PC game Aliens vs Predator 2 = $1
MP3 player AM/FM radio with PC software = $10
Batman DVD (for the boys) = $2
Threw in for free...
GameBoy game Joust/Defender 2 in 1 complete in the box (was priced $.50)
Package of GameBoy game cases (to hold carts) (was priced $.25)

Last sale I hit...
NES with 8 controllers, 2 NES satellites (wireless 4 player devices), 27 games = $15 (NES was messed up with flashing light, but good for parts...rest is great for local trade in).
Sega Game Gear with Sonic Chaos game = $3

****
edit...
Oh, forgot to mention the one "on crack" sale I went to. Kid had a lot of gaming stuff out and I was the first one there...thought I had hit the first sale of the day jackpot. Unfortuantely, he was asking a lot more than what I was willing to pay for the stuff...
N64 with 2 controllers and carrying bag = $30
PS1 (grey) with 2 controller = $25
XBOX with 2 controllers = $100
Games for various systems in a box lid (anywhere from just carts to complete with instructions) $3 a game (for cr@p) to $10 and $15 per game (for ones you could buy at GS/EB cheaper).
I kinda felt sorry for the kid as he could have done a LOT better if he had grouped up the systems with the games and came up with a fair price for entire lots instead of asking so much for each game.

Another disappointing weekend. Only one sale advertised video games. When i got there it was all xbox stuff that i had no use for or was not interested in. Turned out the guy worked for xbox (thats the beauty of living in Microsoft Headquarters aka Redmond) and was trying to sell off old beta discs for xbox live, nfl fever, etc. Did get 2 good quality ddr pads for my sisters b-day at 10$ each. Last sale of the day was about to leave when i saw a bike tipped over on a bush. I picked it up and saw the tag that said "All bikes $5". Didnt even bother trying to haggle becasue $5 was a great price especially for this mongoose 3 gear mtn bike with a seat that looked almost brand new and could have easily been $20+. Happy about the bike but thats bout it for this week.

My annual garage sale has been a near bust this year so far. I've had mostly "sniffers" this year. What's scary is that its not my prices but the fact that most of the people in my area are very unappriciative of the good deals I got going on. I'm wishing now I would of advertised this a bit on CAG but I was a bit afraid that CAG would of picked my sale apart clean within the first 3 hours tops. ;)

Oh, and "sniffers" is a term I coined for a person who walks in a garage sale, spins around, then leaves without really even looking. And a lot of the time they tend to be pretty much an asshole when you try to even say hi to them.

Oh my, EXTRA MIX?! You have a modded PSOne?

I'd love to buy it from you, tell me I can buy it from you? I've been trying to get back legitimate copies of my import DDR's and Extra Mix is one of the few I need

I don't know if I should make an offer, but give me a price and if it's good I'll pay it.

GC Wario Ware Inc (complete) & PS2 Blue Dual Shock 2, $10

total, $29.25. not a bad morning altogether. my pal also picked up Jak II for PS2 for just $3. the PSP games are kinda cool, considering i looked out the window of the car at the yard sale, and said, "nah, these guys look weird." my instincts got the better of me and we went back, and was pleasantly surprised that they were asking "2 for a dollar" for the 4 PSP titles.

i think the Skipping Christmas books are my favorite find of the day. interestingly enough, i found the paperback and hardcover at two different sales, across town from one another. now i have a nice one to read at home, and one to just throw in my pocket. good times.
allyourblood - I picked up dynamite headdy a couple of weeks ago and it has replaced decap attack as my new favorite Nomad bathroom game. It think this is one of those games that is low on gamers radars but it really should'nt be. Nice, enjoyable game - give it a shot
i've actually owned this game about 2-3 times, and sold the last few copies i had. i'm no stranger to it -- DH used to be one of my favorite Gen games back in the day. i'll still play it again though, i always come back to the classics. ;)

and sorry for just noticing this old post now.
Well hell, I wish you would have advertised on here!
I'm going to be redoing the sale at some point in September. This time I am going to advertise on CAG along with the Star Tribune so that will bring more people out. I will give a heads up that my Dreamcast along with 12 games, the Shenmue strategy guide, and 1 controller is right now going for $90. I'm going to be added my Gamecube in on the September go around.

I'll post more when its closer to the next time.

All I got today was Krusty's Super Fun House (complete) for the PC for $.50 and Galactic Wrestling (complete, amnual is chewed up in the bottom right-hand corner) for the PS2 for $4.

Picked up Starlancer for the PC for $0.99 and Dreamcast Generator for $1.98 at a local thrift store. Haven't tried Starlancer yet, is it better than the dreamcast version?

Last Sunday I went to a function out of town and noticed a few YS signs for Sunday only sales. It prompted it me to go out this morning and take a quick drive around my general area and see if I could find anything.

I hit 2 sales in about 30 minutes and drove 8 miles total.
Both had video games.

First sale had a Intellevision system w/26 games cart only. The lady brought this out after I asked. Everything was filthy I could'nt even turn the power switch off there was so much crud. Anyway the lady wanted $10 . I retalliated w/ a CIF $5. Simultaneously her BF or husband came over and was like $5? Those games go for a small mint on ebay. I did'nt want to get in to it so I bolted. I'm really a little surprised cause I have not seen any Intellevisions in any of my previous outings and all of sudden 3 in 2 weeks.

Second sale I scored this which kinda of had me doing the happy happy joy joy dance when I left the sale. All games are complete w/ amazingly clean (aside from some fingerprints) discs

Sega Saturn games - complete - these games were especially nice because all the hinges on the cases were intact which is not typical of most saturn game cases cause they usually break easily

Contra - Legacy of War
X-men - Children of the Atom
Doom
Virtual fighter 2
Wrestlemania
Pinball
World series Baseball
Die Hard Trilogy
Command and Conquer
Battlestations

PS2 games - complete
Ace Combat 4 - GH
Star Wars Bounty Hunter

XBox games - complete
Max Payne
NFSU 2
Tony Hawk 2

Total $17

Went to this sale and asked for games, and a young girl maybe 14 or 15 was a little hesitant and at first said no. Then a younger boy maybe 10 said what about the saturn games? then she said oh yeah let me go get them. I quickly asked if she wanted to sell the system and she said no that there are games she is keeping to play on it. Anyway she comes out with the 10 saturn games , I check everything out ( I have a $10 maximum figure in my head ) So I ask how much and she comes back with $20 to which I automatically whip out the $10 and CIF her and she comes back with to my surprise with how bout $15. i shake my head in a negative way and say I can only go $10. So she took it. The the young kid is like I got some ps2 and xbow games and jolts inside to get them comes back out with a short stack and I spot the BH and AC4 which he tells me $2 each I picked out 3 xbox games and the BH and AC4 and CIF him $7 which he took.

I don't have much luck around here at sales. The normal video game items are used PS2 sports games for $10-$20 and Super NES carts w/o the plastic protectors for $15. I asked they said they see them going for more than that on ebay so these are like a steal.

I did run across this, this week for a dollar. Seems interesting and it worked, he even tossed in the 9-Volt battery for it.

One of the games I noticed had a copyright of 1979
Nice find Snotknocker!

I'm jealous of that copy of X-Men: Children of the Atom you found :)
Thanks. I've actually been playing it for the last couple of hours. I'm getting flashbacks of drug induced gaming frenzies from when I played this at the arcade back in the day. I can not even begin to think of how many quarters I slammed into that machine. Good times.

I only had one find saturday. I was at a garage (moving) sale and only saw 3 gamecube games, I asked for the price; $10 each. So it looked like a no-go. As I was walking away, the guy there said he had some master system stuff and asked if I was interested, I said yes obviously. He finally found a container holding the sms stuff. Here's what I got:

Sega Master System with the cables a controller and system instructions

Light Phaser (gun) with instructions

3-D glasses w/ adapter (very cool)

27 games:
Spy vs. Spy
Y's the vanished omens
Miracle warriors
R-type
Double dragon
Space Harrier
Kenseiden
Dead angle
golvellius
Shinobi
Choplifter
Outrun
Golden Axe Warrior
Alien Syndrome
Ghostbusters
Where in the world is carmen sandiego
Kung fu kid
After burner
Great baseball
Rescue Mission
Blade eagle 3-D
Hang on + safari hunt
Rambo III
Rocky
The ninja
Monopoly
Vigilante

Just about everything is in great condition, and only a couple of games aren't complete. Everything works great.

He wanted $50. The lowest I could get him down to is $45.

P.S. I would have gotten a picture up but I can't find the cord that connects the camera to my computer.

If you found the 3D goggles (hopefully they work) then you got quite a steal. I hope you find Space Harrier 3D someday.

I also have good memories of X-Men: Children of the Atom. I remember trying to do the code to play as Akuma on two occassions and failing both times. I then proceeded to embarrass myself with my lack of knowledge using Spiral and Silver Samurai. I wasn't able to actually get the code to work until I played the game in emulation and even then it took me about 25 tries to finally get it right.

Good game though. I just wish Magneto wasn't the hardest fighting game boss ever.

$20 for the 5 3DO games (Can't see the one to the very left, the games are: Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Off Road Interceptor, Quarantine, Quarterback Attack and Syndicate)

$.50 for the Nintendo Players VHS

$2 for Descent 2

$5 for the Master System (Has 2 controllers and a random game in the bag.)

The Playgear Pocket case was free.

Wow, sure are a lot of us finding master system stuff lately. I found one back maybe a year ago, but haven't seen much since. toldawg128 got a very nice find, even though I wouldn't have wanted to spend that much. I've heard those 3D glasses are pretty cool.
Picked up Starlancer for the PC for $0.99 and Dreamcast Generator for $1.98 at a local thrift store. Haven't tried Starlancer yet, is it better than the dreamcast version?
I own the PC and DC versions.

I honestly don't know if one is that much better than the other. I like the controls of the DC just beacause they are simpler, but Starlancer looks better on a PC screen.

I have a chance to grab one at that price but when I check ebay its all buy it nows for $65 with no real auctions(cept 2 that arnt ending for another 9 days). Well I want it, but im not dying for one. This is mainly buying it to add to my collection(want to eventually own every system and im making good progress with handhelds). So im trying to find out if $20 is a really good deal, or its just ok and they are usually a $30 system.

Here is a transcript from a deal I am trying to work out with a guy on Craigslist. He is selling a complete NES with Dr. Mario, Paperboy, Back to the Future, Dream Master, Tiny Toon Adventures, DinoRiki, and Destiny of an Emperor, Mario 3 and Super Mario/Duck Hunt.

I just wanted to say that I am interested in your NES and games. But
there are a few things I must ask you:

Me:
Does everything work?
Is anything discolored or torn?
Is everything complete?
Do the games have their boxes and manuals?
Does the system have its box and manual?
Are the games authentic copies? Not pirated?

This guy:
Yes everything works. Nothins torn or discolored. No box or manuals. I
played it today

Me:
Would you take $6 for everything? I am negotiable, so please e-mail me soon.

This guy:
$6? fuck that

What exactly are you supposed to do to have a person on Craigslist sell you a good deal? What am I missing?

By the way, I am still talking to him. It turns out that he was thinking of $60 for everything. This may be difficult, but damn it, I want copies of Little Nemo and Desiny of an Emperor.

That's probably about 90% of my CL correspondences. You just gotta keep watching for stuff you're interested in and sending out the emails. The people who'll actually take the "lowball" offers are very rare.

Thanks for the advice, but this Craigslist game will truly be a stretch on my patience; I hardly see any games or systems in my area that are resonably priced. But I will keep trying.

Ya looking around craigslist some areas are absoultly flooded with offers getting 100+ a day while others even in a big area like Toledo only see 3 offers a day making them not worth checking.

Make sure you look a little outside your area though. Maybe the place near you has no deals at all and no one is posting....but an area 45-60 mins away is flooded. You may think to yourself im not driving an hour for a deal....but when you score several PSX or SNES RPGs or an XYe for $10 it makes that drive worth it.

It turns out that this seller I am talking to is pulling that "it sells for X amount on eBay" crap. Does anybody have a good idea on how to counter this? I know I have heard some before but I have forgotten them.

I also suggest that whatever solution there is for countering such remarks be added to the tips list on the Wiki page.

There really isn't a counter that will get you the games. The most p opular response is "Well, then sell it on ebay." and walking away from the deal.

It's a lot harder to get good deals on Craigslist because you have absolutely no leverage. You can haggle at yard sales because a) a lot of people don't do well in face-to-face social situations, and will often just take your offer to avoid conflict...and b) they don't want to bring it back inside at the end of the day. With Craigslist, you're only text in an email client. It's much easier for the person to say no and delete your email, because you're not right there with him.

Your situation is not uncommon at all. This sounds like one of those things that just wasn't meant to be.

One CL tip is that you'll get a bit more leverage if you call them (only do so if they list a number). It's more akward than email, but that can work in your favor.

Tell him ebay takes almost a dollar for listing an item, then it takes several percent of your item sales and then paypal takes its cut. By the end if you sell something for $55 you end up making $49. Then point out that things dont always sell on ebay for estimated value, sometimes you put something up and it usually goes for $50 but in the end yours ends at $40 and after fees you make $35. Finaly, point out the hassle of even bothering with ebay.

Really thats all you can do. If he still responds that way honestly tell him these exact words. "Go fuck yourself and next time you want ebay values dont list it on craigslist jackass".

$6 dollars???....at the very least you could have offered $10...it just sounds better

Most of the stuff I've seen on Craig's List is over priced. There is the occasional deal but they are few and far between...not to mention usually grabbed up faster than you can send an email...lol.

Seriously thou, the whole "it's worth 'X' on ebay" thing is similar to what I encountered during my comic book collecting days once price guides were out. Many people look at JUST the price and nothing else. The have no concept that condition, availability in a particular location (how easy/hard to find), etc. can affect the price. And, in most cases, explaining this to them does no good.

Once they have found a price, they see what they want to see (the "value" of an item) and often become insulted/frustrated with anyone (with more knowledge about the stuff) trying to explain the difference between that price and an item's actual value. They usually feel as if someone is just trying to trick them out of their valuable items.

At least with ebay, there is the fact that fees are associated with the listings (which can sometimes help your side of the discussion). Rather than just coming straight out and saying "well ebay has fees", the best way to approach this is sort of thing is from their perspective/benefit. Say something along the lines of "yeah, I've sold a couple of things on ebay, but the fees (and packing costs/etc.) associated with selling the stuff meant I actually got a good bit less than what the items sold for." This way, you have been able to point out the "value" associated with the items on ebay isn't necessarily what is shown without making the person feel ignorant (which a lot of people don't like).

While it may work to use strong arm tactics with some people, others immediately back off. By putting yourself on their side (via similarities of experiences, not just "educating" them), you might have a better chance of striking a deal.
